Ferns in Simpson Park BY KATHRINA SAAVEDRA AND DENNIS CARSI Ctenitis Sloanei Ctenitis Sloanei - NATIVE (ONLY TREE FERN NATIVE TO CONTINENTAL U.S.) - ENDANGERED - INHABITS TROPICAL HAMMOCKS - GROWS IN MOIST LIMESTONE SOIL Thelypteris Reptans - Native - Endangered - Grows on limestone - Can grow in nutrient-poor soil Phlebodium aureum - Native - Secured - Grows in leaf litter of moist forests and swamps - Grows gold-colored spores - Grows near saltwater, but is protected from direct salt blasts by other local plants - Has somewhat higher drought tolerance - Can grow in varying levels of shade or in full sunlight Adiantum tenerum - Native - Endangered - Very rare, local throughout range - Has thin stems and branches and small, delicate leaflets - Can grow with or without an accumulation of humusy material - Specific to requirement of light shade
