A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear members of the Mount Carmel College community,
What a wonderful success our annual fair was on Friday evening! Although it
threatened to rain and there was a slight drizzle at times, we were able to
continue with a number of activities outside and made the most of our Hall
and Art room for the main events. In total, we raised $15, 457 which is a
fantastic result and will be used to directly finance projects and initiatives to
support our students’ learning. Equally significant was the opportunity to
come together as a community and celebrate our sense of belonging. Thank
you most sincerely to all who helped in any way: with donations of goods,
assistance on a stall or your presence as a patron. A massive thanks goes to
Jodi Willcox, for her overall coordination of the event. It was a huge job and
Jodi’s energy and passion ensured that all went smoothly.
Speaking of energy and passion, the Autumn Concert held on Monday evening
at Mount Carmel was again a celebration of vitality and talent. The enthusiasm
and skill of our students, encouraged and facilitated by the direction of Head
of the Arts, Mr Dave McNamara, was showcased in the concert. The House
sing-off was a highlight with the adjudicator deciding, on this occasion, that
the winning performance came from Loreto with their rendition of ‘Umbrella’.
Congratulations to all involved and thank you to those families who came
along to enjoy the evening.
Year 8 students and staff have headed off this week for a 2 night camp at Maria
Island. Such an opportunity has many benefits including the development of
social skills and independence, team building and leadership skills, and the
encouragement of physical fitness and an active lifestyle. The students will be
challenged in many ways and this will help foster resilience and perseverance.
Such opportunities would not be possible without the willingness of staff to
take on this extra responsibility. As well as the careful planning of the itinerary,
they are there to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every student. In this
setting, staff and students will get to know one another very well and their
bonds will be strengthened. A huge thank you to the staff who volunteered to
participate in this experiential learning opportunity, and a special thanks to
Head of Health and Physical Education, Mr Phil Hyatt, for his overall
coordination of the experience.

CHANGE TO WINTER UNIFORM
A reminder to all students that we make the change to winter uniform in Term 2. From the 20th April all students must wear
their full winter uniform.
The Clothing Shop is open on Monday from 1pm – 4pm, Wednesday from 12pm – 4pm and Friday from 12pm – 2pm.
For you convenience the Clothing Shop will be also be open on Friday, 17th April from 10am – 3pm.

The week before last I had the opportunity to attend the Ceremony of
Commendation for Guilford Young College. It was a beautiful and very proud
occasion for me, as a large number of recently graduated Mount Carmel
College students were presented with awards. It is always lovely to have our
‘old girls’ visit and keep in touch, and we remain proud of their achievements
long after they have moved on from our College. The following achievements

Interim Reports
As you are no doubt aware, parents of students who are in Year 7, 8, 9 or 10 will receive Interim Reports handed to them at
the Parent-Teacher interviews taking place at the College on Monday, 30th March. Many parents have already booked their
interviews via the PTOnline site.
We would ask that parents arrive 5 to 10 minutes prior to their scheduled interviews so that they can collect and read the
interim reports and have a few minutes to digest the content of these reports prior to meeting with the homeroom teachers.

FROM THE HEAD OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - PRIMARY
Cristian’s community in rural Peru has always lived a traditional life, with simple diets and crops dependent on rainfall.
Until recently, 33-year-old Cristian had to travel one kilometre to access running water.
With the help of Caritas Huacho, Cristian and 14 other young farmers have introduced running water and irrigation to
their remote Andean village. They now grow and harvest a wide variety of high-value, sustainable crops, which provide
them all with a secure income and a wide variety of food.
This is the last week where families have the opportunity to make donations to Project Compassion. Your contributions
will help in creating a new life for Cristian, along with the rewarding experience of working closely with his neighbours,
‘giving each other a helping hand’.
Your donations create for others ‘food for life.’
A reminder that next week all project Compassion boxes need to be returned to the College office. We thank you for
donating so generously to this worthy cause during this time of Lent.
Mini Vinnies Induction Mass (St Vincent de Paul Society)
On Thursday, 19th March the Mini Vinnies leaders who are the primary student leaders and house captains were inducted
at a Mass presided by Archbishop Julian Porteous.
Mini Vinnies is a program designed for groups of primary school students who are interested in social justice. These
students will meet regularly to discuss ways in which they can help those in need within the school, local and the wider
community.
We congratulate these students and look forward to hearing about some of the great projects they will be involved in
throughout 2015.

