Is it for the devotion that it evokes, the grandness that it presents or the sheer experience of a float moving in a temple tank? On Day One of the teppam festival of Sri Kapali Temple, thousands of people streamed in and out of the temple tank to be part of this unique three-day celebration. As the float did the mandated five rounds of the tank on Tuesday, staying close to the water line on all four sides of the tank, people who sat or stood on the banks had a brief glimpse of the gods and said a short prayer before walking out of the tank. It had been a very quiet Tuesday evening - there was hardly any hint of a festival to unfold that was at about 5.30 p.m. People walked into Sangeethas for a cup of coffee or a light tiffin, early shoppers picked up veggies and women picked up flowers from hawkers seated along the tank side on South Mada Street. And then, at about 5.45 p.m. the music of the nagaswaram and scattered notes of a three-piece brass band floated down the mada veedhi and that caught people’s attention even as some others pulled out their mobile phones to shoot pictures. The mobile floodlights system seemed to have failed so the gods, seated under two giant umbrellas were dulled by the fastfading light of dusk. For those who wished to make an offering, the procession stopped briefly every few metres. Traffic on the main road roared crazily, trying to outpace the procession till the local police brought some order. Shoppers at Khazana and Sri Murugan stepped out to gawk. In minutes, the procession entered the main gate of the tank, on the R. K. Mutt Road side and the gods were taken into the illuminated float and the first set of rituals followed. The steps on all sides of the tank began to fill up and the float began its first round just a shade before 7 p.m. A few people walked down to the water’s edge and lit karpooram, some setting it afloat in the water. All around us, the illumination, strung on all four sides of the tank, in the central mantap and on the eastern gopuram of the temple created a colorful tapestry in the disturbed waters even as the ‘thai’ moon rose into the north eastern skies, a bit hazy this evening. Big-built volunteers who walked along the tank’s edge, pulled the float on its journey, using long thick ropes even as two police patrols seated inside inflatable floaters kept an eye from the waters, at the ready to respond to any accident. The second round of the teppam took 19 minutes. This was an orderly event and though it was a weekday, the attendance was big, mostly women and children. Watch videos of the teppam at www.youtube.com/mylaporetv February 7 - 13, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES KUMBHABISHEKAM The mahakumbhabishekam of Sri Velleeswarar Temple in Mylapore was held on February 2 morning. As the elaborate rituals and religious ceremonies unfolded that morning, continuing those that were held here on the previous days, people gathered inside the temple and on South Mada Street. Holy water was taken up in pots and poured over the kalasams that top the tall gopurams. A temporary structure was built for people to climb to the top. Priests then sprinkled the water on the large mass of people on the street below. 5 6 MYLAPORE TIMES CHECK THIS OUT SHOPPING MOVIES, DANCE, ART MOVIE TIME WOMEN’S WEAR Salwar suits in muls, silk cotton, kota and jacquards are on sale at Banas till Feb 14. And that story is visualised by artists who painted on the wall of the MRTS station of Greenways Road recently. This art was part of the Street Art Project promoted by the Goethe Institut, Chennai. The artists chose to hold up an elderly woman who seems to have been abandoned by her children. Ganeshan and Chithra of 1st Main Road in R A Puram who seem to know more about this woman say that this woman’s husband, Rama Gounder was a good gardener who used to work in a few houses in R. A. Puram area - he died of mouth cancer a decade ago. The Ganeshans say that after Rama’s death, his wife used to clean the gardens in a few local houses but family splits seem to have driven her to the life of a destitute, living outside Greenways Road MRTS station. She now seems to suffer from dementia. Passersby drop coins and notes as charity and the local hand-cart food hawkers around the station offer her food. So when a bunch of artists landed at this poorly-patronised station to paint a section of the wall, they were inspired by the woman on the steps, created a visual of her and titled it ‘Vazhkai’ ( Life). The woman will hardly realise