Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The
first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom
the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the
widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had
died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was
the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the
family name by the son was equal to immortality. A
widow whose only son has died could lose all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring
the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically
raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading.
What are Christians called to do today? We may not
be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle
hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert
a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly
and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the

Always Forward,
Never Back
The late Msgr. Thomas McGread, who was pastor of St. Francis
of Assisi Parish in Wichita, Kansas for more than 30 years, and
is called by some the “Father of Stewardship,” said as he
looked back on his experiences supporting and forming stewardship in his people, “The real success of stewardship in our
parish is found in the hearts of the people. Without a conversion of heart, no one is able to give of themselves as Christ has
asked us to do.”
In today’s Second Reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians, Paul speaks of his conversion, a change of heart that provided him with the inspiration and the strength to become the
apostle and evangelist he was. We are called to conversion by
stewardship but it does not have to be as dramatic as Paul’s experience.
Nevertheless, conversion influences us to be good stewards, and living stewardship translates into a lifestyle of service. Msgr. McGread recognized that serving rather than being
served could be challenging for people. He said, “Stewardship is a spiritual way of life and
that is never easy, but anyone I have ever known who became committed to being a steward never went back. Once they adopted that way of living, they were in it for the duration,
for life.”
We must understand that to be a disciple of Christ, to actually be one of His followers, requires not just conversion, but action, doing something to serve others. There are many
opportunities for service right here in our parish and in our communities.

SOLEMN EXPOSITION OF THE
BLESSED SACRAMENT
The worship of the Eucharist
outside of the Mass is of inestimable value for the
life of the Church. Please visit our Lord during our daily
Blessed Sacrament Adoration, Monday through Friday
7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. On First Fridays we have 25 hours
of Adoration from 7:30 AM to Saturday 8:30 AM. Many
parishioners have signed up to spend an hour with our
Lord, but we still need sign ups for early morning hours.

New Book Club Selection
“Jesus understands human sufferings, he has
shown the face of God’s mercy, and he has bent
down to heal body and soul. This is Jesus. This is
his heart.” Thus begins the next selection for the
Carmel Mission Book Club, The Church of Mercy by Pope
Francis. Selected by the club in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, its
message is certainly timely and moving. The club meets in
MacMahon center at 2pm Saturdays.
BIBLE STUDY
We continue our exploration of the Book of Acts to the
Apostles this and each Wednesday morning at
10:30 - 11:30 at McMahon Center. All are invited. This
exciting book shows us the history of our Catholic Church
as it moves from Jerusalem to Rome and the world.

Come to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for a little
R&R: Rosary & Reflection. We will be reflecting on the St.
Pope John Paul, II, letter on the Rosary and praying the Glorious
Mysteries. Bring a prayer intention as we pray for the needs of
the Church and the world. Meetings will take place

The Legion of Mary
During the year of Mercy, the Carmelite Seculars invite you to
our monthly Masses at 10:30 a.m. every second Saturday at
the Carmelite Monastery—27601 Highway 1, Carmel. Pray a

Last year you responded to my call
for help to create 100 hats and
scarves for some of the homeless
women of the Monterey Peninsula.
You were so successful that we were
able to provide 125 sets for a Christmas Giveaway at the
Gathering Place (now known as Gathering for Women).
They were so well received that the Soroptimist Monterey Bay representative has asked if there is any way we
could do this again this year. The good news is that we
have seven months to do it! And for those who thought of
it but could never quite find the time—here’s another opportunity! The scarf requirements are the same:

Yarn: Any—but we’re thinking warmth

Hats: Size—approximately 22 inches around
Our group meets every Monday in Crespi Hall from 9:00

Theology on Tap offers fellowship and discussions
about topics important in our lives today, with interesting

Our speaker this month is Deacon Bill Ditewig, Ph.D., Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Monterey. Deacon
Bill is the author of Women Deacons: Past, Present, Future
(Paulist Press, 2011). He will lead a discussion on the history
of women deacons in the early Church and the possibility of
ordaining women today. Pope Francis recently called for a
commission to study the possibility of ordaining women as
deacons. This very timely meeting is in response to the Holy
Father’s action and makes a great follow-up to our March
meeting when we talked about the history of women in the
Church.

Carmel Mission Quadrangle Courtyard Restoration-Viewing Platform and Exhibit
We will have a special meet and greet with project principals of the Quadrangle Restoration.
This will include Vic Grabrian, the President of the Carmel Mission Foundation and
Brian Kelly, Project Manager for the Carmel Basilica and current Quadrangle restoration.
Our Mission Museum Manager, Jewel Gentry will also be available throughout the day to talk
about our museum’s newest living history display and pictorial exhibit located in the
quadrangle courtyard loggia, just adjacent to the Mora Chapel.

Singing is Good for You
Good for your brain: Singing enhances mental awareness, concentration and memory.
Makes you feel happy: Singing releases endorphins which make you feel happy and releases oxytocin which helps alleviate anxiety.
Improves heart rate: Singing increases heart rate which reduces the risk of heart disease
and when you sing in a group your heart rates sync together to give a feeling of calm.
Improves circulation: Singing is actually a good workout for your lungs, improves circulation, tones your abdominal and intercostal muscles.
Feel healthier: Singing improves your posture, helps you sleep, increases confidence, boosts
your immune system, opens up your sinuses and respiratory tubes, and improves your
breathing pattern.
So why haven’t you joined the choir?
As we are entering Ordinary Time, this is an especially good time for new choir members. We are especially looking for tenors and
basses at this time. Why not come to a Thursday night choir rehearsal? Come at 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. in the Basilica and see for yourself
how much fun it is to be a member of the choir. We will not have Thursday rehearsals in July.

Please join us in Crespi Hall today after Mass
Junipero Serra School’s Annual Student Art Show
On May 21st JSS parents came out for Art Night, our annual celebration of Junipero Serra School’s immensely creative student body. Art Night is the primary fundraising source for the art program at JSS, led by
Ms. Christine Riso. Parents are always delighted at the breadth of style, subject and materials that comprise
the show. This year was no exception – the show was diverse and vibrant!
Besides the individual student art on display, each class from Pre-K to 7th grade had spent the previous
months creating a single special art project to be auctioned off at Art Night. The live bidding for the class
projects is always the highlight of the evening, and it raises much-needed funds to sustain our studio art program. All in all it was a wonderful evening of fellowship, school spirit, and celebration of the gifts God has
given us in each one of the children that attend Junipero Serra School.
We invite you to stop by Crespi Hall after Mass today to view highlights from this year’s art show!
