With this newsletter piece, I am always on the lookout for material to share
with our learning community. And, a couple

of weeks’ ago, I was invited into a gold mine of inspiration. One of our outstanding students, Grace Stratton, is currently
rehabilitating from surgery last year and she is using this time to create a website to offer insight and inspiration to both
adults and her peers. For me, her writing is Mercy-ing (the verb) to others. And, because Grace is a very accomplished
writer, I would like to use her words (with her permission) in this article – with some editorial amendments to make it
more concise.
“The reason why I am emailing you, is Letters to Corey. I know I have already sent you the link before, but I hadn’t articulated its
purpose to you, and some exciting stuff has happened that I wanted to share with you.
Jake Bailey, who I am sure you have heard of or seen in the media. The day that his remission was announced, I wrote a blog piece on what we can
learn from him, not because of his cancer or because of his adversity, rather the way he met such challenges. He ended up messaging me, needless to
say I was and still am very excited.
“I just read your writings on Letters to Corey, and I am absolutely blown away. Firstly, I need to thank you, because I was truly humbled and touched
by what you wrote. As I’m sure you already know, you are a truly incredible writer, and an inspiration yourself through that medium. It truly held me
captive as I read it through, multiple times. All I can say is keep doing what you’re doing, not only persevering in life, but also writing about it because
you’re doing an incredible job.”
I would hope for his kind words to hold true and it is a great aim of mine. I have gotten a lot more invested in the way we can take adversity and twist
it into tools of creation and positive affirmation. I am incredibly lucky in my ability to advocate for both myself and others. I recently advocated for a
group of cognitively disabled adults. My passion is evident for them simply because we must use our voices in aid for those who cannot. I am hoping
to do some work with both the trust here at Wilson and an organisation called the Stay Up Late foundation.
I hope Letters to Corey will become a resource for all people to become empowered and inspired. I write in such a way where disability is taken in aspects
to become applicable to all people. Every person, at some point, will have to develop strength and resilience; every person should know and understand
the presence of kindness and compassion. That is why I began the writing I did. I hope by writing in this way, disability awareness becomes highlighted.
I just wanted to tell you some of the things I am hoping to get off the ground. Who knows, maybe one day, I’ll meet Jake Bailey! That might be one
of my goals! Thank you for reading this.

Student Leaders’ Welcome Lunch for
Year 7 and New Year 9 Students
The Year 7 and new Year 9 Welcome Lunch is an annual event run by the
Head Girls. A hot summer’s day, cool drinks and sausage rolls galore was the
perfect way to welcome our new year 7s and 9s. The girls enjoyed a huge
selection of food and drink and loved mingling with peers from within their
year as well as socialising with members from the 2016 student leadership
team. Our new girls were delighted to receive a handcrafted welcome gift
package, made by the leadership team, consisting of essentials for newbies
such as Carmel College survival guides, bucket lists, and bookmarks. This
lunch was a great opportunity for us to get to know the younger students
and hopefully it helped them to feel more comfortable and welcome to our
Carmel community. Both the leaders and new girls loved talking with each
other and we definitely formed friendships that we will never forget.

Clubs & Groups - Student Orientation
Day
Carmel’s annual Orientation Day and Student Clubs sign up day was
held this week and turned out to be a huge success. Many groups
proved to be popular amongst students as many showed interest
in clubs such as Young Vinnies, SAVE, Film Club, SADD, Literacy
Club, Astronomy Club, Service Group, Body Image, Asian Culture
Appreciation Club and heaps more! This was a great way for group
leaders to promote and advocate their clubs to students - new and old
- in order to encourage them to participate and get actively involved!
Reconciliation
Caritas
As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, it is our intention that over the
year all students will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament
of Reconciliation, sometimes referred to as the Sacrament of Mercy,
at school. The first session was this Wednesday when we were
very grateful to have many priests from the North Shore Deanery
join us so that over 150 students could attend. If your daughter
has not had the opportunity at school this Lent, there are many
opportunities in the parishes in the area at this time.
During the season of Lent we are called to good works and alms giving.
Atawhai Groups are currently collecting money for the annual Coin
Trail. The proceeds will go to the Caritas Lenten appeal which this
year supports the work of Caritas in Cambodia, as well as to our
sister school, Paul VI College in Samoa. In the aftermath of the
recent cyclone in Fiji and Tonga we are asking students to dig a
little deeper this year so that we can also send a donation to Caritas
for the relief efforts there. Thank you for your support.
At assembly this week the Year 13 students dressed
themselves up as ‘Compassion Coins’ and encouraged
their fellow students to dig deep for these causes.
Stations of the Cross
Wednesday 23rd March, 7pm.
Each year Carmel and Rosmini students together lead the Stations of
the Cross at St Joseph’s Church, Takapuna. Prayer, drama, music
and the beautiful voices of the Choirs from both schools always
makes this a sacred and prayerful occasion for Holy Week. Please
join us.
Maori Whanau Hui
All parents and whanau of our Maori students are invited to a hui
to meet our new Kaitakawaenga, Keri Hadfield, and our new Te
Reo Maori Teacher, Tina Peters, and share expectations for Maori
student achievement on Tuesday, 15th March at 6pm. The hui will
be followed by a light supper. If you are able to attend, please rsvp
to Sr Anna, [email protected] for catering purposes, by
Monday, 14th March.

