Many families have their unique collection of
images of lord Vinayaka. At B. Ramalingam’s
house on Srinivasa Rao Road, for Sri Vinayaka
Chathurthi the main image, made of clay was
surrounded by the family’s collection of
108 images of Vinayaka. These included images
made from rice flour, ruby, betel nut, grains,
silver and gold and a variety of other materials.
The family says these images have been
collected over three generations.

S. Ve. Shekher revives ‘Crazy Thieves’ play

Actor-politician S. Ve. Shekher has revived his Tamil play
‘Crazy Thieves of Palavakkam’. First staged in 1976, the
play written by Mohan who then came to be known as
‘Crazy’ Mohan after the play he wrote became popular,
the revivedplay with a new set of actors was staged on
September 6 evening at Narada Gana Sabha.
The story is about a group of thieves who break into a
house in Palavakkam, a neighborhood on East Coast Road
and stay there for sometime.
When Mohan wrote this play, very few people lived in
Palavakkam - the ECR was yet to become the busy area of
the city that it is today. The play is to to have a few more
shows in the city this season.

Over 90 students took part in the Chennai Quiz held for
Tamil medium students and held at Sir Sivaswami Ayyar
Girls School, Mylapore. Students S. Aishwarya and M. Suganya of Rani Meyyammai Girls School,
R. A. Puram were the winners. Guests were taken on a walk down the Marina sidewalk, to look at the buildings of the
British era that remain on this road. The event
was hosted by Story Trails.

Writer-historian K. R. A. Narasiah gave a talk on
‘History of Madras - from indigenous sources and folklore’ at C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation, Alwarpet.
Children got to know the history of the famed ‘Battle of the Adyar’
and to explore the edges of the Adyar Poonga on a photo-walk organised by Yocee.com. The guides were Revathi R. and
N. Ramaswamy. The walk started at Quibble Island Cemetery.
Namma Mylapore hosted a tour of Sri Kapali Temple to explore spaces
which feature traditional games. The tour was led by Chithra Madhavan,
Geeta Iyengar and Vinita of Kreeda.

S. GNANASEKARAN: NATIONAL
BEST TEACHER AWARDEE

S. Gnanasekaran, the
assistant headmaster of
P. S. High School (North) at
M. K. Amman Koil Street,
Mylapore was decorated
with the ‘National Award’ by
President Pranab Mukherjee
at an event held on Teacher’s
Day, September 5, at New
Delhi. Gnanasekaran, who has
been a teacher at the school
for 27 years, says he dedicates this award to the school
management, teachers and
the students of the school. “They had a huge role to
play in my success,” he said
in an interview on Wednesday. He first joined the school
over two decades ago as a
special teacher, and spent his
initial years teaching weaving and craft and guiding the
extra- curricular activities. In 2004, he started taking
social science classes and
later completed his doctoral
studies in education in July
2011. He was appointed
assistant headmaster of the
school in June 2012 and
received the ‘State Award for
Best Teacher’ from the TN
government in September
that year. So how did this teacher,
who travels from Minnal
village (near Arakkonam) to
the school everyday, make
an impact? He explains, “In a classroom, if there are 40 students, 20 students will be
bright, 10 will be average
and 10 will be below average. Everyday, I take one
hour of extra classes for the
students who are below
average in my subject.
From January of every year,
I extend it to 90 minutes. So
a student who fails in the
beginning of the year will
score five more marks at the

extra attention given to him”. This strategy has worked
for this awardee. And that is
not all. Gnanasekaran has
actively participated in AIDS awareness programmes, child
labour eradication campaigns, yoga initiatives and
cleanliness drives and has
received certificates from the
government for his services. He also takes care of
poor students at the school
and in his village by paying
the fees when some of them
just cannot do so and distributing uniforms to them. And for the past 20
years, he has sponsored
‘annadanams’ (community
meals) at his village and
at Vallimalai Murugan
Temple in Vellore district. Gnanasekaran who will
retire in May 2017 doesn’t
have too much planned
post-retirement. He says,
“I haven’t thought much
about what I am going to
do but I want to get more
involved in social work”.

MLA LAUNCHES COACHING
CENTRE FOR DISADVANTAGED
YOUTH TO PREPARE THEM FOR
CIVIL SERVICES EXAM
Topping his list of promises made
during Mylapore MLA, R. Nataraj’s election campaign was to focus on youths. He
has kept that focus in many small ways
this far. Now, a bigger project has just
been launched – a coaching centre to
train youths to crack the State Public
Service Commission exams/tests that
lead to government employment. Recently, the MLA launched the coaching centre
at the Corporation Community hall in the Sri Karaneeswarar Temple area of Mylapore. The MLA says he
has tied up with a private coaching centre that trains
people for the civil services exams and he will also
host former IAS and state cadre officers to give guest
lectures.
The training is for the less privileged youth and is
focussed on coaching them to crack the TNPSC exams.
Nataraj says there are vast job opportunities in the
state if one cracks the TNPSC exams.

