Driver and Worker of the Weekend Awards
May 14-15 Double Regional at Thunderhill
The Driver of the Weekend and Worker of the Weekend Awards are given to an individual or crew
DRAFT Program Expanded to Include Race Entry Credits
The DRAFT program has been in effect since 2004, allowing an SCCA driver to earn credit for
test days by volunteering as a race official in any specialty: Flagging, Tech, Timing, Grid, or
Worker Transport. A driver earns credit depending on the number of hours worked.
who shows outstanding performance in their role during that weekend’s event.
Starting in 2016, the
DRAFT program has been expanded to include
Region Race Entry credits.

credit. Volunteering four days earns a $300 entry credit.
Use the SFR DRAFT Program.
To participate in the program, the driver contacts a volunteer chief

and arranges to volunteer. After working, the Chief will give the
driver an official DRAFT card with the hours worked signed off.
David Ray
James Herbst
Driver of the Weekend
During the Double Regional #3/#4
at Thunderhill, the Announce Crew
picked David Ray, #30, SMG, as the
Driver of the Weekend. David had
issues with sound during his first qualifying session and had to start the first
Group 5 race at the back of the field,
which was position 45. He managed to
finish 3rd overall. During race number
two for that group, he battled with
fellow SMG driver, Sean Wheeler, #06,
and was the overall race winner.
Worker of the Weekend
The Social Crew picked James Herbst,
Chief of Worker Transportation at
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca due to the
fact he helped bring the heavy items in
for the Social Crew and shopping, as
needed. He also provided outstanding
support to the Course Marshal Crew
by transporting their truck and trailer.
He was a tremendous help wherever he
was needed during the event.
Recycling Etiquette
First, thank you all for your support. In an effort to keep our Recycling Program moving forward
and staffed please follow the guidelines below.
One full, validated card is equal to two full days worked. One card
equals $150 towards an SFR race entry or one-half day of testing.
3. Please, keep all trash out of the recycling bags or buckets
4. Only items with a CRV markings are accepted for recycling
5. If you really want to score points with the Social Crew, separate cans, plastic bottle, and beer
bottles. (I know that’s a dream wish, but why not, right?)

As you probably read in the April Wheel, the Social Crew lost one of their
own, as Pete Fairwell passed away from a sudden heart attack. Pete was
the Crew’s “go to” guy, who headed up the recycling program that funded
the annual worker Steak and Lobster dinner.
The Social Crew is in need of someone, or multiple folks, to pick up the
recycling at the end of each of our events, both Regionals, as well as “Pro”
events. The recycling would be located in the usual Social locations at
each of our three tracks. These locations are, under the canopy at Thunderhill, at Turn 11 at Laguna Seca, and under the grandstands at Sonoma.
The person(s) would be responsible for taking care of the recycling and
returning the proceeds to the Social Chief. In turn, the Social Chief would
sign off your draft card, as appropriate.

Grant was amazed at how the
car handled, braked and accelerated compared to the big, heavy
American cars he was use to. He
sold the Pontiac and after looking around, bought an AC Bristol
Ace. Since he was too young for a
road racing license, he lied about
his age and began autocrossing
which taught him valuable skills
in car setup while he honed his
driving skills.
ALLEN GRANT
The 1960’s were exciting times for race car
drivers and race fans alike with new cars,
highly competitive racing, big teams, new
tracks and big money pouring into the
sport. One car owner who took advantage
of this period was Carroll Shelby and his
Shelby race cars. During the decade of
the 1960’s, Shelby unleashed a string of
great cars destined to become legends,
like himself. The 289 and 427 Cobras; the
Cobra Daytona Coupe; the GT350 and
GT500 Mustangs; the Sunbeam Tiger; the
GT40 (in co-operation with Ford) and the
King Cobra.
To drive these cars there were a who’s

