CIDCO all prepared to
carry out demolition
drive as per HC orders

NAVI MUMBAI: The
City and Industrial Development Corporation
is armed with the High
Court orders to act
against the illegal constructions across Navi
Mumbai. This will
have little impact even
if the political parties
oppose the same. The
ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv
Sena will not be able to
hamper the process considering that the court
has already issued an
order.
The CIDCO VC &
MD Sanjay Bhatia had
cited that the HC would
not be lenient even if
the political commotion
and chaos continues.
The CIDCO will undertake a demolition
drive in 15 villages.
Now that the election is
over and the Nationalist Congress Party
though ruling in the
city is opposed to the
demolition, it will have
little impact. The BJP
after the political rout
will go slow and the
Shiv Sena may pitch in
but it will have
little impact.
The political
parties at this
point of time
have nothing
to lose.
There is no
any kind of
election approaching and
hence they
may oppose openly but
may not resort to stringent opposition to the
CIDCO action. There is
a chance that the BJP
will resort to its extra
FSI stance which was
granted at 4 level. This
gives it the political
benefit and will also
help the rural people to
get their construction
done by using the extra
FSI that is granted.
It can be noted that
the government notification was issued in
2014 by the state government for complete
development of the villages besides looking in
to the villagers’ demand for regularization
of illegal houses constructed based on their
requirement. The CIDCO says that all the
1657 illegal houses
were constructed after
1 January 2013. Out of
the same, 1021 such illegal constructions are
within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction,

Autos in waiting list
to get permits soon

VASHI: The Deputy
Regional Transport office has received instruction from the state
transport authority to
issue permits for those
auto rickshaw in the
waiting list
of the last
year online
lottery
draw.
In Navi
Mumbai,
the Vashi
RTO was
allocated a
total of 2687
new auto
rickshaw
permits for
which applications
were invited online. Of
this 2019 applicants
who won during the lottery draw held on Feb
26 were given permits.
However, from the remaining 668 applicants
around 319 were rejected because they failed
to provide requisite documents and 349 applicants did not come forward to submit their
documents before
March 31 which was
the extended deadline
for the same.
“We had already issued permits to 2019
applicants last year.
Showcase notice was issued to 500 applicants
for failure in providing
necessary and correct
information. Of this
we got a few
more corrected applications
till March
31 but the
rest of the
319 applicants failed
to do so.
However
since we did
not get any
orders from
the senior officials we
could not issue the vacant permits to those in
the waiting list,” said
Sanjay Dhaygude, deputy RTO in Vashi.
The officials said
that those in the waiting list are now requested to come to the
RTO office with all the
required set of documents from May 18 to

KHARGHAR: It was
impossible to contact
MSEDC employees at
the hour of need, when
Vighbahar Complex
and Kalnal bank in the
vicinity of Sector 12
of Kharghar spent
total 18 hours without any electricity
on Wednesday.
The problem
which has caused
due to a short circuit burning down
five to six cables of
electricity on Wednesday at 1pm at night had
caused the Kharghar
residents of sec 12 to
spent whole night and
the consecutive day till
7pm in darkness. Due
to the absence of power, it was impossible to
operate pumps used for
water supply; therefore
the residents had to
spend 18 hours without
any power or water. At
this crucial hour,
though MSEDC office
employees were not to
be found to attend the
calls of harassed citizens. Interestingly, the
phones at the MSEDC
are said to be not working past 15 days to avoid
taking calls of frustrated citizens.
On the other hand,
MSEDC Deputy Engineer S.M Vesave responded that it was
impossible to get workers during night and as
the intensity of destruction done by fire was
more than anticipated,
it took long hours to
mend the damage. He
assured that the matter of telephone lines
will also be looked into.

RTO targets rikshaws
without permit
Catches 43 of them without license

NERUL: The RTO
personnel conducted a
two day campaign and
caught 43 auto rikshaws operating illegally.
The campaign was
conducted in Nerul Seawood area on 9 and 10
May, 2015. During the
intensive check, they
found 43 rikshaws operating without permits or expired ones.
“All the vehicles have
been confiscated,” says
a release from the office
of Deputy RTO, Vashi.
Twenty seven of them
possessed private vehicle permits but actually used them for carrying passengers as public vehicles.
The campaign was
conducted by Inspector

