A Busy Morning at the Bakery
Carrie is a baker. Every morning, she goes to work early to bake some things
before customers arrive. One day, Carrie had a list of cookies, cupcakes, and
cakes to make.
First, Carrie made the cookies and the cupcakes. Then, she started the
cakes. Carrie mixed the flour, sugar, vanilla, eggs, and milk. She poured the
thick batter into square metal pans. She put the pans in the oven to bake.
Later, as Carrie was taking the cakes out of the oven, she heard her first
customer come into the bakery. It was Ms. Davis, a teacher from the school
nearby.
“The third graders at my school are having a party this afternoon,” said Ms.
Davis. “I’d like to order 20 chocolate cupcakes and enough vanilla cake for 24
students.”
“I can have those ready in a few hours,” Carrie said. After Ms. Davis left,
Carrie put the 20 cupcakes into boxes. Then, she used her list of cake sizes
to decide which size cake Ms. Davis needed.
Carrie frosted the cake and put it in a box. It had been a busy morning, but
it was worth it. Carrie knew that the third graders at Ms. Davis’s school were
