The main bus terminus is in Valletta from where buses operate to all parts of Malta, although there are also direct, point to point, services. The cost of a bus route ranges from 47c to €1.16 including direct buses. The longest bus journey takes about fifty minutes; the average ride is between 20 and 30 minutes. Driving Driving is on the left. There is a speed limit of 70kms per hour on arterial roads and 40kph in urban areas. Boat Hire Canoes, rowing boats, sailing boats, pedalos and speedboats are available for hire from a number of operators in the more popular seaside resorts. Larger vessels and yachts are also available for charter. Public Holiday Labour Day Labour Day is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world, recognising the economic and social achievements of workers. Popularly known as May Day or International Workers' Day, the 1st of May is also a public holiday in Malta and Gozo. Activities commemorating this event take place mostly in Valletta. This is the regular inspection of the fort and garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John in charge of military affairs. During the re-enactment the fort's garrison (some 70 in all) is dressed in its best uniforms to demonstrate to the Grand Bailiff its military prowess. The activity will commence with the mother of the bride placing a flower pot on the window sill to draw attention that her daughter is ready for marriage The groom together with the (ghannej) a Maltese folk singer, go beneath the window where the flower pot was placed. He employs a match-maker to talk to the bride's mother about his intentions for her daughter. Once the consent is given, a wedding day is fixed. On the wedding day, the couple make their way to church under a canopy (baldakkin) accompanied by musicians, while the bride's friends dance to the music. The whole entourage leaves the church with the newlyweds. Afterwards, a reception will be held, consisting of traditional Maltese food which the guests brought with them. Singing and dancing add to the merriment of this memorable occasion. In the space of 45 minutes, visitors are taken on a journey through time, to discover the first settlers to the island, the great seafaring Phoenicians, the Roman Occupation, the Knights of St. John, the horrors of the Great Siege and the Second World War and much more. The show uses the latest in projection technology, and is available in one of 16 languages. After the show one can browse in the souvenir shop, which offers an extensive range of Maltese artifacts, or enjoy a light snack from the Cafeteria, which overlooks the magnificent Grand Harbour. The Malta Experience is the ideal first stop on the island. Valletta v All Buses ✉ Valletta Living History Valetta Living History is a 35 minute audiovisual show depicting the history, culture and lifestyle of Malta and the Maltese. Produced and screened in High Definition, the show has in a short period (opened in June 2010) received recognition for its quality, and has recently been awarded a Quality Assured seal by the Malta Tourism Authority. It is the only show of its type in Valletta to have received such recognition. The footage and original filming that compiles this docudrama not only make it interesting for tourists, but also instills a sense of pride in us Maltese, thus making it a true historical encounter. On the occassion of its 2nd anniversary from launching, the Moto Guzzi Malta Club shall be organising a static display of various models of Moto Guzzi motorcycles, all locally owned. Free admission v All Buses ✉ Boats, Creeks and Harbours Exhibition by Patrick Galea, a Maltese artist, normally involved in graphic design, pure design, he now proposes a visit to his “art at a glance” which, like a photographic lens, produces light and chromatic effects, which reveal a very evident descriptive dichotomy of the reality and places him in between magical realism and abstract art. Common to all of them is the sea and nature. The recurring theme of the bridge is not there by chance as the photographs are part of a larger retrospective by the artist, called Passages. These include key pieces such as his first ever poster produced for Sarah Bernhardt and subsequent theatrical performances. Examples of applied artwork to go on display shall range from jewellery items to cigarette cards and packaging. The exhibition shall also include works featuring his female representations for which he is best known and a work by the famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin presented to Mucha by the artist himself. The exhibition brings together for the first time three bodies of work by Vince Briffa based on the theme of the uncertainty of all that is human. It explores ambivalent spaces located at the centre of ambiguity, and addresses the disquiet boundaries between a happening and its memory, where neither the action nor its intention is clear and where memory is left with no nurturing material referent. The event will comprise trucks, pick ups, vans, buses, coaches and ex military vehicles. It is the only dedicated commercial vehicle event in Malta and is free entry to participants and the general public without any pre booking required. Over 200 vehicles are expected to participate. There will also be retail stalls, refreshment stands and other attractions. Stagedive and Kinemastik joined forces in the summer of 2009 for the concert by Bonnie Prince Billy, and are now collaborating once again to bring the outstanding Owen Pallett to these shores. Born in 1979, Pallett is a Canadian composer, violinist, keyboardist, and vocalist from Toronto, Ontario. He started his solo career under the name Final Fantasy, and soon gained a strong reputation for his eclectic live performances which sometimes include cover versions ranging from Bloc Party to Mariah Carey. Pallett is also well know for collaborating with such artists as Beirut, The Last Shadow Puppets, Grizzly Bear, Pet Shop Boys and Mika. He especially shares a special bond with The Arcade Fire, contributing orchestral and string arrangements on all 3 of their albums, include 2010’s Grammy-award winning ’The Suburbs’, as well as forming part of their touring line-up. Formerly the friars’ refectory, it had been transformed into an oratory - it is beautifully adorned by magnificent baroque paintings, an elaborate altarpiece and monks benches. Presently it is hosting weekly music recitals every Tuesday at noon, showcasing some of the best musicians found on the island. The recitals usually last about 50 minutes. Part of the entrance ticket is fund raising for the Franciscan community of St.Francis. Open Daily from 10am - 5pm. 34 Events Malta 35 gardens 4/23/11 2:19 PM Page 1 Gardens Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens Two gardens, facing the Grand Harbour in Valletta, both offering a panoramic view. The Upper Barrakka Gardens offer the best view since they’re more centered and at a much higher level. It was the gift of an eighteenth-century knight. The Anglican Garrison Church partly intrudes upon it. The garden is built on top of a demi-bastion. The Lower Barrakka Gardens are part of St Christopher’s Bastion and have a view of the harbour. At their center is a small Greek-style folly built in memory of Governor Sir Alexander Ball, who led the siege against the French in 1800 and subsequently became Britain’s first civil commissioner of Malta. The French during the 1798-1800 siege cultivated these gardens. Argotti Botanical Gardens In 1805 the British governor appointed a Carmelite friar, Malta’s first professor of natural history. He assembled the plants in Floriana’s Mall and 50 years later they were moved to the site of the present Argotti Gardens, then the preserve of a deceased knight. Buskett Gardens No more than 2kms from Dingli Cliffs, sitting under the watchful eye of Cardinal Grand Master de Verdalle’s summer retreat, are Buskett Gardens. Panoplies of foliage spread their shade over the valley floor, providing a welcome respite against the heat of summer. There are orange and cypress trees, irregular cacti, leguminous carobs, aromatic firs and the Judas tree, which foretells Easter with its pink blossom (this is said to be the tree from which Judas hung himself). Hastings Gardens From the National Museum of Fine Arts, it is well worth taking a stroll through the nearby Hastings Gardens, named after a former Governor General, the Marquess of Hastings (1824-26).
