Sleepover in school - Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School
R.C. High School A family of faith & learning NEWS - JANUARY 2014 Sleepover in school History was made just before the Christmas break when some of our students slept overnight in school! Around 60 Year 7 pupils gathered sponsorship money from family and friends in return for the priviledge of wearing their pyjamas and onesies and sleeping in the school hall. Year 7 form tutors Mrs Smith, Miss Bamber, Mr Low, Mrs Jones, Miss Sutcliffe and Miss Rushton along with Mr Nash, Mr Minns and Miss Murphy and Deputy Headteacher Mr Catlow attended this charity funraising event which was organised by Head of Year 7 Mrs Lowe. During the evening the pupils took part in team building challenges and quizzes including building a shelter from just newspaper, sticks, tape and bin bags. At supper time some of our PTA came along and served a hot chocolate drink and biscuits and the following morning our catering staff came in early to serve them breakfast. There were some very tired and bleary eyes around school the following morning (and that was just the staff!) but our pupils really enjoyed the evening and we are sure it is an experience they will never forget. The sleepover was the main fundraising event of the half term for the charity ‘Shelter’, with a total of £911 raised. Mrs Lowe said “This is a fantastic amount of money raised for this worthwhile charity. I am very proud of Year 7” www.mountcarmelhigh.lancs.sch.uk Community Christmas Party A Community Christmas Party took place at Mount Carmel in the afternoon of Monday 16th December. Over 60 guests attended from local parishes, family members of our school community, residential homes and local residents. They were treated to a hot festive meal cooked by Accrington & Rossendale College staff and catering students. Mount Carmel students served the food and waited on the tables ensuring our guests were happy and well catered for. An afternoon full of entertainment including music, song and dance all provided by Mount Carmel students and staff followed the meal. The Christmas carols and songs really got everyone in a festive mood. Hampers of food kindly donated by Mount Carmel students during a recent non-uniform day were given to each guest as they left. We were extremely grateful to the local businesses and school staff who donated many of the items used during the party such as table decorations, crackers, napkins, tablecloths and sherry. Thank you to all family, friends, helpers and carers who kindly transported many of our guests ensuring everyone arrived and returned home safely. view more Mount Carmel news at www.mountcarmelhigh.lancs.sch.uk Carol Concert Mount Carmel hosted a Hyndburn Schools Catholic Partnership Carol Concert in the school Hall. The service was a wonderful festive celebration delivered by the Catholic partnership of schools. Pupils from Mount Carmel, St. Anne’s & St. Joseph’s, St. Mary’s Clayton-le-Moors, St. Mary’s Oswaldtwistle, St. Oswald’s and Sacred Heart performed festive Carols, songs, readings and drama to a packed house. Mount Carmel PTA served refreshments and St. Mary’s College students entertained our visitors in the ‘Twelve Star Diner’ afterwards. Each family was given a candle to light on Christmas Day as they left the Concert. Market Hall festivities Accrington Library carols St. Anne’s & St. Joseph’s primary school choir sang Christmas songs and carols at Accrington Library to a large audience. The fifty strong choir sang beautifully and were led by Heateacher Miss Watson, supported by her staff. Four Mount Carmel pupils who are all ex-pupils of this primary school went along to serve mince pies, chocolate coins and drinks to the audience. The Market Hall in Accrington was the stage for the Hyndburn Catholic Schools Partnership choirs to sing to a large audience of Christmas shoppers. They entertained for over 2 hours singing carols and Christmas songs. The event culminated in a combined performance with over 150 pupils singing together on the staircase. facebook.com/MountCarmelHigh twitter.com/MountCarmelHigh Spelling Bee The Leading Edge Partnership of schools took part in their annual ‘Spelling Bee’ competition. Hosted at Norden, teams of Year 7’s from Mount Carmel, Hollins, Norden and Rhyddings High Schools battled for the title of ‘Spelling Bee’ champions for 2013. The ‘Last Man Standing’ round was the longest round in the history of the competition! The ‘Spelling Bee’ had almost exhausted his list of words and had to resort to selecting more from a dictionary! In a tense second round teams chose the level of difficulty of words and spelt as many as possible against a timer. The final results were extremely close with Rhyddings coming out as winners and Mount Carmel in a very close second place. The Mount Carmel team willingly came along to ‘working lunchtime’ practice sessions for almost 3 weeks to prepare for the competition. We were really proud of their commitment. Thank you to Miss McMellon for her dedication and time. Our school is currently full of munchkins, tin men, scarecrows and witches as rehearsals are franitcally underway for our major school production of the ‘Wizard of Oz’. Performances will take place on Weds 12th and Thurs 13th February in the evening. Please contact school if you wish to purchase a ticket.