The MLA hopes to soon launch what he calls ‘a
dedicated Mylapore grievances redressal portal’ and a
mobile App. He says this should help people to lodge
civic plaints and address local issues faster.

The Spirit of
Vinayaka Chaturthi

Monday, September 5, was a day of
celebration. It was the time to honour the
elephant- headed god Ganesha. Huge
idols of Ganesha at every street corner,
evening kutcheris and a cacophonic medley of music from different
corners - the day of Vinayaka Chaturthi. Students at The Grove School
Puja at
Jeth Nagar
has to burn the
whole night. On
the morning of
the festival we
get up at 4 a.m.
to do a small puja
and then break the
fast with water. In the
evening, we do Gowri puja,
for goddess Lakshmi and lord
Ganesha”.
R. Balakrishnan’s
extended family joined him
for the celebration. Says
Sundar, his son, “Preparations started early in the
morning and everybody
pitched in but it is my
74-year-old mother who
always oversees the ‘making
of the prasadam’.” They stay
at Fourth Trust Cross Street,
Mandavelipakkam.

prepared, a small
puja was done and
the items were offered as naivedyam.
At Preetha Rengaswamy’s home, prayers
were offered to a white
metal idol of Ganesha.
Says Preetha, “The idol
has been in my family for
over 40 years. Though we
do buy a new clay image,
it has been a tradition to
offer prayers to both the
old and the new idol every
year”. This family resides
on Warren Road.
Manasi Pandey of
Alamelumangapuram,
Mylapore had migrated
from Allahabad, Uttar
Pradesh about six years
ago. Fasting, she says,
is an important ritual
in her community. Said
Manasi, “We start fasting about two days before
the festival. It is called
Haritalika Teej. A day
before the festival, we go
to the temple in the morning and then light a lamp
in the evening. The lamp
assembled outside the
temples at street corners to
offer prayers to their favourite deity. A group of people assembled at the Kalyana Nagar
Association premises in Mandavelipakkam in the evening
to participate in a puja.

got together for an impromptu celebration. The
kutcheris at Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple at Luz and
Bala Vinayagar Temple at Warren Road, drew many

D ’ S O U Z A
Nostalgia envelopes me as I jot this on September 8.
On this day, Catholics celebrate the birth of the
mother of Jesus, Mother Mary.
She has different avatars in different places - be it
Bandra in Mumbai, Mangalore in Karnataka or
Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.
In south Kanara, this feast is said to have been first
grandly celebrated by foreign missionaries and over time,
the heritage of that past continues to lace the celebrations
today.
If you visit the old churches in this region of Karnataka,
the image of a baby Mary wrapped in lace and spotless
white clothes is seen in a glass case kept around the altar.
The fest is called Monthi Festh in this region and it
draws lots of families who are native to this region but are
now outside and abroad.
The monsoon is still active gardens are full of
flowers and children are enjoying their first phase of a new
academic year.
On the feast morning, communities gather to head to
the church in a procession, with children carrying small
baskets of fresh flowers. In the church compound, the final
set of prayers of the novena are said around the decked
image of baby Mary and during this time, children throw
the flowers over the image.
Fresh paddy is blessed during Mass and later distributed, along with sugarcane. It is also a time of thanksgiving
though those who work in the fields are perhaps not the
happiest because of the changing fortunes of agriculture.
The lunch, vegetarian is special - at least five vegetable
dishes are served on plantain leaves.
Families gather at the home of their parents or elders
for this celebration. Cousins from Mumbai and Dubai drop
by. It is a time to rewind and to chatter.
Festivals struggle to retain tradition today. And they
have become loud.
We have witnessed this transformation in the Besant
Nagar neighbourhood when the Annai Vailankanni shrine
hosts the feast at this time of the year.
In the early days, when Housing Board households had
the beach all to themselves, the pilgrims visited this shrine,
said a prayer and went home.
Today, thousands walk to the shrine from different parts
of city and the suburbs, hundreds of hawkers take over
the adjoining roads, people pitch tents on sidewalks,
amusement drivers take over the beach, garbage rots while
illuminations and amplified music sock visitors.
The same is the case with festivals elsewhere - today,
the Aadi celebrations are spread over eight weeks and
hosting a orchestra at a busy street corner is the crowning
feature of the festival schedule.
Religion can also provide loud entertainment,
I suppose.
Pleasant experience at Mylapore Tahsildar’s office’
I recently read a report on
brokers outside the Mylapore
tahsildar’s office cheating
people. I have had a good experience at the Tahsildar
Office on Greenways Road.
I was there with my
friend to get a legal heir
certificate as her husband
recently passed away. As
soon as we entered we had
a warm welcome - the man
sitting in the front office gave
us a seat and explained the
documents needed to apply
for the heir certificate.
Next morning we submitted all the relevant documents needed to get the
heir certificate and he gave a receipt for the
submission. He collected all the documents
and asked us to come in two days to meet
Revenue Inspector Chandrasekar.
Chandrasekar promised he would visit us
soon for verification. He was here the next
day and verified all documents. and asked us
to come in 4 days.
We were happy that we got the legal
heir certificate within 15 days and that too
without greasing palms.