When Grant turned twenty-one
years old, he took the SCCA
drivers school (Ed Leslie was his
instructor), obtained his license
then entered his first road race
at Stockton…he won his class. He
won his class again at Cotati in
April, followed by another class
win at Oakland Airport in July.
All in all, Grant won eleven of the

who of drivers including, Miles, Bondurant,
Leslie, Holbert, McDonald, Titus, Morton,
Gurney, etc. Among these greats in the
1960’s was a lesser known, local Northern
California driver who had a highly successful yet very short career. His name is Allen
Grant.
Turning sixteen years of age, his father
bought him a used car, a 1950 Pontiac
Catalina which he promptly customized
with the help of his car buddies, one of
which was a fellow by the name of George
Lucas. Yes, the same Lucas who went on to
Star Wars fame years later.
Grant was born and raised in Modesto,
California and from an early age he was
fascinated with mechanical devices which
eventually led to a keen interest in cars.
Living out in the country and before he
was old enough to get a drivers license, he
gained some early experience by driving
the family car up and
. down the driveway.
Grant, Lucas and their other car buddies
would cruise Modesto’s main street in
their customize cars checking themselves
out in the department store windows and
the girls strolling on the sidewalks. This
ritual became the basis for Lucas’s famous
movie, “American Graffiti”. His cruising
days changed forever when he was offered
Candlestick Park 1963
Grant had been following the emergence
of Carroll Shelby and decided to offer his
services to the team as a driver for 1963.
Shelby had a full slate of drivers but he
hired Grant as a welder and eventually
moved him to the front office ordering cars
from AC and working with the dealers. One
day he received a call from Coventry Motors
in Walnut Creek who wanted to buy a Cobra
to race. Grant only had one car to sell, an
ex-team 289 Cobra which he offered to the
dealer on one condition - he would be the
driver. Deal accepted so Grant prepared the
car with his friend George Lucas and went
racing.
Since the Cobra was essentially the same
as his AC but with much more power, Grant
adapted quickly to his new car winning his
class at Santa Barbara, another at Candlestick Park then a second place at Riverside
and another first at Laguna Seca. However,
once again, Shelby didn’t have an opening
for him so he accepted an offer from Allen
Green Chevrolet to drive a new Cheetah.
The Cheetah was a handful and it took most
of the 1964 season to sort the car resulting
in a subpar season by Grant’s standards.
However, by now, Shelby had recognized
Grant’s talent and asked him to join the
team for the 1965 FIA Championship season. He co-drove with Leslie, Gondurant and
Jo Schlesser in pursuit of the Manufacturers
Championship including races at Daytona,
Sebring, Monza, Reims and Le Mans. By
the end of the series, Team Shelby won the
World Championship and Grant’s career
was on a roll.
After returning to the U.S., Shelby offered
Grant a Lola T70 to drive in Can Am but this
opportunity suddenly ended when the car
was sold to Lothar Motschenbacher. At this
point, Grant decided it was time to honor
a commitment he had made his parents
to get a college degree. After graduating, Grant joined the family construction
business and never looked back, ending his
stellar driving career but embarking on a
highly successful one as a residential and
commercial builder/developer.

What started as a program with one Formula
Speed 2.0 and then a chance to move up to a
pro-Mazda car has turned into a two-car team
with the Formula Speed 2.0.
The program works as follows:
· In July VMB announces the scholarship
· Interested driver’s submit their resume
(some send you-tube videos)
· The first cut eight drivers are selected
· From there the scholarship group gets
together and narrows it down to four
· Next stop is an audition at Buttonwillow
Raceway
· The audition includes
1. driving the car,
2. an individual interview,
3. question and answer session,
4. a feedback session with the team
The top two driver’s are selected with the
number one pick getting 60% funding and the
number 2 pick getting 40% funding.

