A cow decorated with garlands, kumkum and turmeric was worshipped for the Gho
(cow) puja celebrations held outside Sri Nandalala Trust at Ranga Road, Mylapore on
Aug 25 morning. Done every year for Sri Krishna Jayanthi, it is believed that the deity Sri
Krishna, also known as Gopala, is pleased when cows are taken care of and protected.
EVENTS AT SIVASWAMI KALALAYA
Two events will be held at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore this week.
The first, a sport meet, will be held on Aug 27. Mita
Venkatesh, principal, Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar is the chief guest at the school’s
junior sports meet to be held for classes LKG to V
in the morning. M. V. Rajasekhar, IAAF Coach, RDC
Jakarta, is the coach for the annual sports meet to
be held on the same day in the afternoon. At School

Colours
of Aadi

Take a walk around your neighbourhood during the month
of Aadi and you cannot miss the sounds and lights at Amman
temples this season. While offerings and charity are a common
feature at these temples, the rituals vary. In every temple, however, the main concept revolves around ‘purification’ and thanking
the deity for curing ailments. The first day of Aadi, or Aadi pirappu, began with
people drawing huge kolams, bordered with red colour or kaavi,
outside their homes and a visit to the temple. The next festival saw hundreds of devotees crowding at
Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple tank and Marina Beach - it was
Aadi Perukku, a ritual observed on August 2 this year.
Devotees gathered to pay tribute to nature’s contribution and
since it was Amavasai (new moon) also on that day, people took a
dip in the water and performed poojas to honour their ancestors. On the same day, the 101st Aadi Thiruvizha at Sri Nagathamman Temple at Mosque Steet, Mylapore commenced with the
vilakku puja - 108 women participated. The festivities also
included a kolam contest, an annadanam, special abhishekams for
the deity and a veedi purappadu around the streets of Mylapore
on Aug 7, the last day of festival. The next festival, Aadi pooram, was held on August 5. An
abhishekam was held for goddess Karpagambal (utsava moorthy)
at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple tank in the morning after which the
deity was decorated with colourful glass bangles and carried inside
the temple. In the evening, the deities at both, Sri Kapaleeswarar
Temple, Mylapore and Sri Velleswarar Temple, Mylapore, were
decorated with bangles which were then distributed to the
devotees. The ‘Festival of valaikappu’. The following Monday, August 8, it was the turn of the
devotees at Sri Kolavizhi Amman Temple, Mylapore to carry the
thee-chatti or fire pot. 108 men and women, with fire pots placed
on neem leaves, walked from Sri Mundagakanni Amman Temple,
Mylapore to Sri Kolavizhi Amman Temple. The deity adorned a
special alangaram - a ‘kumkum kappu’ on that day. The next day,
an abhishekam was performed with coconut water. On August 12, devotees gathered at Gangai Amman Temple,
behind Mandaveli bus depot, to witness a special festival.
Three men with their body pierced in 108 places (alugu) and with
a milk pot on their heads made their way from
Sri Mundagakanni Amman Temple to Sri Gangai
Amman Temple and offered the milk to the deity for
an abhishekam. They were followed by three women
dressed in yellow sarees with piercings in their
cheeks and several other devotees. Soon, it was the turn of the deity at Apparswamy
Koil Street - goddess Durgai Amman to be taken on
a ther around the streets of Mylapore. On August
15, some 100 people gathered to pull the ther which
stopped occasionally to accept the offerings from the
devotees. The same day, the festivities began for the
festival at Sri Bhavani Amman Temple at Sringeri
Mutt Road. A 30 ft illumination of the goddess was
erected here. Aadi festivities are not complete without a
fire-walk. On August 21, some 100 devotees gathered
at one such ‘walk’ organised by Sri Nagathamman
Temple, M. K. Amman Koil Street, Mylapore. Some
old practices still hold good in Mylapore.

Mylapore’s South Mada
Street goes into a tizzy
- colors change, hawker
carts’ content change, and
the screams of hawkers
also change.
And this was
evident on the eve of
Sri Krishna jayanthi.
And will be repeated
often through the rest of
this year and at
Pongal time.
Celebrations at
homes though
are becoming
simple and
symbolic. Understandably.
So we followed the tiny
feet of the lord at
some apartments to
see if we could
click some
pictures of the
festival and
listen to the
day’s experiences.
The Lakshmanans
of Norton
Main Road,
Mandaveli
had designed a
fantastic, large
kolam just outside the door to
the lift in their
block here.
It survived
the day!
They had
just completed
a round of bhajans when
we dropped in.
The image of Krishna
was on a miniature
swing, with fresh flower
garlands all around it.
The extended family of the Lakshmanans
filled the apartment; to
celebrate the festival.
Elsewhere, the
Srithar Chandra family in Abhiramapuram’s
4th Street who live in
an apartment had made
a few traditional sweetmeats for the day - here,
the puja room was decorated with fresh flowers
and crafts. The morning
ritual was over and we
were offered a warm
cup of milk-payasam,
specially cooked for the
festival.

