Ranganathan (fondly remembered as ‘Art’ Ranganna) passed away on May 23. He was 88. Ranganathan’s life was dedicated to creating theatre sets and providing lighting for stage dramas. He worked with some of the most famed Tamil drama troupes such as Ragini Recreations, Ennessen Theatres, Ina Theatres, Sri Theatres. This led to his involvement with many directors and artistes like V. S. Raghavan, K. Balachander, Major Sundararajan, Sreekanth and many others. Here is a tribute written to him by his son R. Muralidharan Ranganathan was born and brought up in Mylapore, in his house opposite Vedanta Desikar temple. The house, more than 120 years old, is now a heritage building. He attended P. S. School. After his graduation, he started working for South India Timber Company as an accountant. He rose up in the ranks to become the manager. All along, Ranganathan was very interested in drama and theatre. With his father, he would watch the English plays performed by foreign troupes visiting the city. He was drawn to the life-like sets used in English plays. This inspired him to start his own theatre-setting group. It was not a very lucrative business, and he got a leg up when his childhood friend and theatre artiste V. S. Raghavan commissioned him to do the sets of his play ‘Sathurangam’, based on the English play ‘Someone Watching’. His sets were designed with great creativity and aesthetics and earned him standing ovations every time the curtain was lifted to reveal the stage. Most notable among his sets are the single-set stage for Sathurangam, the portrayal of early morning life in a multistoreyed apartment for K. Balachander’s Ethir Neechal and the revolving stage set for Jaishankar’s Jai Theatres Ninaivu drama. Along with his brothers, Ranganathan also managed a stage lighting company. Stage-set design was his passion and he did not accept any form of remuneration for designing the sets. But with the decline of demand for dramas and the onset of movies and television, Ranganathan found it difficult to make ends meet. Then, it was K. Balachander who helped him by making him the manager of his Min Bimbangal production company. He was with Min Bimbangal until retirement in 2010. Ranganathan is survived by his son Muralidharan. Contact him at 9841140350. M. S. Sadasivam, 87, passed away on May 21. Sadasivam was born and brought up in Mylapore. He studied at P. S. School and then completed his college education at Loyola College. He started working for AIR a year after graduation and worked there till his retirement in 1988 as Asst. Station Director. “Sadasivam’s lineage can be traced back to the saint-composer Thyagaraja,” says his son. “We are direct descendants of the saint’s brother. Appa also used to sing very well. He was well known among top music artistes of his days like MLV, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Balamuralikrishna to name a few.” Sadasivam is survived by his four sons. Contact the family at 9952982668, 9442631153. S.Yegna Viswanathan, (86), retired P. A. to Asst. Director of Animal Husbandry and a native of Periyakulam passed away on May 25. He was a resident of Mandavelipakkam for over 28 years. He had served in Madurai and Ramnad districts before moving to Chennai in 1987 after his retirement. He is survived by two sons and a daughter and grandchildren. His family can be contacted at 9789980597, 9486449008. His family is at No. 47/1, Veda Graha, 5th Trust Cross Street. June 6 - 12, 2015 5 MYLAPORE TIMES De Monte Colony; Tamil film drives the curious to Alwarpet Report by Bama Ranganathan Is De Monte Colony in Alwarpet haunted? Or is it just a spooky place? In the past, this colony of a single-design, independent houses, all in various states of decay has made it to an informal list of haunted spots in the city. There have not been any reports of people experiencing spirits. Yet, the dark lore keeps growing. And now, a Tamil film, D’Monte Colony said to be inspired by this dark lore has brought the colony, not far from Hotel Park Sheraton loads of curious visitors.. Last week, I decided to check out this place. I live in the same area. With me was our photographer, Madhan. We made our first tour at about 11 a.m. Just beyond the Bejarong restaurant on TTK Road, we turned left. Two pushcart tiffin joints did roaring business, using the walls of the first row of De Monte Colony houses to stack their utensils. The vacant plot beyond had been turned into a parking lot. Huge, leafy trees greeted us as we walked into the inner street of the colony. On either side, were houses, identical in design - vacated many years ago. We inched close to their walls - a broken piece of furniture here, a frame without a picture there, fallen rafters and decaying door frames. We imagined the quiet, slow life these families must have led. Houses built on