We all watch sports on Television, whether it is baseball, football, or basketball. What we are
watching are the top athletes of their profession. To break into the NBA, NFL, or MLB, you have to
be the best of the best. What you do not see is all the work it took to get to that point in their lives.
The development of the athletes starts at an early age, the countless practices, camps, and games
that go into all of these sports.
There are entire industries dedicated towards
developing these kids to play at the next level.
By the time you see them playing on television
someone has spent a lot of time and money on the
athletes to get to that point.
Unfortunately auto racing does not have that
support system in place to extract the best of the
best to compete on the world stage. Top race car
drivers get to the top based on several factors
such as rich parents, good luck, and being in the
right place at the right time. Very rarely does pure
talent play a role.
That is until now. Let me introduce you to Steve
10
SFRSCCA.ORG
JUNE 2016
Brisentine. Steve is a racing enthusiast. As a kid he went to sports car races with his father. Steve
never raced himself, but has always enjoyed watching racing especially formula car racing.
One day he was walking in the paddock and saw a sign at the World Speed encampment. The sign
said for a certain amount of money you could own your own racecar. A Formula Speed 2.0 to be exact.
Steve gave it some thought and made a call to Telo Stewart at World Speed. They talked and pretty
soon the idea of Steve owning a car for some talented racer to drive blossomed.
The idea was that Steve would provide the car and partial funding to someone that wanted to make a
career out of motorsports. His idea was partially stimulated by his son who played baseball in college. To
reach the college level of baseball there is a pretty well established pecking order that eliminates all but
the truly dedicated and talented players. He wanted to establish a similar program in auto racing.
In auto racing the cost of equipment all but eliminates everyone except the privileged few. Steve
wanted to do something about the cost factor so the talent side of the equation could shine through.
Once the scholarship recipients agree to the
program the real work begins. The drivers are
encouraged to go to the World Speed shop and
develop a rapport with the mechanics and the
engineers. This is an important part of being
a good race car driver. The drivers need to be
able to relate to them how the car is behaving
on the track and learn how to describe both
positive and negative changes in the car. If the
driver tries to develop the relationship at the
racetrack he is making life more difficult on
himself.
The drivers are given classroom instruction in marketing themselves and talking in
front of the decision makers of corporate
America. They have to learn to bring value to
the company and have to learn how to ask for
the funding. Another part of the instruction is
how to stay in the racing business, which we
all know could be ruined by one bad season or
by a mishap that puts you on the sidelines. In
addition to marketing themselves, the drivers
are encouraged to promote themselves through
social media. Racing is a fast-moving business
that utilizes every advantage. Social media is
just one example of getting the word out and
making a name for yourself.
This year's drivers are Carter Williams and
Jonathon Sugianto. Williams is a very accomplished Karter and Suguanto came through the
Skip Barber ladder system. So far this season
the two drivers have taken turns setting fast
times and winning races. They have six of the
14 races in the books. If you take a look at their
Facebook pages you can see the two driver’s
are very focused on putting their class work
to good use. They both have worked towards
getting sponsorship and both make sure they
keep their fans up to date on not only their
progress, but the contributions everyone makes
to the team.
Both drivers are working really hard at achieving their dream of being professional racecar
drivers. Even though they are serious about
their racing according to VMB founder Steve
Brisentine what he likes is the friendly com-
petition the two drivers’ have displayed. But
he said do not mistake their friendly attitude
in the paddock for being a pushovers on the
racetrack. Steve said that once the green flag
drops the two are all about winning and beating each other.
Steve tells me he is really enjoying seeing the
driver’s develop both on and off the track.
What makes him even more excited is the
success of last year's VMB scholarship winner.
Last year Jaden Conwright flew the VMB flag.
This year Jaden has jumped the pond and is
racing for the Vincenzo Sospiri Racing team in
the Italian Formula 4 series. Racing in Europe
is very competitive and so far Jaden has had
a steep learning curve, but Steve feels the development he received from the VMB driving
academy will eventually give him an edge over
his competitors.
We never know where the next break in life
will come from. Steve is so passionate about
formula car racing he wants to help develop
the stars of tomorrow. Steve sees the future of
his vision with others stepping up and helping
as car owners and becoming part of the VMB
academy process.
America is a land of opportunity and the VMB
drving academy is providing that opportunity,
I am hoping that one of these guys will be
spraying some champagne on the prince of
Monaco or maybe we will see their face on the
Borg Warner trophy. If Steve Bristentine has
anything to say about it, it will surely happen!
Jonathan Sugianto
When I first heard of the VMB driving academy I was jealous. I thought
to myself where was something like this when I was a kid? But then I
heard the story of one of the driving academy students, Jonathan Sugianto.
Jonathan was only eight years old when he received the news that
would forever change who he was. He was visiting family in Jakarta
Indonesia when he started to feel weak. His family took him to the doctor and unfortunately his weak condition was because he was suffering
from cancer.
Jonathan and his parents returned to the U.S. as soon as possible and
went to the City of Hope, which is a research and treatment center for
cancer, diabetes, and other life threatening diseases. Upon meeting
with the physicians the bad news was confirmed. Jonathon was diagnosed with Leukemia.
Telling an eight year old kid the bad news is a very touchy situation.
So the medical staff wanted to break the news to Jonathan as easy as