her life has inspired the art on this wall. It doesn’t mean anything to her. The Ganeshans, who shared this story hope that local residents can help to get the woman rehabilitated. The Ganeshans can be reached at 24322890 / 9444002890. l Photos by the Ganeshans REMEMBERING S. Mail to - [email protected] February 7 - 13, 2015 V I N C E N T 7 MYLAPORE TIMES D ’ S O U Z A There is a picture that I am looking for. It is in my imagination box. A picture of woven cloth, colored and put out to dry in the sun in the South Mada Street zone of Mylapore. It is a picture that will go with stories of this vibrant street senior people have shared with me. If I do not get this picture then I would like to visualise the scene with a Fine Arts student of Stella Maris College and bring it to life. And there is another picture that slips into that box. Of the late Bharatanatyam dance guru K. J. Sarasa. Seated inside a traditional house on this street, teaching her small set of students. It is a visual I would like to see from the street side. I am sure a creative young art student can also bring this to life. Some December Seasons ago I suggested to at least three people - two dancers and one journalist who writes on the performing arts - that they curate a Walk on the dance heritage of this zone. A few feeble steps later, the effort fizzled out. This though should not stop a young dance student from seizing the idea, researching on the subject and making it real. Streets and colonies hold lots of stories. In every neighbourhood. In an effort to take the alumni of my school to their childhood days, I am making time to document four streets that made the core neighborhood of this campus in Pudupet, New Town. We called them simply 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Street. One is called Thulasingam Street and another. Car Street but those names were either unsaid for Std.III kids or not too cool to use in our conversations. As I walk down these streets, very slowly it surprises me how tiny, tiled houses and Madras terraced ones survive like fossils between tall apartment blocks. Shooting pictures will be easily done. Extracting stories will call for patience. And putting them in context will require some deal of work. Once all that is done I hope a smart techie will bring it to life and this will enable hundreds of men and women who belonged to this neighborhood or lived most of their school life here, rewind to the 60s and 70s. With some drive and passion, such efforts enrich social history. Often times I receive calls from students of architecture, seeking tips on documenting Mylapore. This is project work. How many times will they keep on documenting the same zone? These students ( there must be at least 200 young people attending architecture schools in our city ) would do well to document neighbourhoods that hold the histories of our people. Perhaps one or two streets. Perhaps a colony. BEDE’S UNDER-16 TEAM WINS TNCA CRICKET TOURNEY By Our Staff Reporter St. Bede’s A.I.H.S.S. ‘A’ team recently won the TNCAHercules Roadeo inter schools cricket tournament and lifted the prestigious C. Ramaswamy trophy for under-16 school-level cricketers. It beat the Don Bosco team from Egmore. This was a welcome victory to celebrate after the school’s under-14 team lost to arch rival, Santhome School in the TNCA tourney for under-14 players not so long ago. Coach Sathyanarayana Rao says the boys exploited the conditions at the Murugappa ground, making the best of the dew factor at this time of the year and rattled the Egmore players. Don Bosco won the toss and chose to bat first but its players had to face some steady, good bowling by St Bede’s. Off spinner G. Vishwanath an was the pick of the lot, taking 3 wickets. His team mate spinner B. Ashwin also took three wickets. Between the two, they had the Don Bosco boys in a tizzy and the Egmore team ended with a paltry score of 73 runs which the St Bede’s basysmen knocked off for the loss of four wickets. St Bede’s batsmen Rayan Jebaraj scored an unbeaten 29 runs to see his team home easily. V. Dineshkumar was the captain. Coach Rao says his team expected a tough match and praised his bowlers for bowling tight and making the best of the ground conditions. Rao named left arm spinner S. Ajithram for his consistent bowling performance in this tourney. Rao’s assistant Armugham also helped the team shape up this season. Chief guest Subashish Das, Head of Retail, T.I. Cycles of India and guest A. Viswanathan, chairman of the schools