land donated by the rich Portuguese merchant of the 19century, John De Monte after whom this colony is named. The land was donated to the Catholic Church which raised houses for a private company in the 1960s. In recent times, life embedded as residents vacated this place and then, tiffin stalls and men wanting a quick drink haunted it. At noon, a eerie silence fills the space. Vegetation has run wild but the arching trees generate waves of fresh air in the May summer. At the core of the neighbourhood, is Kalaignar Park. The park was originally built for use by colony residents and was re-designed later. Residents of Abhiramapuram and Sriram Nagar go for walks here, in the mornings. At noon, we find a few people sitting in the park, talking, walking, generally relaxing. Further, we spot a huge, lifeless bungalow. It stands out in a large plot. It is two- storeyed, has a outhouse and a huge well and lots of large trees. A brooding atmosphere. As we walk further, more trees greet us - they are like umbrellas over the lifeless houses. On the edges of the colony, taxi drivers stand listlessly against their cars, waiting for customer calls. We are back at the colony, on Abhiramapuram 4th Street at 9 p.m. The traffic trickles off. As we walk in, all sounds and light die off. There are street lamps here. They are rusting. Without bulbs. The inner streets are pitch dark. So dark I cannot see the face of my photographer Madhan who is a few feet away. The swish of the trees fills the air. It is unnerving to say the least. Few people would want to be here at night. As we walk to the other side, we spot a steady trickle of people - they are taking pictures of the houses on their smart phones. Some are on bikes and drive in, slowly. The Tamil film must have aroused their curiosity. None step out to get into the abandoned houses. The muck, the insects and the lore discourages them. And De Monte Colony’s quiet past merges with its dark present to stoke the imagination of people. UPDATE - On Thursday, church managers arranged to close all but one street to the colony. Metal sheets were used to dam the area. A watchman said many people were visiting the place after watching the Tamil film and the church managers wanted to stop this movement. 6 you going to sell / buy Cars. At Adyar Seaface, M.R.C Nagar, Chennai, Ph: 33661234 June 6 - 12, 2015 V I N C E N T 11 MYLAPORE TIMES D ’ S O U Z A Off and on, I have been visiting St. Mary’s on Armenian Street, officially a co-cathedral. On the working day, this is as noisy as the business and market district where it stands. Excited boys of St. Mary’s Anglo-Indian School, 176 years old play games all over the campus and the steady stream of the faithful, especially on Tuesdays, devoted to saint Anthony keeps the church busy. My purpose is to research on the Presentation Union nuns from Ireland - the first foreign missionary nuns to land in Madras. These are the nuns who went on to establish a series of convents and schools in our city, the most famous of them being Church Park. I studied at another of their schools, St. Anthony’s in Egmore. This school completed its centenary two years ago and I have begun researching on it in recent times. St. Mary’s has a more famous neighbour - the Armenian Church. The two then can be part of a bigger enterprise. A tour of some of the city’s heritage churches. For one ‘Madras Week’ event, we curated a tour on the churches of San Thome. It wasn’t easy - one of the nuns gave us a mouthful when I led the group into this 16th century, Portuguese - built church. Walks and tours are a great way to explore neighbourhoods. And I am happy that many young, enterprising people are curating tours on the weekends. One group is of passionate photographers, another loves to cycle and a third is made up of foodies while there is one on Tamil heritage. This Saturday, the Chennai Food Walks group is out to explore the eating joints that are holes-in-the-wall types in Mylapore. Yes, they will touch Rayars and Kalathi to gorge on steaming idli-vada and drink ice-cold rosemilk, but its curator, Sridhar Venkataraman tells me a few new eateries, ‘hot’ for food have been included in the Walk list. This community has done Sowcarpet and Purusai, Triplicane and Mambalam. And there could be more to curate - in Anna Nagar and Perambur, in Tambaram and in Mirsahibpet. But this curation can happen only if residents of the area share information, help do a recce or be the leader of the pack. Walks can be educative and fun. Can someone curate a shopping tour of Pondy Bazaar? For bindis and sari falls, glass bangles and soft toys. Or, with the D’Monte Colony film tickling people, a Haunted Spaces tour? R. K. Mutt was relaid recently. Now, a central road median is being constructed on the south side of this busy road. Work is on to build