THE NANTUCKET GARDEN CLUB INC. 2015 PROGRAM OF MEETINGS Program Chair: Mary Ellen Ferrel Nantucket Garden Club meetings will be held in the Large Group Instruction Room (LGI) at Nantucket High School, 10 Surfside Road, from 9:30 A.M. - 11:00 A.M. on the Wednesday mornings listed below unless otherwise indicated. Doors will open at 9:00 A.M. Please enter all dates on your calendar. There will be no further notices. • April 25-26th 41ST ANNUAL DAFFODIL SHOW AND NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL SHOW "Found on Nantucket" The Greenhouse at Bartlett's Ocean View Farm April 24th (Friday) Entries 3 - 6 P.M. April 25th (Saturday) Entries 7 - 9:30 A.M. Judging at 10:00 A.M. Open to the Public 2:00 - 5:00 P.M. April 26th (Sunday) Open to the Public 10:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. • June 24th 1st Regular Meeting PLANT EXCHANGE AND FLOWER ARRANGING Come early and visit with old and new friends beginning at 9 A.M. Refreshments will be served and the boutique will be open. The meeting will begin promptly at 9:30 A.M. and end at 11:30 A.M. The Plant Exchange will be located outside the back door near the cafeteria. Plan to bring your specimens to exchange. Flowers On Chestnut owner/floral designer, Michael Molinar, will give a flower arranging presentation/demonstration sharing many techniques and tricks-of-the-trade that will benefit our July Green Thumb Show arrangers. • July 1st 2nd Regular Meeting HORTICULTURE Pete Smith, Senior Horticulturist at Bartlett Farm, will present a program on natural gardening, emphasizing a decrease in the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers and alternative solutions for our Nantucket gardens. • July 7-8th THE 48TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY GREEN THUMB FLOWER SHOW PREVIEW PARTY, Sconset Casino, 6 - 8 P.M. "Sincerely, 'Sconset - Glimpses from a Summer Village" 'Sconset Casino, 10 New Lane, Siasconset, MA July 6th (Monday) 3 - 5 P.M. Entries accepted and passed July 7th (Tuesday) 8 - 10:30 A.M. Entries accepted and passed July 7th (Tuesday) Judging at 12:00 - 4:00 P.M. July 7th (Tuesday) Green Thumb Flower Show Preview Party, ’Sconset Casino, 6 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. July 8th (Wednesday) 10 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. Green Thumb Flower Show is free of charge and open to the public • July 15th 3rd Regular Meeting BUSINESS MEETING AND LOTTERY LUNCH This meeting will be held to catch up on club business matters, and will be followed by a Lottery Lunch to be held in small groups in members' homes. • July 22nd 4th Regular Meeting GARDEN HISTORY AND DESIGN Stephen Orr is a writer and editor who shares his love of travel, gardening, food and cooking in a range of media, including Conde Nast Traveler, Martha Stewart Living, House & Garden, Domino, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He will discuss herb lore, recipes, uses and history as he shares his newest book, “The New American Herbal”. He will reacquaint us with forgotten herbs and introduce new ones, and talk about why people have brought these amazing plants with them on travels around the world for thousands of years. • July 29th 5th Regular Meeting CONSERVATION Lucy Leske, author of the "Gardening by the Sea" column in The Inquirer and Mirror for the past 25 years, will share her experiences as an avid Nantucket gardener and conservationist in support of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative's efforts to protect the island's native diversity through collaboration, research, monitoring and education. • August 5th 61st Annual House Tour “A DAY ON DARLING” Our 61st House and Garden Tour will be August 5th, 11:00-4:30 P.M on Darling and Farmer Streets. Once again we are in need of hostesses and flower arrangers!! If you can help please contact either Lois Druckmiller to Josette Blackmore. We need everyone’s help to ensure a successful 61st Annual House Tour! • August 10th PROPAGATION WORKSHOP (optional) A professional demonstration of various propagation techniques will be held at Bartlett's Farm. This will be hands-on learning and you will leave with some plants of your own to nurture. LOCATION: Bartlett's Farm Greenhouse @ 10:00 A.M. To sign up, contact Heidi Drew at 508-325-2121. Ice tea will be served. Limited to 30 participants. Sorry, no guests. • August 19th 6th Regular Meeting ANNUAL MEETING The Nantucket Hotel, 77 Easton Street, 10 A.M. The Annual Meeting will include the State of the Club, NGC budget report, presentation of awards, and Nominating Committee report. We will also welcome the Provisional Class of 2016. PLEASE NOTE Two or more unexcused absences from Regular Meetings in any year will result in membership forfeiture. Regular Meetings are designated in the Program. Guests are welcome at all meetings except Annual Meeting. Excuses should be sent by mail or email to the Corresponding Secretary, Debbie Thomas. [email protected] REMINDER “Monday Mornings” Our volunteer gardening project continues at Hadwen Garden. Located on Main Street, NGC members tend the Garden every Monday during the season from 7:30 - 8:45 A.M. Every member is expected to volunteer at least once during the summer. Provisional Members are required to volunteer every Monday during the season. Contact Donna Hamel for details. [email protected] BOARD MEETINGS Board Meetings will be held at 9:00 - 11:00 A.M. on the following Mondays: June 22nd July 20th August 17th DUES COLLECTION Membership dues for the fiscal year September 2015 - August 2016 will be collected by the Assistant Treasurer, Maryann Wasik, [email protected] at the weekly meetings beginning July 1st. Dues should be paid by the Annual Meeting. If payment is not made by October 1st, a late fee of $50.00 will be added to the bill. Nonpayment of annual dues by December 31, 2015 may result in membership forfeiture.
