KALVI VALARCHI NAAL AT
ST. ANTHONY’S GIRLS SCHOOL
The students of St. Anthony’s Girls’
Higher Secondary School, Mandaveli celebrated Kalvi Valarchi Naal on July 15 at
the school premises.
Several clubs were also inaugurated on
this day. Rev. Bro. Irudhayam of the Montfort congregration presided over the function and distributed the prizes to the school
toppers and students who had secured full
marks in the class XII exams. Kuppuraj,
researcher, Anna University was the guest
of honour. Retired teacher of the school
Vinitha was the special invitee.
Later, a cultural show was staged by
the students. Plays were put up by the
clubs – ‘Silapatikaram’ by the Tamizh Club
and ‘Prince and the portrait’ by the English Club.
SCHOOL DAY HELD AT LADY SIVASWAMI
GIRLS SCHOOL
Actress Sachu was the special guest at the 148th School Day
celebrations of Lady Sivaswami Girls School, Mylapore held
on July 23. The class XII school topper and resident of Mylapore
N. Aparna Rajalakshmi, who secured a total of 1172/1200,
received the Smt. Indira Memorial Shield for her performance.
A dance drama ‘Krishna Leela’, a Tamil song and a Tamil drama
‘Thenali Rama’ were some of the cultural programmes put up by
the students of the school later.
BAMBOOLA PLAY
SCHOOL IS 13
Bamboola Play School recently celebrated its 13th
anniversary at its R. A. Puram campus. The tiny tots
planted saplings, sang songs and danced to preppy tunes.

The kindergarten kids (LKG & UKG) of Montfort Academy School, San Thome celebrated Colour Day on July 19 at the school premises.
The children came dressed in bright colours and also bought objects, fruits and vegetables

inaugurated by Bro. Alex from Santhome Hr. Sec. School in the presence of Rev. Bro. Sahaya Raj
– the principal and correspondent and Bro. Saveri, the vice principal of Montfort Academy.

Arjun Raghavan: produces app
to help people be secure
Arjun Raghavan is a student of class XII at M.Ct.M
Chidambaram Chettiyar International School on Luz
Church Road. In April, he released an Android application
known as HelpMe! as an endeavour to provide a better
system of safety to women, children and seniors. HelpMe! is a mobile application designed for safety.
The first version of the app covered only India; the second
and current version covers the world.
The app covers two kinds of users. One is a user that
needs the app as a safety tool and wants to identify five
close relatives and/or friends as emergency contacts. The
other user of the app is a good Samaritan who wants to help
others by registering as a responder within the app. At the
simple tap of a soft button, a user can send out a distress
signal to any and all users of HelpMe! who are nearby – both
emergency contacts and responders.
Arjun says he has written to the PMO and the ministry
of telecom on the application of this app and is awaiting a
response.

ADITI BHARATH: VOLUNTEER AT RIO OLYMPICS
Aditi has just landed
in Rio; to volunteer at the
Olympics. This one-time
resident of Venus Colony,
Alwarpet and a graduate
from Stella Maris College
is currently pursuing her
masters in human resource
management at Georgetown University, Washington
D.C. During her college
years, Aditi interned with
Zomato, and Totus and then
grabbed the opportunity to
volunteer at the Olympics.
She applied on a whim and
did get a call back. Aditi was tested on her
language skills and had
some interviews via Skype. Not wanting to burden
her parents with the bill
for the trip, Aditi started a

Sri Krishna Sweets conferred the`Nallor Virudu’ award
on K. Muthuswamy and Subbulakshmi. Muthuswamy is
the founder and honorary secretary of Nandi Fine Arts
and Subbulakshmi Muthuswamy is a vocalist, violinist, music educator and founder of Sri Lakshminarayana
School of Music. The award was presented for their
contributions in the field Carnatic music.
Subbulakshmi is an`A’ grade artiste of Radio Ceylon
and has given concerts on the violin, some along with her
father and with her famed brothers L. Vaidyanathan,
L. Subramaniam and L. Shenkar. She served as the
Headmistress of the Bengal Association School in Chennai.
Her students include her daughters M. Lalitha and
Nandini Muthuswamy, violinists. The Muthuswamys are
residents of V. M. Street, Mylapore.

San Thome. His son, Gopinath writes a few

K. Prakasam was born on
May 8, 1936. He joined State
Bank of India at the age of 18 in
the Chitoor branch. He went to work, thereafter, in various branches in south India. He worked at the Mount Road
branch for a very long time till his retirement in 1996. He was a State Bank person all through his life and the
bank was his family Prakasam was a cricketer and had

profession who graduated from
Annamalai University, he started his
career with T. V. S. Motors in Madurai and served in
T. V. S. Lucas and other organisations in Chennai before he
moved to Adnoc Ltd. in Abudhabi.
Returning to Chennai in mid-90s, he devoted his time to
Carnatic music, astrology and religious activities. He has
compiled a list of Carnatic music songs with the names of
ragas and composers; this compilation was published.
He is survived by wife Rajalakshmi and daughters
Vasanthi and Vanitha. His family resides at 9, Sixth Main Road, R. A. Puram.

