actively involved with the Northern California Elevator Industry
Group as Past President and has served as Chairman on the NAEC Certification
Board. He feels that a major industry issue is public awareness; our industry is
unfamiliar to most. “The politics and complexities of our industry are unique. Many
are ignorant to the realities and have unrealistic expectations. This often results
in unnecessary financial and logistical hardship/frustration. There are not enough
resources for the average consumer.” Erik has three children. He enjoys biking,
hiking, golf and music. sports, fly fishing, target/sporting clay shooting and reading.

David Smarte, Director of Safety, Training and Special Projects,
at Delaware Elevator Manufacturing in Salisbury, Maryland.
Smarte has over 33 years’ experience in the industry, beginning his career with Vic’s
Elevator, Armor Elevator, and Otis Elevator, and became a mechanic while working
for KONE (previously Armor Elevator). He moved to Delaware Elevator as a service
supervisor, and progressed to his current position. Smarte is actively involved with
the Associated Building Contractors Board of Trustees, NAESA Certified Inspector,

Fifteen NexGen group members met in Florida in February of this year for
an annual summit to discuss a variety of topics and issues facing the group.
Throughout the course of the three days, the group addressed issues related to
their careers in the elevator industry as well as those facing the NAEC organization
and how NexGen can be a part of growing and supporting the organization.
Through a combination of speakers on topics such as social media marketing and

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
IMPERIAL ELECTRIC CORPORATION
Around the time Henry Ford was
introducing the Model T – the
Imperial Electric Company started
manufacturing electric motors in
Akron, Ohio.
Today, 107 years later, Imperial Electric
is still making motors at its Akron
headquarters – and has evolved into
a leading technology company that
designs and manufactures a wide array
of motors for world-class customers in
Elevator and other markets.
Imperial Electric’s industry leading
elevator machines and motors are
well known: ACPM traction machines,
permanent magnet motors, AC and
DC elevator motors, AC induction
motors, generator sets, gear boxes,
and gearing. Many hundreds of
thousands of Imperial motors have been
installed in commercial buildings and
unique locations throughout the U.S. –
including the Statue of Liberty, Space
Shuttle Launch Tower, New York Stock
Exchange, San Francisco’s famous Coit
Tower, Atlanta’s Peachtree Plaza, and the
Observation Tower at Niagara Falls.
As a longtime supplier member of
the National Association of Elevator
Contractors, Imperial Electric has
grown and thrived along with the U.S
elevator industry. One of the strengths
of Imperial Electric is the team that
represents the company to the industry:
Familiar faces and names like Gary
Ward, Dennis Rhodes, Vineel Mallela,
Jeanette Likens, Shawn Morneweck,
John Marshall, Jennifer Henry, Tony
and Bob Caputo, Dennis Scianni, and
David Molnar. And of course, while
these are the people you may know
as your contact at Imperial – there are
many others operating behind the
scenes to deliver the quality products
and customer service experience you’ve
come to know from Imperial Electric.
Much has changed in the elevator
industry over the past couple of decades,
said Gary Ward, Vice President of Sales
& Marketing. “We have changed with
the times; new products are released
at a record pace – with shorter and
shorter lead times – and a wider range
of products is stocked for faster delivery
from multiple locations. All to service
our customers better.” Ward noted
that Imperial established warehouses
in Los Angeles, Trenton, and Montreal
in addition to its elevator machine
and motor production facilities and
warehouses in Akron and Middleport,
Ohio, with sales offices in Ohio and the
New York Area.
Imperial Electric became a member of
the Kinetek family in 1988 and, in 2012
– along with sister company, Motion
Control Engineering (MCE) – became
part of Nidec Corporation. Nidec is
a nearly $10B (USD) manufacturer of
motors and electric components that
before its acquisition of Kinetek had
limited involvement in the Elevator
market. Now, Nidec is looking to
Imperial, MCE and Kinetek Elevator to
drive growth in the domestic U.S. and
global elevator markets.