a pucca median - workers were at work this week in the area beyond the Mandaveli MTC bus terminus junction. Chennai Corporation has said that this road will be widened. Not much has been heard on this plan. A plan to build a yover at the Mandaveli MTC bus terminus unction, east-west was dropped after the local community strongly opposed it, saying if a yover was to be built it must be north-south to handle the heavy traffic that way. The civic body has dropped that plan. RUSSIAN EDUCATION FAIR A second education fair that showcases education in Russia is to be held at the Russian Cultural Centre on Kasturi Ranga Road, Alwarpet. It is on June 6 and 7. The fair offers admissions to over 600 engineering and 60 medical colleges in Russia, besides scholarships at some and placements at some other campuses. The co-sponsor of this fair is the Consulate of the Russian Federation in south India. REMEMBERING RANJANI HEBBAR Remember Ranjani Hebbar? The young, talented Carnatic music vocalist who was making a mark on the concerts circuit. She died young, battling cancer quietly. And when she passed away, many artistes and rasikas mourned her demise. This young artiste will be remembered at a Chennai event on June 9. The Remembrance Day event features a talk by senior vocalist S. Sowmya and a concert by Prarthana Sai Narasimhan. The concert is supported by an endowment of Jayalakshmi and P. R. Srinivasan. The event is at Raga Sudha hall, Luz. 6.15 p.m. onwards. 12 June 6 - 12, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES Paramacharya jayanthi celebrations The auditorium of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was packed to the aisles last Tuesday evening when Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi swami of the Kanchi Mutt addressed the audience here on the occasion of the 122nd jayanthi of the maha periyaval, the Paramacharya. Priests recited the Vedas at the start of this event and the swami followed it up with a discourse. A book on the sage of Kanchi was released on this occasion. (photo 3) A series of religious events were held elsewhere in Mylapore since June 2 morning to mark the jayanthi of the Paramacharya. At Sri Sankaralayam in the Chitrakulam area, there were day-long religious events which culminated with a procession taken out in the area. (photos 1, 4) Another event was held at the Vaaniyar Sangam hall near Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore, where the community took part in reading of the vedas by priests and other rituals. (photo 2) 1 GOOD SAMARITANS OF Dr. RANGA ROAD HELP STUDENT EXCEL D. Mohan, a student of P. S. By MYLAPORE TIMES. www.youtube.com/mylaporetv June 6 - 12, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES LIFESTYLE A LIBRARY IN A NOOK By Bama Ranganathan For book lovers everywhere, here is a novel initiative: The Little Free Library. And there is one in R. A. Puram. Here is how it works – if you have books lying around and have a shelf to put them on, you have a Little Free Library. It works entirely on goodwill. People can borrow and donate books free of charge; there are no cards to keep track of the transactions. The steward (or the facilitator) of the library needs to check the condition of the books and the library periodically. The library runs by itself. The first free library was started in Wisconsin, USA by Todd Bol. This idea was then picked up by his friends and other people who read about it and spread fast all over the country. Shannon Zirkle-Prabhakar is an American who has made Chennai her home after marrying localite Prabhakar. She lives in Egmore. The LFL in the city was first initiated by Shannon. She is a photographer with a passion for reading. Says Shannon “ I am an avid reader and I have always borrowed books from the library. Here, I couldn’t find a library close to home, and soon I was buying books to satisfy my craving. That became an expensive hobby. Then I remembered the ‘Little Free Library’ initiative”. Shannon started out with the books in her collection and a shelf to house them. The idea took off. She started the first in Aug 2014 and now there are 8 libraries in the city. Check out the one at Vaer Organics Store in R. A. Puram. This houses a lot of children’s books. Says store owner Sriram “A lot of our customers are moms with young children. These books can keep the children engaged while the mom browses the store”. For a listing of libraries in the area, go to https://www.facebook.com/ notes/little-free-library-of-chennai/ library-locations/1447623298846405?hc_ location=ufi. Suchitra is the steward of the LFL at Vaer. She used to run Children’s Space, a non-profit children’s library in Alwarpet. The library housed books for children from birth up to 10 years of age. But she had to Suchitra Chari close down as she couldn’t make ends meet. So, she