Infant Palm Sunday re-enactment
On Friday, 27th March at 10am in the college hall students from Kinder to Grade 2 will be re-enacting the story of Jesus’
triumphant entry into Jerusalem with the crowds cheering and waving palms. Earlier this week, a letter was sent home
informing parents of costuming requirements.
Parents/carers are most welcome to attend this re-enactment.
Palm Sunday Pilgrimage
Catholic Youth Ministry is once again coordinating the Archdiocesan Palm Sunday Pilgrimage, which will take place on
Sunday, 29th March. Mount Carmel College in conjunction with other Catholic schools has been invited to participate in
the events that have been organised. The day will commence with a walk from the Church of the Incarnation Lindisfarne,
to St David’s Park where students will then have an opportunity to take part in some of the festivities. At 2pm there will
be the blessing of palms and there will be a street procession through Hobart to St Mary’s Cathedral for the celebration of
Palm Sunday Mass which will begin at approximately 3.15pm. If any student is interested in participating in this event
could they please see Mr Chapman or Miss Saracino by the end of Friday.
Stations of the Cross Grades 3-6 Re-enactment
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week. This is a significant time in the Liturgical year and we are called to walk
with Jesus on his journey to Calvary not as spectators but as companions. We are invited to ponder the readings, rather
than just listen to them, to share Jesus’ cross rather than watch from a safe distance, to share his struggle and pain rather
than just feel sorry for him.
On Wednesday 1st April in the College Hall at 10am students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 will be re-enacting Jesus story
from the Last Supper to his death on the cross. Parents are most welcome to attend.
The retelling of Jesus’ story of his last days through mime, reading scripture and prayers will enable students to identify
with him and interpret their own experiences and those of others.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Susan McLean - Cyber Safety Solutions
Susan McLean has appeared on a range of national television shows including
‘Insight’, Four Corners, Sunrise, State Focus and Today Tonight and has spoken
on a variety of National Radio stations including 3AW and its affiliate stations
throughout Australia. She regularly provides expert comment in print and
online media. Susan has a special ability to connect with each audience.
Children from as young as 8 years of age, through to students in their final year
of school, together with adults from all walks of life have been thoroughly
engrossed by her vibrant and easy to understand presentations. She has a
lifetime of ‘real’ experiences to share with her audience, and it is this ability,
to draw on actual cases and examples, together with Susan’s exceptional
presentation skills that make her presentations so unique.
We are very excited about Susan presenting to our secondary students during
the day and then a parent session will be held at 7.00pm in our College Hall on
Wednesday, 22nd April. So save this date as it promises to be an informative,
engaging, relevant and interesting insight into the issues around cyber safety!
Interim Reports / Secondary Parent Teacher
Secondary Parent Teacher will be held this Monday, 30th March between
3:30pm and 8:00pm in the College Library and Drama Studio. A further
reminder that your daughter’s Interim report will be issued on the night and
that parents/carers need to make a booking through Parent Teacher Online
(PTO). All the details were in the letter that was posted home. If this
information has been misplaced please contact the College Office.
It is expected that every secondary student attends with their parent/carer for
the interview so that your daughter’s progress to date, can be reviewed and
academic/co-curricular goals can be considered and agreed upon. These
evenings are scheduled to provide opportunities for students to develop and
take responsibility for their own learning, and to recognise areas of strength
and weakness.
This week’s Headline Act is all of the
students who participated in the Autumn
Concert.
On Monday, 23rd March, a large and very
enthusiastic audience were treated to our
Autumn Concert. The evening featured
many highlights.
Our Grade 5 - Year 10 College Orchestra
opened the program with a stirring
rendition of Hallelujah / Ode To Joy and
then Ragtime Roundabout. The Secondary
Choir sang sweetly, displaying their
developing sound. Several instrumental
music students displayed their skills and
results of much quality practice and
excellent instrumental teaching. There
were outstanding performances of pieces
from the Musical Theatre unit being
studied this term by students from the
Year 9/10 Elective Music classes.
The third annual House Sing-Off was hotly
contested with all three Houses putting in
enthusiastic and entertaining items.
Loreto won the contest on the night with
their arrangement of ‘Umbrella’.
The concert was a wonderful celebration
of talent and an absolute joy to be present
to see the level of creativity, energy and
enthusiasm
of
our
students.