and colleges committee of TNCA were present at the finale. n STATE PLAYERS The consistent performance of some St. Bede’s players earned them a place in the Tamil Nadu state under-16 team which has been playing a few matches this season. The players are - S. Abhishek, V. Dinesh Kumar, S.Ajithram and Lokesh Raj. REMEMBERING DANCER T. BALASARASWATI ‘Natya Samaradhanam’ - the 30th remembrance day of veteran dancer T. And it happened on January 26 at St. Bede’s in San Thome Report by Harish Krishnasamy 25 years after they had stepped outside the gates for one last time as schoolers, these boys, now young men chose to meet all over again for an ‘old boys’ jubilee reunion. These Old Bedeans came from all corners for this meet at the San Thome campus on January 26. The class of 1990 of St. Bede’s School were a determined lot - the meeting had to happen and it did. Over the past year, February 7 - 13, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES these classmates had begun to reconnect with one another in earnest - indeed, the smart phones were inundated with messages and comments on ‘Whatsapp’ and social media. Reunion planning kicked everything into high gear. We were whipped into a frenzy of old photo uploads and ‘inside’ jokes, and I found myself waking up every day to find tens of new comments on our Whatspp group. As the date drew closer, Whatsapp seemingly took on a life of its own. Anecdotes, jokes, asides and gossip flowed freely. And then the final day dawned! Some of us now live as distant in places as the USA, the Caribbean, Europe, Dubai, China, and across India. And yet, despite the distances, the time differences and the quarter-century that has somehow passed since we were a complete, physically cohesive unit of raging teenage hormones, more than 60 of our batch-mates landed up in Mayajaal Resorts on ECR Road for the preparatory session for the school reunion that would take us back in time. Class-mates started trickling in slowly. It was heartwarming to see the obvious joy at coming together; and it was rather amusing to follow the antics of those who were now big time executives. The real names were lost in the plethora of nicknames that we used to call each other - Mental bhai, Lassi, Anupal, Maya, Vella ball, KB, Samiyar, Pattu mami, Dr. X, Cabs, Irrutu, Chellam and Mr. Beans. The high school union preparatory session went high gear with organizer Basil Srinivas (now Inspector of Police) setting the rules of the game on that day. Vinod and Charles (HP shared services) provided the logistics support for the event. Nelson (from Dubai) and Manoj (from Boston, US) chipped in with the telecommunications support. Michael Bala (Matrimony. com) was the core media host. The stage was set for the 26th high school reunion. On the D-Day - 26th January 2015, over sixty, 40plus aged ‘teenagers’ walked in with the same T-shirts and khaki pants, which they were used to wearing 25 years earlier. The event was launched by Fr. Rector Don Bosco, who hailed this reunion as a tribute to the value of youth, for which the institution stood for. Fr. Sebastian, the Headmaster of St. Bede’s (during 1988) gave the welcome address and called on the Bedeans to raise and maintain the standards of the school in every act of theirs. A leading diabetologist in Chennai - Jai Shankar - opened the session with a heart rendering poem in Tamil, dedicated to all the teachers, after which the cricket star of the 1980’s Anish Thomas - presented a glimpse of the school life and traced 25 years of friendship. Most of the teachers who had assembled there had put in close to 30 to 35 years of their life in educating children. The PT master - Samuel - sang the Bedean anthem, after which each of the teachers spoke their heart out. Most ‘old boys’ who had assembled here were in tears as they realized that they could not repay these teachers who had shaped their characters. After the felicitation ceremony, I being the school pupil leader of the batch proposed the vote of thanks - lunch followed. At the end of the day, our reunion was really not about discussing our personal list of accomplishments and achievements. It was about how the long 25 years after we had spent time together at school had impacted us. We now look forward to the 30th year reunion. l The writer is at [email protected] MYLAPORE TIMES February 7 - 13, 2015 LIFESTYLE UNIQUE GIFT SHOP An exclusive gift boutique - ‘Gifted’ opened its doors to Mylaporeans during the last week of Jan. The store features hand picked and treasured