Milicich
Natalie is our newly appointed
Director of Sport. She has had an
extensive career working in High
Performance sporting environments
and in addition over 20 years experience working in the
finance industry. Her expertise in strategic planning, her
passion for sport and working with young women has
inspired her to join the team at Carmel College. Her vision
is to see sport at the college grow in participation and to
produce high quality athletes who are successful at all
levels.

Congratulations to Talia Wall, Year
13 who was nominated and awarded
Student Volunteer of the Month at
Harbour Sport. Talia is highly involved
in the Touch programme here at Carmel
and has played a large part in ensuring
that Touch is played at Carmel. Without Talia we would not
have found enough referees and a coach for our 1st team.
She helped with the facilitation of trials and has been a
great asset to the Sports Department, especially at this
busy time of year.

Congratulations to Jorgia Bult selected to be part of the
NZ Waterpolo Regional Training Centre (RTC sessions),
to Sarah Stewart and Kaitlin Rooke who have been named
in the New Zealand Water Polo Born 2000 Squad and are
currently training for the 2018 FINA Youth Women’s World
Championships.
Maddison Ryan, Year 11, and Heather Lock, Year 10, have
both been chosen for the North Harbour U16 girls waterpolo
team travelling to Hawaii on the 31st July through to the
9th August 2016.
Also, to Nina Brown who at the end of Term 4 received
the prize for Year 7 Goalie of the Year and Grace Stephen
who claimed a well deserved prize; Most Promising Year
7 player.
U15 NZ Touch Rugby
Congratulations to Heather Lock who has just been selected for the
NZ Touch Academy. Heather travelled down to Christchurch to attend
the Touch New Zealand Junior Nationals and has been selected as
a Mixed Player (only 8 girls are named in this team / squad from
about 230 Mixed Grade Players that attended this tournament.)
Sports Congratulations to the following;
Lola Wood, Year 7, who competed in the recent Championships of
Athletics coming away as the Auckland Champion for the 11 Year
Old 800 metre. Lola also received Silver in the 1500 metre and
Bronze in the 400 metre.
Making Sense of
Anxiety in children
and youth. A course
for parents.
Course Overview:
The escalating level of anxiety
in our children begs for an
explanation as well as a solution.
Dr. Neufeld sheds light on this
age-old problem, paving the way
for natural interventions that can
actually get to the root causes
as opposed to just managing
symptoms. This course brings a
fresh and promising perspective
to one of our most troubling and
perplexing human problems.
Although the focus is on children,
this enlightening material will
benefit anyone suffering from
anxiety.

Four week training. One evening
per week. The course “text” is
four 1 hour DVD presentations
by Gordon Neufeld. Adrienne
will assist course participants
integrate ideas into their
own parenting practice using
exercises and illustrations.

Adrienne Wood is an experienced
teacher in low decile, multicultural
New Zealand secondary schools
and is a mother of two. She has
a particular interest in children
presenting with complex
behavioural and learning needs.
Currently she is undertaking
post-graduate research at
the University of Auckland
exploring issues around student
engagement and disaffection.
Caitlin O’Reilly, Year 8, who won a Gold medal at the New Zealand
Nationals held at the Sir Owen Glenn pool for 100fly. She also broke
the club record for 100 and 200 fly.
