TheProviderEducationProgramonMentalIllnesswasdesignedandwrittenbyJoyceBurland,Ph.D.,
afamilymember,clinicalpsychologist,andauthoroftheFamily‐to‐FamilyEducationProgram.This
courseisdesignedtoprovideinsightintotheconsumer/familyexperienceindealingwithmentalillness.
FREEforallhealthcareprofessionalsincludingpsychiatrists,psychologists,nurses,casemanagers,
therapists,socialworkers,psychiatrictechnicians,drugandalcoholcounselors,residentialcaregivers,
jobcounselors,receptionists,administrators,andallthosewhoserveindividualswithmentalillness.
TheNAMIProviderEducationProgramisa5‐weekcoursethatpresentsapenetrating,subjective
viewoffamilyandconsumerexperienceswithseriousmentalillnesstostaffatpublicagenciesor
privatepractitioners,whoworkdirectlywithpeoplewithsevereandpersistentmentalillnesses.
Apreviouscourseparticipantwrote,“Anextraordinaryexperience!Theapproachofhavingproviderslearn
fromfamilymembersandthoselivingwithmentalillnessisreallyeye‐opening.Iwilltellmycolleaguesthat
untiltheyattendthiscourse,theydon’thaveaclearandtruepictureofwhatthoselivingwithmentalillness,
theirfamilies,andtheirfriendsendurewhiletheyarebattlingtheirillness.Butafterthecourse,theywill.”