possible. They sat him down with a therapist and
they explained what was going on in his body
through the use of drawings and diagrams. He
understood the issues and he understood the disease was beatable. He also understood that the
fight ahead of him was not going to be easy.
The fight started right away and lasted 3 ½
years. During that time Jonathan had to endure
chemotherapy, operations, and therapy. According to Jonathan the overall experience was quite
tough, but the doctors and nurses at the City of
Hope did a great job in treating him.
Three-and-a-half years is a long time for a dark
cloud to be hovering over you, but with the help
of the people at the City of Hope, his family, his
friends, and Auto Racing he was able to remain
optimistic and keep taking life one day at a time.
It is amazing what a good support system can do
for the human spirit. Jonathan credits the staff at
the City of Hope for treating him like he was one
of their own children. Jonathan was more then a
patient there and he proudly works with the City
of Hope to share his story. Jonathan's friends and
family were there through everything as well.
Just the fact that they showed up and encouraged him gave him strength to keep fighting.
Lastly, motorsports was something he always
got excited about when he was at the hospital.
Every weekend, he would tune in to NASCAR on
Sunday and watch the races. When the Make-AWish Foundation came along, he asked to meet
his racing hero Jeff Gordon. And he did! Jonathan said fighting cancer was incredibly difficult,
painful, and scary. However, through the help of
his friends, family, doctors, nurses, and passion
for racing, he was able to get through it.
At 20 years old Jonathan has been through a
lot. He has an understanding of life that many
people never get to realize no matter how old
they are. Everyday he wakes up he has a smile on
his face and is grateful to be alive. He realizes he
has only one life to live and is very appreciative
of the fact that he is healthy and he gets to race
cars.
He approaches life with a sense of appreciation
and determination. He only now truly understands how serious a condition he was
in and he credits the doctors, nurses, family,
and friends for providing the encouragement he needed to survive the ordeal. His
plan is to live life the way he wants to live
and is determined to make the most of it.
He wants to go out and make a name for
himself.
Jonathan’s advice for others going through
such treatments is:
“Take it day by day. I know that there are
people out there who are going through
hell. It's painful, exhausting, traumatic,
scary, and life threatening. It isn't easy. It's
tough to see a light at the end of the tunnel
when the process could take years to finish.
But I learned that everyday that passes is
just one day closer to the finish line. So take
it day by day. Hug your family, talk with you
doctor, try to see the positives, and eventually you'll see the finish line.”
Now that he is cancer free Jonathan has
two goals in life
1. To win the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona; he
has been a fan of the race since Jeff Gordon
raced in it back in 2007.
2. Be a role model for fellow cancer patients.
He wants to show them there is a happy
ending and that there is hope. When he was
going through the treatment he did not see
himself having a happy ending, yet he is
here today. He gets to drive race cars, travel
across the county, meet new people, and live
a happy life. He wants to be able to give hope
to others who are going through what he
went through.
Most people take a lifetime to learn about
things such as bravery, determination, and
compassion, Jonathan is intimately familiar
with these qualities at the age of 20. Given
his advanced life skills and appreciation
for what he has, Jonathan will not have any
problems achieving his goals!