Problems on
mada streets
Woes of residents of
P. S. Sivasamy Salai
I am a Seva Dal volunteer in
Sathya Sai Organisation at Mylapore
and help to regulate the traffic at
South Mada Street junction from
5 p.m. to 8 p.m. But there are many
problems. The vegetable sellers have
not been regulated. At many places
like near Hotel Saravana Bhavan,
Bhavans and near Lady Sivaswami
Girls School four wheelers and two
wheelers are parked in two lines. - S. Viswanathan, Mylapore
I write on behalf of the residents and pedestrians of
P. S. Sivasamy Salai. I want to highlight the hazardous
traffic conditions the pedestrians and residents of this
road face everyday. Many people are old and retired and
do not have cars and have to walk to shops and temples
but there is no proper platform. Also, lorries, trucks, and
taxis are parked on the existing platforms and roadsides,
forcing pedestrians to walk on the busy street.
We want proper platforms for pedestrians and we
need ‘No Parking’ signboards in this area. We hope
local MLA, R. Nataraj and the authorities address
our issues.

‘One Way’ can work if stake-holders
co-operate
One Way traffic system is not expected to reduce
the traffic. It has only proved to increase the number of
vehicles passing through a particular stretch.
For example, in the case of Royapettah High Road,
those who are going up to UCO Bank or State Bank of
Bikaner from Mylapore, are invariably forced to take a
detour via Kamadhenu, Vivekananda College.
In essence, by rerouting, the vehicles that need not
have to pass through this segment at all, are compulsorily forced to take this direction, thereby causing unnecessary additional flow of traffic. This will be the same
scenario as far as Mada Streets are concerned.
If this slated purpose is defeated by wanton encroachments and haphazard parking or violators of the
‘one way’ rule, then the problem lies not in the introduction of the new system but in the reluctance on the
part of the stakeholders to co-operate and take the best
out of it.

Would you consider ride-sharing on a
two wheeler? If yes, take a look at this.
Balu Balakrishnan and Rajan Ramachandran are the developers of a ride-share
app that hopes to promote two wheeler ride
sharing. It is an effort to reduce crowding of
the roads and the duo want this to happen
in Mylapore. In addition, the app will
facilitate an alternate mode of affordable
transportation.
Balakrishnan moved back to India
after living abroad for over 30 years.
He started out his life here with a good
intention - to try and use government
transport facilities and not buy a vehicle of his own. But this went down the
hatch - public buses were not reliable,
were overcrowded and did not have
connectivity to all parts of
the city.
An idea struck him,
when he was watching
commuters go in and out
of the MRTS station at
Thiruvanmiyur. “I saw
hundreds of motorcycles and scooters
whiz by while many
passengers, who got
off the MRTS at the
station, ran to catch
share autos to their
destinations. While
the share autos
packed their passengers, more than 90%
of the motor cycles
and scooters had
solo riders.” This image was
the seed for an idea.
“I reasoned that if
there is a convenient
way to enable sharing a
ride as well as the cost of
the ride it would help both
the ride giver and the ride
taker while at the same time
reduce the number of vehicles on
the road. It will be a win-win
situation all around.” he says.
He proposed the idea of developing a smart
phone app to Rajan, who was happy to come
on board and give it a go. After three months
of work, they had RIDO, an Android based app
for two wheeler ride share.
The mobile app allows a Ride Taker and
a Ride Giver, whose travel routes match, to
connect with each other and thus enable
two-wheeler ride-sharing. There is also another benefit to this
ride-sharing. Many parts of the Mylapore
area are not conveniently connected by public
transport. One has to take either an auto or
a taxi. Two wheeler ride-sharing can be an
alternative mode of transportation. RIDO uses a proprietary algorithm to
match a Ride Giver and a Ride Taker and
determines convenient pick up and drop off
locations without either one having to make
any detours. For now, RIDO enables an on demand rideshare. There is also an added functionality of
an electronic wallet so that sharing the cost is
a hassle free experience for both parties.
