yet another Gambling den

again successfully led
his team to raid a gambling den in Turbhe.
The team has been responsible for breaking
11 similar illegal places in past one month.
The police had been
informed about a club
called “Anuja Welfare
Club” which was being
used for illegal gambling activities. The
club is owned by accused Mangesh Patil,
who along with other
65 ‘players’ was arrested in the raid. They
were found to be playing Casino games like
‘Teen Patti’ and ‘Rummy’ with plastic coins
at the time. The Police, however found
cash Rs 1 lakh in total
in possession of the people engaged in gam-
bling. Nevertheless,
none of gamblers were
legitimate members of

PI Chandrakant Kaatkar, API Rohan Bagade, Hawaldar Santosh Shinde and Ramchandra Pole and their
team were the ones
that carried out the
raids and advised citizens to inform the police of any similar illegal activities in their
neighborhood.

has reduced considerably as compared to
the past. The credit

Mumbai Municipal

carrying out frequent fumigation, awareness
campaigns of the
disease

service.
To reduce the
number of cases
of malaria still
further, the authorities of Sterling Wockhardt Hospital are considering
making use of new
anti-malarial drug
which is used in some
foreign countries.
The
campaign
against malaria has
proved to be a huge
success since more and
more people are becoming aware about
the disease and how to
combat in on time.

facility service buses

relief for those affected

accidents.

Casualty” buses were introduced by Guardian

Sand Mafia is become active
again in Navi Mumbai

NAVI MUMBAI: Sand
mafia is in the news
again. Environmentalist and activists have
raised their voices
again to protest the illegal sand mining
along the coast of
Kharghar, near Morbi
village. They are also
complaining about the
gunny bags and machines to perform their
act of extracting the
sand and transporting
them to the chosen
place. The authorities
are informed about the
same and they are trying their best to stop
such illegal activities
and nab the culprits.
Some activists have
money in this sand mining business that many
youngsters are indulging in this criminal
business without caring about the risk factor that is involved in
pursuing this business.
There has been a continuous tussle between
illegal sand miners on
one side and the police
large scale destruction
of mangroves that is
taking place owing to
the debris being
dumped in the coastal
region.
“If sand mining is
allowed to continue in
this manner then
Kharghar one day will
lose its greenery entirely,” said an environmentalist.
The sand miners use
urged the local authorities to take the help of
State Government and
if necessary even the
Central Government to
stop illegal sand mining in such a large
scale. They also condemned the assaulting
of government officers
in the past who tried to
prevent the illegal sand
mining.
There is so much

Don’t treat juveniles like adults
Attempt is being made to ensure that children between the ages of 16 and 18 are tried as adults if they
commit heinous offences such as murder and rape.
The rights of the juvenile should be protected. It
should not be forgotten that making children face an
adult criminal court would mar the prospect of their
rehabilitation. The government should stick by the
U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which
treats everyone up to 18 as a child.
There was a time were in child at age of 16 didn’t
even know what sex and rape was? These days, one
can get the knowledge from different sources. Giving
knowledge about sex and other topics is good, but
half knowledge about anything can always increase the
curiosity, especially in teenagers, which leads to such
kinds of crime.
If we go by data then less than 1% instances of
heinous crime involves juveniles. So, rehabilitation
homes and counseling of these juveniles would be a
good option rather than treating them on same lines
with adults (who are major heinous crime offenders).
No doubt culprit should be punished. But at the
age of 16 or 18 they know little and try to follow heroic nonsense. The impact of cinemas and internet is
higher. Under these influences they try to tease or
show much interest in physical pleasure. They give
lesser importance to morals. They don’t know what is
good or bad. So it is better that the government provide more facilities to provide quality education, with
religious morals. Teach these children to respect women. Protect the children upto 18 years of age.
“Law is reason free from passion.” People seem to
be getting carried away by their feelings of disgust at
certain crimes and want the law to reflect their feelings. Laws should be based on reason and there are
several scientific studies which state that children
between the ages of 16 and 18 are not fully capable of
understanding the consequences or risks of their actions.
If children below 18 are sent to jail instead of Reformatory Centre, it will be bad for those children. In
India everyone who goes into a jail comes out trained
and turned into a hard core criminal seeking vengeance on the society. Many high level criminals run
their operations from prison with help of officials and
politicians. We must focus on these things - not tamper
with a more humane brand new law that has undergone little implementation. This is a knee jerk reaction.
Childrens upto the age of 18 is at their pre-age of
growth. The present law made should take care that
at what circumstance the criminal act was performed.
Having a rule to force juveniles to be treated as adults
is wrong. If this is done, then a day is nearer when
political effects will force below 18 to vote for them.
There is an age where we come across society and try
to judge good and bad; if while judging, one commits
the wrong act one should not be penalized but should
be kept under supervision of good charters and taught
what was wrong in the act. Children are future and
must be taught in perfect manner, only law driven punishments are not solutions to stop the act.

