Dreams of urbanization:
The local economic impacts of nuclear power
facilities and post-Fukushima regional policy

Since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, it has been widely recognized in Japan
that municipalities which have accepted the location of nuclear power facilities (NPFs) receive
large employment opportunities and NPF-related fiscal benefits. This seminar provides some
empirical evidence of NPFs’ local impacts and its policy implications based on Ando’s recently
published article “Dreams of urbanization: Quantitative case studies on the local impacts of
nuclear power facilities using the synthetic control method”.
Michihito Ando is a researcher at National Institute of Population and Social Security
Research in Japan. He specializes in public economics, local public finance, and applied
econometrics. He is expected to obtain Ph.D. degree in Economics from Uppsala University
in May, 2015.