passed the books from her collection on to the LFL at Vaer. She says “I wanted to get children interested in reading. My library used to have sessions on story-telling, book reading etc. When I closed down, I passed the books on to LFL. This was the best way I could get the books across to the kids for free.” To open an LFL in your neighborhood (or your home): l Check out http://littlefreelibrary. org/getinvolved/ l Find a Location -Put your library in a location that is easily accessible to the public. l Put up a bookshelf l Attach a sign and announce on the FB group about your Little Free Library (LFL) l Put up a few books You can also register your library by going to the official website of the LFL: http://littlefreelibrary.org/. He was a cartoonist and a muralist. Natarajan was born in Ammanur, near Tiruvarur to A. N. Ramamurthy and Rukmini. He attended school at Ammanur and then at Trichy. His talent for drawing found an outlet in his caricatures and sketches, even during his early school days. It was during his days at Trichy that he was spotted by writer Karichan Kunju who brought him to Madras. Here, he formed friendships with eminent artists like Gopulu and Sagar and writers like T. Janakiraman. He drew inspiration from these people and considered them as his mentors. He started drawing cartoons and art works for several noted publications. Some of his popular creations are Thumburu and Alamu-Ammu which were popular among readers. Natanam is best known for his murals. He created designs out of various materials like stone, metal and wood with intricate designs and symbols. He had a deep interest in culture and tradition and this enabled him to bring those aspects into his work. His murals are now adorning the Pandurangan temple at Thennangur, Govindapuram temple, airports and big stores. His experience and skill in this field made it possible for him to incorporate different cultures and scenes into his work. And hence, his work can be seen outside India too – in USA, Singapore, Malaysia and more. In recognition of his creativity in the world of art, particularly with respect to murals, Natanam was the recipient of various accolades and awards. He is survived by his wife Rajalakshmi. The family residence is at 1 Dev Apartments, 3rd Street, East Abhiramapuram (near Sai Baba Temple). Contact 8220310008. Kooram Veeravalli Murali, 69, passed away on May 16. He was a resident of Mylapore for 65 years and resided at Sri Adhikesava Perumal Koil Sannadhi Street. Here is a tribute to him written by his daughter Sabitha. My father was born on 14 October to Kooram Veeravalli Srinivasan and Janaki, in Kumaravadi (Kancheepuram district). His father was employed at Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam. When my father was two years old, the family moved to Mylapore, while his father continued to work at Tirumala. Father attended P. S. High School and completed his schooling there. Right out of school, he was drawn to the principles of Kamaraj. This led him to get involved in social service activities in support of Kamaraj. The principles stuck to him till his death - he would always wear whites and remained humble and modest. He enjoyed acting and movies. He was a big fan of MGR and watched all his movies. He was part of some stage drama troupes and also acted in a movie ‘Valayal Saththam’ in 1987. He also ran a library called ‘Saraswathi Library’ in his house on KP Sannadhi Street. My father got married to Vijaya when he was 26. When his dad passed away a year later, he had to shoulder the family responsibility. That was when he joined the Mylapore Club as an accountant. During his service at the club, he had the opportunity to meet and become friends with important personalities in various fields. Actor Nagesh was a friend. He worked at the club for more than 40 years. His responsibility there grew step by step, until he retired as manager. He is survived by his wife M. Vijaya, sons M. Srinath and M. Parthasarathy, daughter Sabitha and grand children. His last rites were performed in Srirangam. Contact the family at 9840722506, 9840747616. The menace of share autos at Luz Corner is growing by the day. The drivers park right in the middle of the road from 8am till 8pm making life difficult for other vehicles. They park along the medians set up for MTC buses to stop at the bus stop - like a parallel stop! When I spoke to the police at the signal they shrugged off as if they are not responsible for managing these share autos. I hope this letter will get the ACP/DCP - Traffic for Mylapore to address this issue. - Kalidas, CIT Colony, Mylapore. Huge dumping of debris along Buckingham Canal In recent times, there is lot of dumping of debris in the Canal along Kalvivaru Street, off Kutchery Road. The 20 feet width of the canal has been reduced due to this