Malaria has confounded some of the
best minds of this century. A hundred
years after the discovery that mosquitoes
transmit malaria, we still do not know
enough about the disease to defeat it permanently. But we do have the tools to limit
its spread and dramatically reduce the
rate at which children are dying. Our
goals should be to reduce childhood mortality from malaria by at least one fourth
before the turn of the century, by half in
its first decade, and by more than 90 percent in its second decade. By reexamining both the successes and the failures of
the past, we can develop a more effective,
comprehensive public health strategy to
contain and control this lethal opponent.”

Malaria is a leading cause of death
among the world’s children. More than
2.5 million die of malaria each year, most
of them in Africa. And those who survive

anemia and immune suppression that
leaves them vulnerable to other fatal illnesses.
Among adults living in areas of high
transmission, malaria is best thought of
as a chronic, debilitating illness that robs
its victims of years of productivity. A single mosquito bite can transmit one of the
four parasites that cause malaria, setting
in motion bouts of fever, chills, and nausea that can recur for weeks. And in some
areas, people receive as many as 300 infective bites per year. According to a 1993
World Bank report, malaria represents a
global public health burden second only

Save mangroves
It is very shocking to learn that an ecological disaster is awaiting in
Mumbai due to large scale destruction of Mangroves. In the past decade
alone, around 10000 hectares of mangroves are estimated to have been
systematically destroyed along the Mumbai coast.
The city is slowly
paying the price be it in
the form of rise in atmospheric pollution or severe water logging or
floods.
Mangroves which
are traditionally considered as waste marshlands are in fact productive coastal wetlands
that have been exploited by man for years.
We witness a unique natural phenomenon - an entire fauna growing
in saline water. In Mumbai the virgin mangroves forests at Vikroli occupying an area of 1750 acres is the second green lung of that city after
Borivli National Park.
Mangroves have played an important role in preventing coastal erosion by acting as buffers between land and the sea, beside they are also an
unique eco system creating good breeding condition for fish and other
aquatic organisms. If the mangroves destruction is going on at this rate,
all the city’s mangroves will vanish within a short span of time.
To save the city’s precious mangroves, widespread awareness is required and the involvement of people in the campaigns to protect them
from further destruction is essential.
Mumbaikars should realize that protecting mangroves is like protecting your own lives.

Fortis Vashi Initiates Support Group Event For TKR

Around 50 patients who
had undergone Total
Knee Replacement
(TKR) surgeries at Fortis Hospital Vashi accompanied by their
family members actively participated in various fun filled activities
to spread awareness
and dispel fears among
the masses related to
such surgeries at Four
Points in Vashi early
this week.
The event which
was one of the initiatives of the Fortis TKR
Support Group was conducted successfully under the guidance of
Dr.Siddhart Yadav, Orthopaedic Surgeon of
the hospital.
At the event, the expatients who underwent TKR at Fortis
Vashi in the last few
years interacted with
the doctors and with
each other, sharing
their experiences. Some
of the patients, who
were bed-ridden for
months and years,
shared with the group
that they were now able
to move independently
on their own without
any major pain. Many
participants said they
would like to share
their experience with
the other patients who
are sceptical about going for TKR surgeries
to others who are hesitant to undergo Total

TKR surgery.”
Referring to the
case of 86 year old pa-
tients he further added
“One of the oldest patients Sunderben Chedda from Kharghar currently 86 years old in
fact was bed ridden
when she came for surgery due to severe arthritis in both the
knees four year back.
After the operations at
the prime age of 82 she
is back on her feet and
going about doing her
normal tasks independently with confidence”.

The knee is the
largest joint in the human body and having
healthy knees is required to perform most
everyday activities. If a
person’s knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be
difficult for him/her to
perform simple activities, such as walking or
a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery is