Quality is a journey of passion.
BY Steve Jaroch
I had the opportunity to sit down with Edgar
Lau during the IMSA weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and asked him to fill me in on
how he went from working on the Course Marshal crew, to joining me, Kathie, & Mike in the
tower, announcing, to becoming a professional
race car driver, both here and abroad. Below is
his story in his own words.
What Has Happed in Five Short Years? The Edgar Lau
Story.
The Saturday during the IMSA weekend marked my 5th anniversary with
SCCA.
Backdating 5 years ago in 2011 was when I joined the SCCA volunteer
worker ranks as a means to get involved in racing. Being an SCCA worker
taught me a lot about what racing is about.
Over the course of the first few months of volunteering, I have gotten to
know a lot of SCCA racers which opened the door for me to become a refueler for Ed Railton's Premiere Auto Racing team at the SCCA 4Hr Enduro
and subsequently the 25 hours of Thunderhill as a crew chief.
Ed offered me a drive in the SCCA Driver's School the following February
in 2012. I had spent a lot of time practicing at the local indoor kart track
to prepare myself and yet it was still a physically tough weekend with my
car's transmission failing on day 2 and I had to share a car with someone
else. Aside from that, everything went well and I successfully got my novice
permit.
Over the course of 2012 I have been joining my friends at track days, passing
on what I've learnt during Driver's School. I soon became an instructor for
Hooked On Driving. My first race came on the final SCCA weekend at Laguna Seca where I ran 2 spec miata races and the 4 hour Enduro race with
fellow graduate of 2012, Matt Eagan in a 1st gen RX7.
My debut weekend was filled with drama. I was running mid pack for most
of the practice and qualifying sessions. In my first race, it was after the
green flag that I started realizing I'm actually racing. Many thoughts rushed
through my head trying to contemplate how this all happened. While at
the same time trying to negotiate the craziness of a Spec Miata race. I will
always remember that time when I saw cars going 5 wide up to turn 6, 3
cars on the pavement and 2 on the gravel on either side.
Towards the latter half of the race I was locked in a 3 car battle, giving it my
best effort I took the lead of the trio when the other 2 cars went wide while
battling into the Andretti hairpin. I tried to push even harder in hopes to
make a break for it but at the end of the lap I finally overdid it. I dropped
two wheels in the dirt coming out of turn 10 and in an attempt to cover my
mistake I made another rookie mistake of yanking the car back on track
which of course shot me towards the other side of the track and headed
for the concrete. damage was light with only a bent camber bolt in the rear
and I was fine. But that also meant I didn't get my race signed off by the
stewards. I felt really bad for being a typical young hot head making rookie
mistakes on my first race. It really shook me that night because I needed 2
races signed off in order to have my full regional license. Good thing I also
had the 4 Hour Enduro race as a backup. The first race served as a lesson
learned and I kept my driving at 90% for the rest of the weekend.
I still volunteered on the SCCA safety crew as well as crewed for Ed again in
the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
In 2013, I focused on learning the ropes of finding sponsorships through
working at a tuner shop. We were able to pull off a program involving Lexus
USA giving us a 2014 model to build and race in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill that year. I was involved in most of the car building process as well as
running a team of over 20 crew members.
2014 was arguably the year that changed my life. After attempting for the
past 3 years, I was finally able to make it to the top 32 fastest racing gamers
in North America on the Playstation game, Gran Turismo.
A national finals would then determine the top 12 out of the 32 to enter the
GT Academy program and reality TV Show that emphasizes on turning
gamers into professional racing drivers. We did interviews with the TV
producers as well as auto crossing a real car during the 3 days at the finals
and I made it into the top 12.
All 12 of us were flown to Silverstone, UK to take part in a week long shootout that involved a lot driving and boot camp style fitness tests to determine
a winner who would then sign a contract to become Nissan's factory driver.

My second stint was
after nightfall. Also my
first time racing in the
dark at Thunderhill. I
began the stint a little
nervous going into
complete darkness
but after a safety car
restart, something
clicked in my head
and I felt that I was in
one with the car. From
there on, I was consistently clicking off very
fast laps till the end of
my stint and getting
out of the car in first
place. It was already
midnight when I got
out and I was ready for
a good night's sleep in
the RV.
I fought hard but ultimately lost out on the second
to last day in the Gymkhana challenge where I
failed to pop a water balloon with a spike on the
roof of my car which added penalty time to my
lap. I was very sad that I missed out after being
so close to becoming a pro driver, but thanks to
judges Danny Sullivan and Boris Said's encouragement, I picked myself up and went for my next
target to race in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill after
getting back to the US.
I was offered a drive right after returning to the
US but the deal fell through 2 weeks from the
race. Luckily, Roger Eagleton, one of the drivers I
crewed for in the SCCA Enduro referred me to his
team, RJ Racing that has took class victory in 2 of
the past 3 years. After lots of convincing, I was let
on to the team.
My first race in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill was
another hero story. I have learnt my lesson from
my first Spec Miata race, to take things step by
step, be humble and soak up everything I was
taught which is what I did this time around. My
first stint in the car came as the second stint of
our race. I have only had 15 minutes of practice
in the car and I was still learning the limits of
the car during the stint. Learning how to deal
with the traffic was a whole different ball game.
fast cars were everywhere and you have to drive
in your mirrors a lot of times but it still didn't
prevent myself from getting surprised by some of
the sport racers. I finished the first stint without
much drama and I got out of the car for a break.
During my absence we had made it to the top 3
from last in our class with good pit strategy and
clean driving from the drivers.

