Captivating Gozo!
Small and beautiful as it is, Gozo cannot be seen in just one day.
As a place to relax, ‘hang out’ and live the good life the island
is unsurpassed. After you set foot on Gozo, you’ll know why
you need more than just a day to savour it’s leisurely charms.
The more you enjoy your visit to Gozo, the more likely you
are to return, and to recommend the island to others.
If you are intrigued by this beautiful island’s ability to
create ‘Gozo fanatics’ like ourselves, then plan a visit.
We always stay for more than just a day. It’s the secret
hideaway of all Maltese. Which is why we would prefer
to leave it undiscovered by you. But it’s in our nature to
share the best we have with visitors.

The Saluting Battery,
Valletta
Sited at Valletta’s best vantage
point under the Upper Barracca
Gardens and overlooking the
Grand Harbour, the Saluting
Battery is still equipped with
original cannon. In the past, it
served both to defend the harbour and as an official ceremonial platform from where gun
salutes would be fired to honour
visiting dignitaries or vessels to
Malta. For hundreds of years, it
also doubled as the official public
time marker from where a gun
was fired at sunrise, noon and
sunset to provide the public with
the exact hour of the day. The
first and last soundings indicated
the time when all town gates
where to be opened or closed.
The noon-day round was meant
for mariners to calibrate their
timepieces on board for navigational reasons. After all these centuries, the old tradition of firing a
gun at noon (12pm) still takes
place here daily. Guided tours of
the battery are offered before
and after the display at 11am and
12.30pm. Open: Daily 10am and
1.30pm. Free transport from this
site to the Malta at War Museum
and Fort Rinella leaves daily at
12.15 and 1.15pm.
Fort Rinella, Kalkara
Fort Rinella is Malta’s only historic live-museum. It is a unique
example of late 19th century
military engineering in being
built as a steam-powered
mechanical war machine to
house and power the world’s
largest gun ever made – the
Armstrong 100-ton gun. This gun still survives in this fort. In its
time, it could fire a one-ton shell up to a distance of 8-miles at
which range it could pierce 21inches of ship armour.
This fort has been painstakingly restored by volunteers back to
its original state. A historical re-enactment takes place here daily
at 2.30pm recreating aspects of the daily life of the Victorian garrison. This includes live cannon and musket firing. A brand new
audiovisual is also available which outlines the colourful history of
the fort and its monstrous gun. Open: Daily between 10.00am
and 5.00pm. Guided tours and film shows are offered on the
hour till 1.00pm after which there will be the historical re-enactment. Directions: Bus No.4 to Kalkara from Valletta bus station or
follow signs to Three Cities and local signs to fort.

Malta. This Museum also comprises a wartime movie produced in
1942 by the Crown Film Unit on
the express wish of H.M. King
George VI to document the heroic stand of the Maltese during the
conflict. Length of film is 20mins.

Evolution of Form
Herman Ciappara will be
exhibiting a collection of figurative sculptures that he has
been working on during the
last few years. The human
form has become the prominent theme that drives his
works and although his sculptures have varied greatly, this
exhibition will focus entirely
on contemporary works. This
collection embodies the evolution of Herman’s style as he
explores the classical human
form and transforms it into
more stylised and abstract
shapes. Herman is inspired
from everyday life, from
watching people around him
and the way they interact with
each other. However, he is
mostly inspired from watching
dancers performing

Malta: Bays and Harbours
An exhibition of watercolour paintings by Joe Pace Ross.
The artist’s preferred medium is transparent watercolours,
which lend themselves beautifully to depicting the azure
waters and honey coloured bastion walls rising from the
harbours of Malta. The local Luzzu, so common in Maltese
fishing villages, also figures well in Joe Pace Ross’s paintings.
The vivid luzzu colours, which have become typical of and
exclusive to Malta and Gozo, are excellently reflected in
clear translucent seas. Galleys, vessels, warships and boats in
general - both old and modern - are also a favourite subject of the artist who portrays faithfully these frequent visitors to our Island.

Consapevolezza
C.S.Lawrence could be pigeon-holed as a portrait artist but that
would be short-changing her. Her subject matter ranges from
her portraits, for which she has become renowned, to landscapes and figurative compositions. Although her work is immediately identifiable, it is a challenge to define the style that marks
her art. Style becomes secondary to innovative exploration as
she constantly pushes the envelope of her creative boundaries.
Whatever the outcome, the sincerity and intensity of this artist’s
personal self-expression and journey of discovery through the
medium of art is unmistakable.

A Diary of Obsessions
John Busuttil Leaver is
exhibiting 22 works planned
and painted over a period
ranging from 3 to 10 years.
Some of these paintings refer
to feminility but without
using the nude. Others
express disappointment with
over urbanization, and some
use the tree as a symbol of
harmony and wisdom “lost”.
Other obsessive themes are
the bastions, cliffs and
Yungian archetypes such as

He then moved on to largescale monochrome paintings

Voices - Tell Me Why
VOICES was originally set up in 1991 by the late Louis Naudi,
together with Adrian Mamo, Tony Vella and Sue Weenink. They
organised a musical event that allowed young people to express
their musical talents in a positive way, to celebrate the beauty of
life and give joy to others with a spirit of altruism. Since then,Voices
has continued to grow in popularity and success but has always
kept this underlying ‘spirit of Voices’ very much alive. Everyone
involved, from the choir members, to the band, back stage, front of
house, as well as the committee, participate purely on a voluntary
basis. The concerts are held every two years with the aim of raising funds which are then distributed to a number of charitable
institutions. Tell Me Why is the title of this year’s edition – why the
poverty, why the violence, why the drugs, why the ignorance. This
year, the committee has decided that 50% of the funds collected
will be dedicated to a major project, which aims to emphasise and
reinforce the possibility of a positive approach to a more ‘healthy’
lifestyle, using music and arts as a focal point.

by Marzio Giossi (Marcello - painter), Romano Franceschetto
(Schaunard – musician) and Noel Galea (Colline – philosopher).

dynamic and demanding role of Musetta. This international cast

Upper and Lower
Barrakka Gardens
Two gardens, facing the
Grand Harbour in Valletta,
both offering a panoramic
view. The Upper Barrakka
Gardens offer the best
view since they’re more
centered and at a much
higher level. It was the gift
of an eighteenth-century
knight. The Anglican
Garrison Church par tly
intrudes upon it. The garden is built on top of a
demi-bastion. The Lower
Barrakka Gardens are
part of St Christopher’s
Bastion and have a view of
the harbour. At their center is a small Greek-style
folly built in memory of
Governor Sir Alexander
Ball, who led the siege
against the French in 1800
and subsequently became
Britain’s first civil commissioner of Malta. The
French during the 17981800 siege cultivated
these gardens.
Argotti Botanical
Gardens
In 1805 the British governor appointed a Carmelite
friar, Malta’s first professor
of natural history. He
assembled the plants in
Floriana’s Mall and 50
years later they were
moved to the site of the
present Argotti Gardens,
then the preserve of a
deceased knight.

Palazzo
Parisio
Gardens
These priv a t e l y
owned gardens rank
amongst the
finest
in
Malta and
have seasonal appeal all
year round.
The two classic, baroque walled gardens are a charming mixture of Italian
symmetry and Mediterranean colour
and perfumes.