Winter Uniform
As there is no transition period this year, all students are to be in full winter
uniform on the first day of Term 2. It is, therefore, timely to remind parents and
students to give some attention to ensuring winter uniforms are ready over the
next few weeks. To assist parents with any final winter uniform requirements,
the College Uniform Shop will be open on Friday, 17th April between 10.00am –
3.00pm.
ROWING
Date: Saturday 28th March
The full details about the Winter Uniform are published in the College Planner,
however, students are now permitted to wear their navy cardigan with their
winter uniform instead of the brown jumper.
Time: 8am
A few key reminders: the white shirt should be worn with the buttons and tie
done up; the skirt should be worn at knee length; girls are required to wear the
College boater to and from school; and navy scarves and gloves are optional items
for extra warmth. The College vest can also be worn as an additional layer of
warmth while at school, on chilly days but should be worn over the cardigan and
not to and from the College. Please note that sunhats are optional in Term 2.
What to wear: Comfortable,
fitted clothing
Secondary students are permitted to wear their full College tracksuit in Term 2
and 3 when your daughter has two periods (minimum) of sport-related lesson eg:
double HPE lesson, Sports Science or SME.

MILO T20 - Blast Primary School Cup
The Southern Final of the T20 Blast Cup was held last Friday in blustery conditions in Lindisfarne. The 9 qualifying girls’
teams were placed into 3 groups, with the winner of each group going through to the State Final in September.
With 2 opponents in each group, we were fortunate to get the first bye and time to practice our bowling and fielding. the
girls were then ready to tackle Sacred Heart Geeveston in their first game. The girls played brilliantly, scoring lots of runs
in the double zone and with sharp fielding, all the run outs added extra points. Following a big win, the girls went into the
final match against reigning champions Corpus Christi with much more confidence.
Captain Grace brought her team in and rejigged the batting partnerships, fielding positions and bowling order for the big
clash. The game was thrilling, with plenty of 4s and 6s being scored by both teams. Catches were taken in the deep, there
was amazing bowling, and both teams fielded brilliantly. The game could have gone either way, but Corpus Christi were
announced the winners by just 22 runs.
Comments were made that our girls displayed fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship, and supported the good play by
both teams. Well done to Grace Pullen, Samantha Tuck, Sarah Wilson-Haffenden, Ella Gartlan, Olivia Farrell, Georgia
Lamprill, Renae Philpott and Josie Davenport for their achievement.

Tasmanian School Surfing Championships
On Monday, Meg Bortkiewicz was the sole Mount Carmel
College representative at the Tasmanian School Surfing
Competition. In big swell, the conditions were tough for all
competitors. Meg competed in the U16 Division 2 event,
and at just 13, did an amazing job to place 2nd. Well done
on your fantastic achievement Meg, and thank you to Meg’s
Mum Lee-Anne for taking Meg and supporting her on the
day.

Netball Holiday Clinic
The Southern Tasmanian Netball Association invites students from
Grade 3 to Grade 7 to participate in the Term 1 Netball Holiday Clinic.
This clinic will be conducted by experienced coaches who aim to
provide skill development, fitness, improved game knowledge,
general enjoyment of the game and match play.
When: Monday 13th, Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th April

UNDERSTANDING ADOLESCENCE TODAY

Two of Australia's leading adolescent authors and educators — Dannielle Miller and Maggie Dent —
have created an inspiring seminar that explores the dynamic, confusing time of adolescence in
today's modern context.
Maggie will explore the unique changes that occur during adolescence, which explain why
bedrooms go off, things get lost and communication can become a challenge. As a boy champion
she will cover the 'six packs' aspect of the evening.
Dannielle is recognised as a passionate girl champion and she will explore this time of transition
with information that will help you guide your adolescent girl towards adulthood with self-respect,
assertiveness and self-esteem.
This seminar is excellent for parents, educators, youth workers, allied health professionals,
doctors and anyone who gets to live with or work with adolescents.

Catholic Schools Parents Council and Guilford Young College. It is open to the public.

Dannielle Miller is an author, educator and media commentator. She is the co-founder and CEO of Australia's largest
provider of workshops aimed at empowering teen girls, Enlighten Education, and the founder of Goodfellas, a new
initiative supporting teen boys. Her books include The Butterfly Effect, The Girl with the Butterfly Tattoo and Loveability.
Maggie Dent is an author, educator, and parenting and resilience specialist. She has extensive experience as a
high-school teacher, and counsellor with young people and their families, in suicide prevention and palliative care. She
is the mother of four adult sons. She has written seven books including Saving Our Adolescents.