dumping. This at the time when government is spending hundreds of crores for deepening and widening of the water ways, particularly the Buckingham Canal and Cooum in Chennai. Many transport vehicles are parked in that stretch. If that stretch is properly maintained it can take more traffic. With Royapettah High Road being ‘one way’ from north to south from the Sanskrit College junction, it is a bad idea to have another parallel road (Kalvivaru Street) also as ‘one way’ in the same N-S direction. It will make better sense to have two way traffic on Kalvivaru Street or at least one way in S-N direction. - Sundaram, Mylapore Can 20 rupees get you closer to God? It has become a rather regular practice of allowing a set of people to have a closer darshan of the deity of Karpagambal at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple - for a Rs.20 special ticket. There is no regulation of the number of people allowed per batch or simple awareness among the privileged ones about blocking the view of the less privileged devotees to have a normal darshan standing below. Normally the special tickets were issued just as an alternative for people who can’t stand in the long, free darshan queue. These are new practices that have crept in the name of value additions even though a revenue generation perspective is considered. Wonder how twenty rupees will give some people the the opportunity to get closer to god and increase their probability of getting whatever favour we need from her? - Ram Iyer, Mandaveli Looking for paid parking in San Thome I read the report on the parking lot planned in the Sri Kapali Temple property. I am looking out for a paid parking lot for my car in and around San Thome / Madaveli. Those in the know may contact me at 9841327794 / 9941453802. - Vincent Xavier Salespeople are disturbing people at Nageswara Rao Park Refer the report in Mylapore Times on salespeople targeting people at Nageswara Rao Park. We are here to relax at the park and these marketing people are making us feel uncomfortable. Giving cards, asking us to check our BMI and coaxing us to visit their offices. They are grabbing park space. - Saranya, Mylapore. ( posted at www.mylaporetimes.com) Soiled diapers create civic problem: a suggestion to address the issue I would like to appeal through your newspaper to young parents. The soiled disposable diapers of their children are carelessly thrown into the dustbins and stray dogs are attracted by the smell. The dogs litter the whole street with these diapers. Parents/guardians can flush the feces in their toilet and then dispose the diaper properly. It will be one small step in keeping our environment clean. - Rama Prabhakar., R. A. Puram Plaint against TANGEDCO, kudos to Mylapore Post Office First, the grievance: Last Saturday, May 30, we had the electricity supply cut for our area from 9 am to 4 pm. When I contacted 24994310, I was informed it was the scheduled power cut for maintenance, announced in the previous day’s daily newspapers. I subscribe to The Hindu and The Times of India. I searched the Friday issues of both the papers, but I couldn’t find any information about the following day’s power cut in Luz Church Road area. TANGEDCO must improve its local communication on ‘power cuts’. Next, the commendation: I had been to the Mylapore Post Office on Kutchery Road on the 1st of June, a Monday. I had to deal with the claim of my late parents’ savings bank a/c. Despite the rush, being the first of the month, I could see that the staff were really friendly to all customers. I had a very pleasant experience in Counters 3 and 6 (twice) and on the 3rd floor. The only minor inconvenience is the delay, visibly seen in the routine postal transaction counters. Kudos to the Post Office staff in Mylapore. - Ganapathi S. Vibhu, Mylapore June 6 - 12, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES Schools re-opened for the new academic year on June 2 and the neighbourhoods of schools bustled that morning as students made their way to campuses. Karunanidhi turned 92 on June 3 the buzz around his house in CIT Colo- ny, off Dr Radhakrishnan Salai was muted in the morning. Party flags lined the main road, flex banners were up at many street junctions but the cadres were not around. The action was on at Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence. But by 12 noon, the CIT Colony scene turned colorful - various music groups, some playing a brass band and some on the chenda kicked up lots of celebratory music and cadres did a jig. Karunanidhi’s daughter, Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha member hosted a lavish buffet lunch, catered by a leading hotel chain. People were invited in to partake of the food and by 1 p.m. some 200 people had dined to their heart’s content. Published and owned by Vincent D’Souza.