gifts that promise to leave a great impression on clients, friends and refurbished and now sells gift articles. We havent discontinued the watch business though - we continue to sell watches, alarm time pieces and wall clocks at this store and also accept bulk orders”. Hetal talks about how it all started, “I started thinking about opening a store relatives. Corporates and individuals will find a variety of interesting offerings for occasions like weddings, birthdays, friendship day, mother’s day and so on. The business is a part of the Doshi group of companies and is run by partners Hetal Doshi and Harshad Doshi. Hetal says, “The Doshi group started with the watch business at the present location in 1965. Last year, the store was in 2013 and participated in several exhibitions to find out how the customers reacted to the products sold. Traffic regulation for teppam fest demonstrates the positives of such a zone As hackneyed as the word is, there seems to be no better way to describe Mylapore as it showcased itself during the teppam festival. Pristine glory. Shorn of auto rickshaws and other vehicular traffic, including two wheelers, this part of Chennai was a spectacle this past week. Lights festooned the Kapali Temple and the temple tank and colourful vegetables, fruit and flowers at the roadside markets made up the mosaic. With no vehicles to bulldoze you or vehicles to weave through, one could just stand and stare at this one-of-a-kind spectacle. It was a reminder of the days when just a handful of volunteers of ‘Namma Demolish building that once housed Mandaveli Post Office I appeal to the Corporation of Chennai not only to remove the encroachment at the junction of Mandaveli Street and R K Mutt Road but also demolish the unused old building ( which housed the Post Office) at the junction in the interest of pedestrians and for smooth flow of traffic. - R. Chandrasekaran, West Circular Road, Mandaveli Speed-breakers need to be painted Many speed breakers háve come up in many roads in and around Mylapore, which is a welcome step. However none of them are marked with white paint, which cause inconvenience to drivers, especially motorists. We request the police to do the needful. - N. Mahadevan, M K Amman Koil Street, Mylapore Mylapore’ ( a voluntary group) used to block vehicular traffic on the inner streets leading to Kapali Temple on pradosham days. That was an effort to further the plea for ‘walk-only’ streets. Going by the buzz now, there seems to be a new move to ask city police to restrict vehicular traffic on the mada veedhis. There can be groans from many who feel compelled to walk even if they can. The larger picture has to be looked at. Smart cities can surely co exist with heritage and one could complement the other. - Geetha Iyengar, R. A. Puram Gas delivery; diversion suspected I realised that domestic gas cylinders were not delivered against a couple of my SMS bookings I made and looked at the company’s website about deliveries to my home. Multiple times my cylinders seem to have been redirected to someone else (particularly the booking of 18-12-2014) and probably the subsidy money usurped. This is probably not a one-off case and happens to many low usage consumers. And it cannot happen without the connivance of the dealer. I have raised a complaint with Bharat Gas to take action against the dealer (Ref no. 438729). Such gross illegalities call for strong punishment like cancellation of dealership. I urge Bharat Gas to take quick action. I have also asked why SMS cannot be sent after delivery of cylinder. Such a simple step can prevent largescale misuse of valuable public money. - Ashok Rajendran, Mylapore It was a total surprise and great relief to find that the kerb along the entire stretch of the platform in front of Vasant Vihar housing the JK Foundation on Greenways Road has been cleared of a long row of hire vehicles unauthorisedly parked 24/7 for over years. Nearly 30% of road width and the long stretch of platform on this side is now available for use by the public. Moreover the nauseating urine and garbage stench emanating from this entire stretch all these years has vanished. This long standing nuisance was brought to the notice of authorities a number of times in the past through letters published in your newspaper as well as Times of India. We only wish that this should not be a temporary relief as we find that the kerb area is dug up at regular intervals for some PVC pipe-laying work. It is also posssible that this sudden action