June Program: University Behavioral Health Presentation
Abby Arrellano, Director of Business Development at University Behavioral Health (UBH)
in Denton, will speak at our program meeting Monday, June 1, about the services and programs
UBH provides. She will describe the hospital’s inpatient and outpatient services for children,
adolescents, and adults. She will also explain the Freedom Care Military program that UBH has
implemented.
This presentation will be open to the public and will be held 7:00—8:30 p.m. in room 202
of Crossroads Bible Church at 8101 FM 407 (Justin Road) located near Chinn Chapel Road in
Highland Village and Flower Mound.
First Tuesday Benefit Tuesday, June 2
Fish City Grill of Flower Mound is honoring NAMI Denton County on June 2 at the
restaurant’s First Tuesday Benefit. During the open hours of 11 a.m. till 10
p.m., Fish City Grill will donate 15% of proceeds from customers to NAMI
Denton County, a non-profit organization that provides free educational
classes, programs and support groups for all whose lives have been affected
by mental illness. Join us for some good food and feel good that you are
supporting the local affiliate of the country’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to
improving the lives of those living with mental illnesses and their families and loved ones.

NAMI Denton County Annual Meeting
The Annual Membership Meeting of NAMI Denton
County will be held Monday, June 15, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
in Room 202 of Crossroads Bible Church at 8101 Justin
Road (FM 407).
In addition to presentation of the financial report for
Fiscal Year 2014-2015 and the President’s Report of the
past year’s activities, there will be elections of a Secretary
and two Directors for the affiliate Board of Directors.
Nominations will be accepted from the floor in addition to
the nominations put forth by the Nominating Committee.
The affiliate Bylaws require that nominees be members in
good standing and willing to serve. Members in good
standing are allowed to vote in the elections.
To be in good standing, membership dues must have
been paid up to date by June 5, 2015. If you have recently
been notified that it’s time to renew your membership, you

NAMI Support Groups
The NAMI Family Support Group program is a free, confidential and caring group of families helping
other families who live with mental health challenges. Family members help other family members by
utilizing their collective lived experiences and learned wisdom. This can lead to a renewed sense of hope
for loved ones living with mental health challenges.
The NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is also a free program that offers respect,
understanding, encouragement and hope. These confidential meetings are led by trained facilitators living
in recovery themselves. The meetings are designed to connect, encourage, and support participants using a
structured group model.
Recovery International Support Group Meetings in Denton County
The techniques learned in Recovery International apply to many emotional or behavioral conditions.
Persons struggling with fear, worry, anger, anxiety, mood disorders, fatigue, sleeplessness, stress and other
negative thoughts and feelings may attend either of the two meetings held each week in Denton County. See
the meetings schedule and locations below.
When the weather or other situations interfere with attending a meeting, or someone wants an extra

Legislative Update: Texas Budget
The current Legislative Session ends June 1, but the budget for 2016-17 has been approved by the House
and Senate. Following are some highlights of interest for NAMI.
Behavioral health and substance abuse services will be provided $3.6 billion, including a large increase of
$150.7 million in funding for mental health services (this figure does not include Medicaid mental health
services funding). There will be increased funding for inpatient client services for new contracted community
hospital beds, state hospital information technology improvements, and building repairs and inflation-related
cost increases.
Funding was increased for outpatient services for local mental health authorities, substance abuse
prevention and treatment, transition support for patients moving from hospitals to the community, and
expansion of recovery-focused clubhouses, crisis and suicide prevention services. Additional funding was
included in the budget to support mental health care services and substance abuse treatment for incarcerated
offenders and mental health care services for veterans.

Legislation Status
The current Legislative Session ends June 1. The Governor will have until June 21 to sign or veto any bills that
have been passed by the Legislature. Among the bills concerning mental health issues that have passed this
session are:
 The Texas Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Program, a savings account program for persons with
disabilities
 Program for mental health first aid training for school district employees and school resource officers
 Assistance with student loan repayment for certain mental health professionals
 Instruction regarding mental health, substance abuse and youth suicide added to teacher certification
requirements
 Expanded housing opportunities for persons with disabilities through the homebuyer assistance program
 Inclusion of education about careers in mental health professions for high school students - signed by
Governor, became effective May 23
 CIT training for correctional officers
 Change in driver’s license application: narrows the allowable inquiries regarding an applicant’s history of
mental illness to the sole question as to whether that applicant has a current mental condition that might
adversely affect driving ability
 Direction for state to conduct study on providing care to veterans who have PTSD
NAMI 2015 National Convention, July 6—9, San Francisco
Online registration ends May 31 but pre-convention registration continues until June 15 by calling
(703) 524-7600. After June 15, registration can be done on site at the convention at the Hilton San Francisco
Union Square.
There will be speakers who are national experts in their clinical and research fields, such as Dr. Marsha
Linehan, who developed Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and many other speakers and workshop
leaders who have developed expertise to advance the numerous NAMI educational and support programs
and advocacy issues important to NAMI members and their families and friends.

meeting on July 13 to share information and materials from the national NAMI convention by this year’s
attendees.
Did you know NAMI Denton County was formed in 1988 as Denton County Alliance for the Mentally Ill, before
the national organization began using the name National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)? Later on, the local
affiliate’s name was changed to NAMI Denton County (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

Help for Medicare Beneficiaries and Individuals on Social Security Disability
The North Central Texas Benefits Enrollment Center can help apply for benefits such as Medicare
Savings Programs, extra help with prescriptions, SNAP food assistance, energy assistance, Medicaid
programs and other benefits. This assistance is available to Medicare beneficiaries and individuals on SSDI
who live in Collin, Denton, Ellis, Erath, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Palo Pinto, Parker,
Rockwall, Somervell or Wise counties.