Rajesh Kesarkar, Kiran Tiwari, Nilesh
Dhote and Ashwini
Khot and was overseen
by Deputy RTO Sanjay
Dhaigude and Assistant
Transport Officer Dnyaneshwar Modak.
Our reporter adds:

conducted periodically for the sake
the completing
the targets given
to each official
but the latter are
not serious. The
vehicles are confiscated on paper
only. The next
day, the rikshaw
operator approaches the
official and gets the vehicle released on the
payment of some money.
Operating rikshaws
without permits is very
common in Navi Mumbai. A rikshaw may be
caught in say, Vashi.
Next day, after it is released by the official, it
is operated in Koperkhairane or Airoli.
“Detecting such cases is
difficult, especially
when the officials are
not serious about it,”
the reporter adds.
Police raid shop selling banned

Traffic police conduct
campaign against
drunk driving

PANVEL: The traffic
police of Zone-2 conducted a campaign
against drunk driving
and caught 13
motorists driving under the
influence of liquor on 13
May, 2015.
Five officers
and 25 constables took part
in the campaign.
In all, thirteen motorists were caught
driving under the influence of liquor. The fig-
ure included nine fourwheelers and four twowheelers, says a press
release by the department.
“We will continue to
conduct such campaigns from time to
time,” says DCP (Traffic) Arvind Salve in a
release.

KALAMBOLI: A man, after withdrawing cash from
HDFC Bank branch of Kalamboli was robbed of
cash worth Rs5, 00, 000 while he was heading to
office on Tuesday. The victim, Thomas Konpali Tambi resides in Kalamboli and was retuning from
HDFC bank after withdrawing cash from the office’s account. He was on his way to work, when a
speeding motorcycle riding duo snatched away his
bag before fleeing. The man tried to raise alarm,
but the duo had already escaped. Accordingly, Thomas has lodged a complaint against the robbers
with Kalamboli Police.

India Football Association (WIFA) organised
and conducted the AIFF
Grassroots Courses in
five centres across Maharashtra including
Mumbai’s Cooperage
ground and Sri Ma
Vidyalaya in Thane on
the occasion of AFC
‘Grassroots Day’ on Friday.
AIFF General Secretary, Kushal Das, who
inaugurated the programme congratulated
WIFA and expressed encouragement to the participants. “Maharash-
tra is one state that always encourages football at the grassroots.
Last year they won the
AIFF Grassroots award
and they are continuing
to conduct such programmes, which will
help take the sport in
the country to higher
levels,” he said after the
inauguration. Through
this programme, WIFA
is expected to add another 150 Grassroots Leaders in the state. With
the new additions, Maharashtra will boast of
having over 350 Grassroots Leaders.
Besides this course
at five centres, WIFA
Grassroots Leaders will
also be celebrating festivals in as many as 50
centres in the State. “In
the months to come,
WIFA will have many
more such courses
spreading grassroots
leaders across the state.
This course was conducted to celebrate the
AFC Grassroots Day,”

future. The project intends to respond to the
recreational needs of
the Navi Mumbai populace. The project is
blend of Landscape and
Urban Design. The
park is intended to provide an excellent place
for active and passive
recreation.
This picturesque
setting is ideal for a
city level park of international level. It accommodates diverse
functions of active and
passive recreations
starting from Jogger’s
Tracks, Botanical Gardens, Amphitheatre
and Theme Parks to a
full fledged Sports Stadium. Thus, the satellite city has a clean and
green look, thanks to
the many parks within the city.
Now it is time to
have proper maintenance of these parks to
give a green look all
the time. These beautiful parks are neglected during the monsoon
season and that spoils

should join hands and

with regular maintenance and see that dogs
are not allowed to enter these parks and
spoil the gardens and
scare the children coming there during the
summer vacation.

thereby defeating the

Why high rises?
The death of three fire officers – a fourth
one is fighting for life – in the Kalbadevi building fire has raised issues concerning our fire
safety measures. There are people who raise
questions like why so many senior officers
should enter a building under fire. They would
like that job to be left to junior staffers. But
such debates imply that the lives of junior men
are less valuable than those of senior officers. Such people draw parallels with the war
front where it is an established practice to send
young jawans or the ordinary soldiers to face
the line of fire while the senior offers stand
behind to oversee the strategy. Whether strategy is less important in a fire fighting operation can be debated. Let those issues as they
are. Presently, our focus should be to tackle
the issue of our preparedness to face fires in
high rises.
First, in any fire fighting operation, ready
availability of water is very vital. The survey
conducted a few years ago showed that most
of the fire (or water) hydrants in our high rise
buildings are no more than show pieces. A vast
majority of them were found to be non-functional! BMC promptly issued notices to private societies where such lacunae was noticed.
But we were not told what action was taken
against public buildings where a similar situation prevailes. At the other end, we don’t
know how well maintained the fire brigade’s
equipments are. The government’s answer to
these issues has been to order the establishment of a new burns center in the J J Hospital complex. While an additional facility is
welcome, that cannot be a solution to the lack
of preparedness. The burns hospital comes
into the picture only after a fireman or a resident has sustained burns. Instead, we must
be thinking in terms of preventing such situations or minimizing their impact. There are
also complaints of lack of periodical training
to fire men and up-gradation of their skills!
Their physical fitness is another issue. The
problem is multifarious.
The solution, in our opinion, lies elsewhere.
First and foremost, we must restrict the maximum height of buildings. That is essential
for two reasons. High rises put too much pressure on our power as well as water supply services. As it is we are struggling to meet the
demand for power from the domestic and industrial sectors. Every new high rise building
is bound to increase this short fall. We are
saying this when China has started building
the world’s tallest building – 209 storeys high!
May be they have assessed the possible problems and taken appropriate measures to face
them. But our system is far from ready to
face such problems. The easy way out for us
is to avoid such giant constructions. May be,
we restrict the height to 40 storeys or so.

