Sometime later, he came out and told his mom he’d prayed about the matter. “That’s good,” she replied. “If you ask God for help to not misbehave, he’ll help you.” “Oh, I didn’t pray for help behaving,” said the boy. “I prayed for God to help you put up with me.” Special Dates National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2015 Mother’s Day, May 10, 2015 Ascension of the Lord, May 14, 2015 Armed Forces Day, May 16, 2015 Victoria Day (Canada), May 18, 2015 Pentecost, May 24, 2015 Memorial Day, May 25, 2015 Trinity Sunday, May 31, 2015 NFUMC Grapevine Newsletter The Pastor’s Message In last month's newsletter, I wrote about holiness or Christian perfection. This month I want to concentrate more on how we can begin to achieve that state. Back in February I attended the Upper Room Five Day Academy for Spiritual Formation, held at the Winshape Retreat on the campus of Berry College. The week was spent in a structured environment of worship, prayer, study, and small group conferencing. This was a concentrated effort to practice some of the spiritual disciplines. We began and ended each day with a short worship service. We used the format from the Upper Room Worship Book, but the details are not as important as the general form which was scripture, song, and prayer. This simple format can be done in small groups or individually. There are a number of resources available to guide you in morning and evening devotion or worship. They generally include suggested scripture readings on a daily schedule, psalms or hymns to sing (or if you are musically challenged as I am, to simply read the words), and suggested prayer forms. Bishop Reuben Job has published several helpful resource guides to individual and group daily worship. If you prefer informal formats, just spend some time with scripture and in prayer. During this week, week celebrated Holy Communion each afternoon. This was possible because in our group environment, there were several ordained ministers available to lead us daily. This is not always possible on a daily basis, but Holy Communion is a means of grace that we should participate in as often as possible. Our study sessions consisted of lecture, quiet time, and discussion. Individually, we can participate in the spiritual discipline of study by reading scripture, Christian classics, and/or the many books, magazines, and articles available which can enrich our faith. We have available to us many means of study that can help us to grow spiritually. During the five day academy we met together in small groups each evening to share together our thoughts, concerns, ideas, or anything else that we had experienced during the day. A small accountability group helps to keep us growing in faith and practicing the other spiritual disciplines. My doctoral research project showed that over time, regular participation in such a small group enhances the spiritual growth and discipleship developed by the other disciplines. As we wrote last month, holiness defines a way of behaving that is determined by the character of God. The way we can achieve that way of behaving is by practicing the spiritual disciplines. Another excellent resource is Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline. April 2015 “Memorial Day” Is it enough to think today Of all our brave, then put away The thought until a year has sped? Is this full honor for our dead? Is it enough to sing a song And deck a grave; and all year long Forget the brave who died that we Might keep our great land proud and free? Full service needs a greater toll, That we who live give heart and soul To keep the land they died to save, And be ourselves, in turn, the brave! —Annette Wynne NFUMC Grapevine Newsletter May2015 Teller Teams 5/03 Lin Johns 5/10 Alvarez, Rice 5/17 Coleman 5/24 Schultz 5/31 Greeters 5/03 Gina Alford, Sarah Stone 5/10 Faye Harrington, Julie Ulmer 5/17 Bill Cain, Bobby Watson 5/24 Carol McGahee, Debbi Carroll 5/31 Debbi Carroll, Kathy Kirby Ushers 5/03 Richard and Patsy Coleman, Rudy Herren, Ken Holewinski 5/10 Sammy Andrews, Lewis Gregg, Serenah Tyson, John Sugg 5/17 Frank and Susan Sorci, Rick Warr, Maurice Robinson 5/24 Larry Boak, Eddie and Annette Poindexter, Sarah Stone 5/31 DJ and Silvia Flockhart, Aramis Alvarez, JR Davis 01 Adam Pache Elaine Sugg 02 Ernestine English 03 David Teubl 04 Violet Rish Stacy Holcomb Lynne Davidson 05 Reed Jackson 06 Alicia Alvarez 07 Brenda Michel Rebecca Ann Douville Don Mackey 08 Sarah Stone 09 Jason Sugg Silvia Flockhart 10 Jama Shackelford 11 Libby Bazydlo 12 Lauren Smith Shirley Blackston Bryan Krilla 14 Megan Stubbs 15 Kaitlin Harper 16 Cathy Lowe Matthew Tennihan 17 Kathy Stanton Carolyn Phillips 20 Chris Evans 21 Cathy Cook 22 Eric Stamm DJ Flockhart 24 Lavon Eldred Richard Coleman Marilyn Knopps Doug Burrell 26 Marsha Elzey Amy Matusek Stephanie Carper 28 Pat Grunden Lin Johns 29 Nancy Daniell 30 Lewis Gregg Ed Andross 31 Annette Poindexter 11 Frank & Susan Sorci 28 Ken & RayeAnn Holewinski Liturgists 5/03 Barbara Justice, Steve Justice 5/10 Pam Ashman, Patsy Coleman 5/17 Randy Longino, Serenah Tyson 5/24 Marie Cain, Ardy Warr 5/31 Janet Bibee, Debbi Carroll Donut Sunday 5/10 Ed and Martha Nolan Nursery Volunteers 5/03 Pam Davis and Julie Ulmer 5/10 Susan Read 5/17 Linda Longino and Debbi Carroll 5/24 Connie Schultz 5/31 Susan Read Children's Church Leaders 5/03 Ardy Warr 5/10 Alicia Alvarez 5/17 Susan Read 5/24 Lynne Keiser 5/31 Susan Read Every Little Bit Helps As part of NFUMC’s ongoing fundraising, please continue to bring in gold of any kind, stray earrings, necklaces, etc; used ink cartridges; IHOP - Fayetteville receipts; Aluminum cans. It is not just for person who have memory impairment or some kind of physical need - however that is one of many things the program does offer. May 2015 A Hymn for Pentecost Eighteenth-century brothers John and Charles Wesley, co-founders of the Methodist Church, were prolific hymn writers. At one point, they made a concerted effort to increase the number of Pentecost-related hymns available to worshipers. Use Charles Wesley’s hymn “O Thou Who Camest From Above” as a prayer that the Holy Spirit will burn brightly in your heart and life today: O Thou who camest from above, the pure celestial fire to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love upon the mean altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer and fervent praise. Janet and Jan are doing a great job of recruiting and are very enthusiastic as they gather a group together. Maurice is anxious to have a reason to cook for a group. We need the help of the membership to have people coming and taking advantage of this mission outreach until it can function on its own. It can be as structured or relaxed as people want it to be. The Evangelism Committee is encouraging our own members to come on Tuesdays and Fridays and gather with friends and neighbors. As long as we know you are coming - Maurice will cook for us. Call Janet at 404-863-7335 to make your reservation. Photos are of the open house held for Open Hearts Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire to work and speak and think for Thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up thy gift in me.
