Happy School Feast Day
This afternoon we celebrated the school feast day with a joyful thanksgiving Mass in the school
hall. The children gathered together to reflect upon our special school community and the example
that St. Joseph has shown us to work hard and look after one another. After Mass the children
were given an ice-lolly and many had extra play time.
Thank you to Father Allen and all the staff who worked so hard to make the day so special.

On Wednesday morning, the Student Council hosted the Bike
It Breakfast in the main hall for all the children and parents
who cycle to school. Members of the School Council had to
come in really early, at 8am, to help set up the chairs and
tables, and to make sure all the food was ready. When the
pupils and parents came into the hall they were given a
yummy breakfast. We had croissants, juice and fruit; we even
had some pain au chocolat! Lots of pupils and their parents
came, and the breakfast was a great success.
We’d also like to say thanks to Mrs. Husain for helping us to
organise everything and to everyone who scooted or ‘biked’ to
school and took part in the breakfast. We are now looking
forward to having a ‘Bike-It’ Breakfast each term.

Nursery
FS1 have become Alphabet Adventurers this week
exploring a new letter sound every day. We are already
recognising our own initial capital letters - we call it the
picture of the sound - and we have made crowns to wear
on our heads when it is our special day!
Next week we will focus on Ff, Gg, Hh and Ii.

Reception
The children were introduced to a teacher called
Miss Maget, who came to visit our school from
her school in Gambia. The children listened with
excitement as she described her school and her
tribe back home. She showed them
photographs and real artefacts the children
asked questions about what life was like there.
The children also recalled that Miss Kasia went
to Gambia last year.
Year 2
The Wright Brothers designed and built the first
real aeroplane in 1903. This week in Year 2
we have be thinking about our own inventions.
I am an inventor and I would like to invent a
balloon jetpack. It is made from rubber. It is a
good idea because it makes you fly. (Cosimo)
I would like to invent an electric pencil because
it will do all your writing. (Mateo)
I would like to invent a rubber tie. You can
wear it to school. It will never tear and you will
never have to wash it. (Riley)
I would like to invent an “Air Vest”. Is also made
from rubber. When you are drowning it inflates
and lifts you up to safety. It works because
there is some air inside. It is a good idea
because it will save you. (James D.)
Year 1
This week we became Balarama, an Indian
Parade Elephant. We experienced the sights,
sounds, and emotions of the Dasara Parade.
One group worked together to find an
impressive 24 adjectives to describe the setting!
In R.E we have learnt how the disciples were
baptised through the Holy Spirit. We made our
own tongues of fire to remind us of the way in
which this happened. There are also small signs
of life are emerging in our indoor garden!

Year 3
This week in Year Three, we started a science
investigation. We are going to find out what
happens when we remove the leaves from a
plant and compare it to leaving some and all of
the leaves on a plant. We want to find out how
this will affect the plant and are going to observe
the plants regularly to notice changes. We
predict the plant without any leaves will be our
first causality!

Extra! Extra! Read All About it! Year 4
became a busy newsroom this week.
Skilfully, we raced against time to
report the escape of a lion from West
Midlands Safari Park. It didn’t end
well for some eyewitnesses. We
manage to ‘put the story to bed’
before the paper went to press, and
were pleased with our combined
efforts. This morning it was business
as usual, busily reporting overnight
events.
This week we have been writing
Tudor Diaries imagining that we
actually worked at Henry VIII’s
court. Some of us came up with
very interesting jobs. We also
started work on our Tudor
Portraits, had fun with
percentages in Maths and
thought of the gifts which we
have received from the Holy
Spirit.
Year 6
It has been another busy week in Year 6. We have been revising for our upcoming SATs , and
making sure we will be in tip-top shape for the exams when they roll around in just over 10
days! However, our preparation was disturbed this week, as Year 6 were the recipients of some
unwelcome mail: a mysterious box was sent to the school, and whatever was inside didn't want
to be disturbed...

Scarlett Fever
We have had several cases of Scarlett Fever in our Early Years classes this week. Although the
Health Authority has not issued any information at the moment, we want to make parents aware of
the symptoms so that they can take their children to the doctors to obtain antibiotics if necessary.
The symptoms parents need to look for include: a sore throat, headache, high temperature
(38.3C/101F) or above), flushed face and swollen tongue. The distinctive pink-red rash develops 12
to 48 hours later. We wish the children who are unwell a speedy recovery.
Nepal Cake Sale
On Friday the 8th of May, St Joseph’s are having a cake sale to raise money for the work CAFOD is
carrying out following the earthquake in Nepal. Please bring in some cupcakes, cakes, buns or
anything sweet and suitable to have at break and after school. The cakes will be found in either the
playground or in the hall. The prices for the cakes will be: 20p, 50p or £1.

Walk to School Week
May is National Walking Month, and the Student Council is pleased to announce that we will be
taking part in Walk to School Week from 18th-22nd of May. We want to encourage as many people as
we can to walk to school, because it keeps you fit and healthy.
To show people how fun walking to school is, we are going to be taking part in a competition called
Walk Westminster!
All you need to do is take a picture of your favourite place you pass on your walk to school. It could
be the school gates, or even the roundabout! When you take the photo, write a short description
about it and take it into your teacher. All the entries will then be sent to Westminster Road Safety,
who will select a winner from our school after half term. There will be a special prize for the winner,
so get your camera out!
P.S. Even if you don’t normally walk to school, ask your parents to park a little further away from the
school than normal so you can at least walk a little bit and take part in the competition!

Royal Albert Hall Kooza
Project Presentation Day
2015
On Friday 24th of April, six children from Year 6 were
delighted to be invited to the Evolution Kooza project
presentation day at the Royal Albert Hall. With excitement
in the air, we walked through the doors carrying our
precious projects and were met by the doorman who led us
into the Elgar Room where the presentation took place. We
were welcomed by another fifteen schools from the Triborough including St. Edward’s and St. Vincent’s who had
worked just as hard as us. They each talked enthusiastically
about their models and inspiration. Our inspiration (like
many others) was the Kooza Cirque Du Soliel which the
whole class saw earlier in the year (also at the Royal Albert
Hall).
After we had all viewed each school’s projects, the Rolls
Royce engineers who had helped us start our projects stood
at the front of the room, took the microphone and began
giving feedback. They complemented each of us for our
unique take on the brief and variety of mechanisms
employed. They told us a little bit about each school’s
journey through the project and steps to consider for the
future; it was a great day out!

Walk a Thon Friday 22 May: Pledge Drive Launches Next Week!
The pledge drive will start on Thursday 7 May, which will give the children 2 full weeks to
collect pledges. We are using VirginGiving again this year, which is organized by class
(easier for donors), but the children are still competing by house. Further information will be
forwarded to you through your CVCs.
The children did an amazing job creating logos/images for the Walkathon – Thank you! You
will be seeing the official 2015 Logo next week when you receive your pledge forms. You

We are also going to be asking each class if they are able donate specific items for the
children’s party bags (water, sweeties, etc.). Requests for each class will go out to you next