There are quite a few of them – one on
T. T. K. Road (opposite Spoonbill) and
on St. Mary’s Road (near T. T. K. Road
junction). A franchise of the shop, named
Sandwich Square, is now open on
Seshadri Road, Venus Colony too.
The shop was started by Sheik Dawood
in 1999 as a modest sandwich outlet –
bread-butter-jam and bread omelette was
the main fare. Now, there are four outlets

D ’ S O U Z A
This month, promise your children you will show
them a part of our city they don’t know. And you do!
Or don’t!
I suggest this because we are in the month when we
get to celebrate our city. Once Madras and now Chennai.
Or for some, still Madras!
As one of the catalysts of the annual Madras Day
celebrations (www.themadrasday.in), I am keen to get our
children to know the city better.
Where can we start?
On a Sunday morning, plan a tour of the Fort. You will
remember this trip for life.
Fort St. George is not Wonder-la or Water-a-la-la.
And yet it is a fascinating destination inside our city.
Ramparts and gun carriages. Cupolas and statues.
Fort streets and fort walls. Vestiges of the 17th century.
Barracks and moats.
Yes, all these may not be well-maintained or grand but
they hold the character of a fort that led to the formation
of our city.
Give yourself at least 90 minutes, shoot lots of selfies
and drive off for a great brunch. If you have time on your
hands, then you must also visit the Fort Museum; your
kids will love this place.
I wonder if you and your kids have been on the MRTS.
I think this is a quick way to take in the city. I particularly like the section from Mylapore to Madras Beach; as
the train rolls along the elevated section through what is
essentially Madras of the 19th century, the window seats
offer some great views for peanuts.
How about climbing a hill and a hillock?
Have a light breakfast, drive down to Little Mount,
park your car or bike at the foot of the hillock and take the
road that leads to the church associated with the legends
of saint Thomas. Take in the kitsch Christian imagery and
the marks of the local legends.
Then, drive westwards to St. Thomas Mount, take the
road uphill, park midway and walk to the summit. There
are small surprises along the way and the view from the
top is great.
Exploring any place calls for time. You must make for
it in your plans.
That is why the theme for this Madras Day’s
PowerPoint Presentation Contest for school teams is
‘Streetscapes’.
We are asking young people to choose an old street,
study its life and architecture, its heritage and character,
document it and present it publicly.
We hope such events will engage young people with a
city they may have not explored yet.
So I urge you to take your kids out to a city zone less
known to you all. Even a stroll around Parry’s Corner will
do for starters. Woes of Muthu Street
In Ward 125, all roads except Muthu Street were relaid. Why?
When it rains, rainwater from other streets flows into Muthu Street and floods our place.
The drain system is badly maintained here. Many of our houses have flooded in the past.
We hope the local councillor and Mylapore MLA heed to our plea and address the
civic issue.

Krishnapuri park’s
lighting is dead
The park and local streets
in Krishnapuri are often in
darkness after dusk.
There are 11 lamp posts in
Krishnapuri park and right now,
only three lights are burning and
the rest have burnt out months
ago. Street lighting leaves a lot
to be desired.

Unclean toilets at Nageswara Rao Park
The public toilets at Nageswara Rao Park are hardly
cleaned. The place is unhygienic. Also, visitors dump food
and tea cups all over. This needs to be checked.

‘Gems from our Literature’ - this was the theme at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School’s annual day celebrations held on July 29
at Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet. The programme included songs by an 80 member choir, an English play, two dance dramas and a futuristic Tamil play.
The programme was presided over by T.R. Mani, President, N.B.G.E.S. The chief guest for the programme was Lakshmi Menon, vice-president
(sales and new initiatives), The New Indian Express.

It was the morning of
aadi perukku and amavasai. And the Sri Kapali
Temple zone was packed
with people, busy with their
day’s rituals and prayers.
Also packing into that
zone was a huge body of
beggars. Local police tried
to move them to a corner
but their efforts were
challenged.

to rid Mylapore of beggars
- offering them a space at
‘homes’ but few accept
his offer.
He shared this observation on his FB page - One
old begging couple refused
to move out of their place. I
know the same couple were
earlier counselled to go to
a home but refused to go.
How will they go?
The amount they get must
be too tempting to continue
the begging.
I watched them only for
a few minutes and found
that each person gives at
least 20 rupees. One gentleman says according to
Hindu dharma one should
offer alms. Fair enough. But
the interpretation of that
virtue in the current context
would mean, according to
me, you don’t perpetuate
CROOKS OUTSIDE TAHSILDAR’S OFFICE
If you need to do business outside the Mylapore
tahsildar’s office and engage brokers who hang
around here, be warned of some who cheat.
Police have just arrested two people for making
and selling fake community certificates at a bunk
shop opposite the tahsildar’s office in R. A. Puram.
Police said that a Teynampet-based broker and
a woman at a local stationery shop indulged in this
crime and had been at it for some years now.
The Revenue Dept. lodged a complaint and the
two were arrested. The Mylapore tahsildar office is at No.28,
Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Road, R. A Puram
( near the Greenways Road MRTS station).
