’Neath oaks that so long have stood watching,
Oh halls of our college, ye stand;
Afar on the distant horizon,
The Smokies rise, lofty and grand.
With beauties of nature surrounded,
Two centuries’ memories thine;
And so, oh our college, we love thee,
Close ’round thee our heartstrings entwine.

Guest Speaker
Ms. Jones
Oh days in the old Alma Mater
Spent in classrooms, on campus, or track;
Each one full of tasks and of pleasure,
Once gone, they can never come back.
Then sing while the days are still passing,
With voices exultant and free;
Fair Tusculum our college forever!
All hail, Alma Mater, to thee!

History and Traditions
In 1794, the Rev. Hezekiah Balch founded Greeneville College. In 1818, the Rev.
Samuel Doak and his son, the Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak, established Tusculum
Academy. Greeneville College did not reopen following the Civil War, and it merged
in 1868 with Tusculum College, forming Greeneville and Tusculum College.
In 1908, the College’s name changed again with the merger with Washington
College which had been founded by Rev. Doak in 1780 as Martin’s Academy. The
new name was Washington and Tusculum College. This merger ended in 1912.
Tusculum
College
Tusculum College is thus recognized as the oldest college in Tennessee and
the oldest co-educational college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Tusculum is the 23rd oldest operating college in the country.
The College colors of orange and black are taken from the colors of Princeton
University (College of New Jersey), the institution from which Rev. Balch and Rev.
Doak graduated.
Tusculum was named by Rev. Doak to recognize the home of president of the
College of New Jersey, the Rev. Jonathan Witherspoon – a signer of the Declaration
of Independence. The name Tusculum comes from a community near Rome, Italy,
that was the home of the Roman educator and philosopher Cicero who, along with
others, identified the Civic Virtues that form the bases of the civic republican tradition.
That tradition emphasizes citizens working together to form good societies that in
turn nurture individuals of good character.
The dress of the academic procession reaches back to the Middle Ages. First in
the Church, then in guilds, academic life revolved around the Master of Arts, where
the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master. When the Academic Costume Code
is followed, it is possible to identify the highest degree which the wearer holds, the
college or university that awarded it, and the course of study. The distinguishing
features are the cut of the gown, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the lengths
and colors of the hood.
The Mace Bearer carries the mace which is a symbol of the College’s authority.
His purpose is to defend the President of the College. The Mace Bearer must always
be in sight of the President. The presence of the mace indicates the college faculty
is present to conduct formal business.
Bachelor’s degree honors recipients wear, in addition to the standard academic
regalia, cords designating grade point average: black for 3.5 to 3.74, orange for 3.75 to
3.94, and gold for 3.95 to 4.0. Graduate students earning a 4.0 GPA wear a gold cord
and tassel. Graduate students earning a 3.95 -3.99 GPA wear a gold cord. Bachelor
of Arts recipients who are members of the Alpha Chi Honor Society wear blue and
green cords. Bonner Leaders wear sage green and silver cords. Members of Iota Tau
Alpha, the national honor society in athletic training, wear a blue, red, and yellow
cord. Members of the President's Society wear cords of orange and silver intertwined.

All People That on Earth Do Dwell
All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell, Come ye before Him and rejoice.
Know that the Lord is God indeed; Without our aid He did us make;
We are His folk, He doth us feed, And for His sheep He doth us take.
O enter then His gates with praise, Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always, For it is seemly so to do.
For why? The Lord our God is good, His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.