celebrated Ambedkar’s 124th Jayanti
at CIDCO Bhavan recently. Village residents who had decided to eschew ostentation and excessive spending during marriage ceremonies were felicitated on the occasion. Sarpanches of
Vahal, Koperkhairane, Jasai and Kopragaon were present on the occasion.
The function was held under the joint
auspices of CIDCO employees’ Union
and Backward Class Employees Union.

Incomplete Turbhe skywalk
The skywalk on Sion-Panvel highway is incomplete. The skywalk stops in the middle of the highway, where the Turbhe flyover ends. The skywalk
was meant to connect Sanpada village with Turbhe MIDC. Pedestrians take the risk of crossing the busy highway. Many
accidents have occurred at this junction. The skywalk is left incomplete
due to the presence of overhead high tension line which needs to be removed. Pedestrians are suffering for the last two years, but there has
been no progress in the work. The authorities should take it as a priority
and finish the work for the safety of pedestrians.

Changing equations with China
India and China vowed to seek a “political” solution to the boundary
issue and proactively resolve it as early as possible amid Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s emphasis that the dispute should not prevent progress
in ties, which have been “complex” in the recent decades. Indian Prime
Minister requested China to reconsider its approach on some matters,
like visa policy towards residents of Arunachal Pradesh, as he asserted
that the two nations have a historic responsibility to turn the relationship into a source of strength for each other and a force of good for the
world and not treat other as enemies.
During their talks in Beijing, Mr. Modi and his Chinese counterpart
Li Keqiang decided to increase the number of border meeting points of
their military personnel from the existing four, as they underlined that
maintenance of peace and tranquility on the border was an important
guarantor for the development and continued growth of ties. Better council prevailed between the two countries to have peaceful neighbourly relationship after consistent chaos in the border issue all these years, which
caused friction between two countries and continuous friction in sensitive
areas on the Indian side of border.
The equations between two developing countries are slowly changing
to promote healthy relations in the days to come.

Panvel ST Depot’s shelter
constructed but potholes
not filled yet

PANVEL: The
preparation for the
monsoon season
seems to be not taken
seriously by the
MSRTC officials for
the Panvel ST Depot.
They recently completed constructing a
big shelter by making
the roof but have not
done the work of
filling the potholes.
The Panvel ST
depot’s new shelter is
been found better
than those of other
areas. However, the
dilapidated old
building which helps
the passengers to
wait at the different
bus parking numbers
is not demolished or
repaired. This building is not in a position
to be repaired. There
will be monsoon
within a month but
the Panvel ST depot
officials are still
occupying the dangerous building.
The building is also
housing an enquiry
counter, besides stalls,
etc. However, the ST
depot officials are not
taking any action
along this direction.
Within a month the
monsoon will hit the
city but a disaster is
looming over the life of
many. There is a
demand from many
people to shift the
enquiry counter and
other offices from the
dilapidated building
to the new shelter
which has roof.
The commuters
demand that the ST
officials should
immediately undertake the repairing
work of the potholes
and also clear the
sewage line dug up
sometime back. There
is also demand that
adequate shelter for
the commuters be
made so that people
do not face the
inconvenience. There
is little time left for
the officials and they
need to act as quickly
as possible.

to the place and surveyed the progress in
the work. He expressed dissatisfaction at the slow pace
of work.
“The memorial has
been under construction for over five years
but nowhere near
completion. It suggests
the lethargy and lack of
interest on the part of
the ruling party as well
as the administration,”
he said.
He threatened to
launch an agitation if
the memorial is not
completed before 6 December, the death anniversary of Dr Ambedkar. “Shiv Sainiks will