on the part of authorities is to facilitate smooth passage of the present Chief Minister’s convoy through this road. Due to continuous parking of vehicles on this stretch, slush and mire has accumulated - the compound wall of Vasant Vihar has become a public urinal. It is high time the civic authorities take steps to remove the dangling cable wires and rolls of cables from the lampposts on this platform to enable public to walk freely on this side of the road. Being an important thoroughfare housing VIPs like state ministers and High Court judges on one side and residential areas such as Bishop Gardens and Kesavaperumalpuram on the other side, the local public expect the authorities to keep this stretch neat and clean curbing encroachment and unauthorised parking of vehicles. - V. Gopalan, Kesavaperumalpuram Pat and pull for civic staff The newly laid speed-breakers with reflectors on our roads suggests that the Corporation has at last woken up to the fact that these should be a deterrent to speeding vehicles and not a bone shattering experience to motorists. That is a bouquet. And now for the brickbat: The callous attitude of the civic staff manning the street lights who switch off the street lights when it is pitch dark in the mornings when many people go for their walks deserves criticism. Hope the officers direct them properly. - Ramaswamy, Srinivasa Avenue. Mandaveli community seeks mini bus On behalf of Mandaveli residents, I request MTC to introduce one mini bus from Mandaveli to Anna Square in the route followed by21N in the past. Many people will benefit. - Anantharamaiah, West Circular Road, Mandaveli. Opening of store in Abhiramapuram; store promoter responds This is with reference to your news report on people protesting opening of a new store for vegetables and fruits. We are the promoters of this store and we intend to be of service to local people. Our packing is done at our main store and not at the proposed store on 4th Street, Abhiramapuram. So there will hardly be any waste that will be generated here. Also, we have made provision for parking 5 cars and there will be a security guard to streamline vehicles. - G. Ravichandran, Annai Pazhamudir Solai. February 7 - 13, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES Regd. with Registrar of Newspapers of India 65779/95 16 MYLAPORE TIMES February 7 - 13, 2015 Mail your media notes to [email protected] SATHYAVATHI RANGARAJ SURVIVING CANCER Sathyavathi Rangaraj is 73, is proud of being a housewife, likes her morning walks in the apartment campus in Luz and enjoys kutcheris whenever her brother’s son Sanjeevi finds time to take her to. Sathyavathi is a cancer survivor. A woman who realised she was in an advanced stage of cancer over a year ago and saw through it to get back to life as it has always been. This native of Kumbakonam makes little of her battle with cancer. She says that with great treatment and your own mental power you can see through the pain even late in life. It was in late 2013 that Sathyavathi realised that the menstrual discharge was abnormal and extended. She immediately consulted her personal doctor who suggested a biopsy. Uterian cancer was confirmed - in its third stage. Sathyavathi was referred to a city hospital and chemotherapy treatment began. “It was the toughest time of my life,” she recalls.”My hair dropped, I felt very, very weak, I vomitted and my legs were often swollen.” What saw her through these trying times? “The warmth of the young doctors who treated me and the care of my family”. At the end of the chemotherapy phase, the doctors suggested to Sathyavathi that her uterus be removed. “I just followed the doctor’s advice. I trusted them,” says the woman whose late husband worked for Reserve Bank of India. She will not say it but her family members suggest that it was an inner resolve and a quiet determination that helped Sathyavathi see through her trying times. Also, her family stayed close to her. Very close. Did she meditate or do yoga? “No….I just carried on with my daily life, doing the housework, spending time with family and friends,” says Sathyavathi. In the time that we have this short conversation it becomes evident to us that Sathyavathi does not really make much of her illness. There is a philosophical outlook that surfaces in her. “I think the positive and warm attitude of my doctors who were in their 40s rubbed off on me and that helped,” she says. The past months, she has not had any major health problems. She keeps her date with the doctor.