STREETSCAPE IDEAS
The grand design for Luz Church Road had to be
dropped. But its architect is pursuing a few small
ideas and hopes Mylaporeans can help

The grandly-planned
street-scape for Luz Church
Road - wide pavements,
central pavement median,
displays of heritage spots of
Luz and Mylapore, special
lighting and street furniture
- is now history.
Some Mylaporeans challenged the idea, especially
the central median plan
and Chennai Corporation
dropped the plan the next
day, leaving no space for
other people to debate the
whole project.
Today, the wide pavements on either side of the
road are being hijacked by
hawkers. Some spots remain. And one such spot on
the north pavement, opposite Amrutanjan and
next to Nallis, this is being
designed - it will hold up a
neighbourhood map and
photos of local
heritage and have street
furniture. Work by contractors of the civic body has
begun.

Luz Church Road re-design
project hopes local residents
can further enrich this
spot. “People can line the
wall with potted plants, for
example,” she suggests.
As an extension of this
streetscape spot on this
road, Kavitha hopes to redesign the walls that wrap
the local TANGEDCO and
BSNL telephone exchange
offices that flank Nageswara Rao Park and the
street leading to Our Lady
of Light Church, Luz.
Just now, one corner is a
open urinal and some parts
of the rear wall has BSNL’s
promos painted on it.
“Can we use simple
murals to showcase local
heritage on these walls on
both sides?”, asks Kavitha.

How did it get its name?
Three school students told us part of the story this
past week.
They were students of Army Public School in this
neighbourhood. They were among the 13 school teams
which took part in the annual Power Point Contest on the
city’s history and heritage that we at Mylapore Times host
for Madras Week season.
This year, the theme was ‘Streetscapes’.
With SINA supporting us with the premises - that
still-cosy Srinivasa Sastri Hall ( could be great if it was
given better attention!) - this contest has been held for over
12 years now.
The idea behind this event is to encourage senior school
students to explore their neighborhoods, study and research
and then make a presentation in public, tapping into their
communication and public speaking skills.
The team from Army Public School registered in a tad
late. Midway, it had doubts about the road they chose - Butt
Road - and decided to study NSC Bose Road in north
Chennai. Finally, they settled for Butt Road.
And they did a god job; good enough to win the first
prize that afternoon.
Butt Road. There must have been a range here for shooting /
archery. Perhaps shooting. The area at the foot of this hill
was one of the busiest training and cantonment zones of the
British in Madras. And so one can imagine how the road
that skirted the range got its name.
The students tell us that part of the road is called Binny
Road and the part that skirts the entrance to the steps that
take you to the summit of the mount is Butt Road.
Another school had researched on St Patrick’s Road this one goes off Butt Road into the colony.
And so from two teams, we gained a fair amount of
information on two roads in St. Thomas Mount.
Every street, even the ones which came up two decades
ago have histories and lives. And they tell us a lot of the
place, the past and the present. If only we care to explore
them. And record them.
The simple work done by these student teams encourages us - can we build further on the basic work presented
at this contest and build an archive of the key streets in each
Chennai neighbourhood?
Can we also get senior school and college students to
enable this project and do so better, using new technology
tools?
I would like to hear from people - architects, tech-savvy
youths, journalists, teachers - who could be interested in
this project. Hosting a contest and putting away some work that our
students have done with enthusiasm must not be a for-theoccasion effort. It must grow.
So how did a street get to be called ‘Otha Street’?

Chaos of ‘one way’ traffic system

who recommended the
One Way traffic
system on the
Mada Streets at
Mylapore. After
the introduction
of the same this
is doing more
harm than good.
The only good
thing I observe is
that the road side
vendors have
been pushed back nearly 3 feet on
either side. This in turn facilitated the indiscriminate
parking of all types of vehicles.
Any system will be a success provided
the same is implemented with all seriousness. Now also it is free for all in all the
mada streets. Barricades placed at some
places on the streets create more confusion
for all of us.

was on the violin and Povanur R Vishwanathan on the mridangam. The day-long fest
featured many artistes and celebrates the works of Narayanathirtha, is held for
Sri Krishna jayanthi and is conducted by the Thirupoonthuruthy Trust, R. A. Puram.

Chaturthi. Daily events include
a yagasalai puja, laksharchanai and a veda parayanam.
The deity will adorn a sandana
kappu on all the days in the
evening. On Sep 5, a special
abhishekam will be held for
Sri Bala Vinayagar and a
veedi purappadu will be held
onSep 6 evening. Music
programmes will be held
every evening at 8 p.m.