JUNE 2016
4 hours later, I was
woken up by the cars
flying past the pits. At
the very same time,
our team manager popped in and asked, "Edgar
are you good to go? We need you in the car in 15
minutes." There was no time to explain, I got in
my race suit, shoved the peanut butter and jelly
sandwich that the team prepared beforehand and
hopped in the car.
The car handled strange at first, not being able to
carry the speed it used to carry in the corners. My
lap times were a few seconds off pace and 10 minutes in, I heard thumping noise coming from the
right rear of the car. Coupled with the snap oversteer that pursued I was pretty sure the tire
was corded. I radioed back to the pits telling
them the tire will hold for about 15-30 minutes
at most. All I got back was "you should be fine for
another hour or so." And so I did. There were a
couple of times that I almost lost it through the
fast corners when the rear suddenly broke loose
but I brought the car back safe.
The crew changed the tire out and it was corded
all around. I was quite surprised it still held air
in. I was later informed that the 2nd place car
had their fastest driver in the car for 3 back to
back stints trying to chase us down. Fortunately
we were able to maintain first place at the end of
our stint but it was a close race to the end with a
victory margin of 40 seconds thanks to a splash
and dash they had to make half hour before the
checkered flag that secured our win.
Coming off from a high I thought it would be a
straight shot in getting sponsorship for my racing in 2015 but I was wrong. Nothing changed
much. I still knocked on doors and still got the
same reply; we've already allocated our budget
somewhere else.
One of the pro racers I have always kept in touch
while I was volunteering was David Cheng, a Le
Mans Prototype driver. He asked if I would like to
do a race in his place in the Audi R8 Cup in China
in two weeks’ time for a discounted price.
I have been working on getting a seat in the same
series for a few months but I was never able to
come up with the budget for the full season so
it was a no brainer to take that seat in the R8. At
least I would make my GT race debut. So I had
everything planned, air tickets booked and flew
back for the race.
Bad news came a little later when I got an email
saying Audi needs to approve the driver for the
replacement, so everything was in the air again.
Yet I arrived China, not knowing if I'd be racing
or not. I waited in a shabby motel for half the
week, until I asked around
The race was sponsored by a family friend's company, this friend has been following my progress
since I started racing and decided to give me a
hand.
at the track on Thursday that they already had a
driver for the car. It was a huge disappointment. I
had taken time off school, made promises to family and friends to chip in for this opportunity. It
made me felt like perhaps this was the end of the
road. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be.
The same Sunday, I messaged a team manager
about my return to Asia. A team I made contact
with in December 2014 when I was in China for
Christmas. The team manager's first reply was
asking if I could do a test in the Renault Clio Cup
car the following Monday in China. I did not need
to be asked twice. I was delighted.
I only had one session in the car, the lap times
were not spectacular but I was on pace with
the podium drivers right off the bat. I can tell I
exceeded the team's expectations. They agreed to
have me do an endurance race in the Renault with
them in July for a good price as well as promote
me as their development driver. That is when I
realized perhaps God has a plan for me and I just
have to have faith and push on.
I went back to US to continue school when
another opportunity came up in June. The team
manager called me saying a driver who had
entered a Ferrari F430 GT3 in a big race; with
40,000 live audiences, national television and online live streaming, was not able to make the race
due to an urgent business trip and asked if I could
take the spot for a price. Again another tempting
opportunity for more exposure.
But good stories always have a twist in the plot.
After confirming my air ticket, I got another call
from the team saying the driver changed his mind
and he'll be racing. I made it clear that I wasn't
happy with the arrangement. He came back saying they have a 2010 BMW M3 GT car as backup.
So I took the spot.
That race weekend was yet another dramatic
one. I had to change my FIA license to one that
is issued by China, so I missed practice day. My
first session in the car was qualifying. I took it as
practice, having practiced on the simulator I had
an idea of what the track is like so the rest lied
upon my car control. I took pole position, and in
the first race due to overheating after a safety car
period. I had to park the car on track, restart the
engine to reset errors from the ECU that caused
the transmission to skip gears while driving. I
continued to chase down first place and 2 laps
from the end the power steering broke. I pushed
on and before the checkered I retook first place.
Second race was more smooth as I led from green
to checkered.
A month after the race, came the endurance race
in the Renault Clio. The weekend started alright
with our team taking 1-2 in qualifying.
We hit electrical issues though when my-co driver
did the start of the race which had set us back by
30 laps. There was no hope for making up the laps
with the remaining time although I went all out to
the end and got back 5 laps.
I had a surgery after the race for an injury in my
wrist from playing hockey since 2014 right before
I flew out for GT Academy. Yes, I have been racing
handicapped for 2 years. One of the carpal tunnel
tendons would pop out because the ligament
holding it in broke and the tendon would lose
leverage under high tension.
I rested until September when the cast finally
came off my first rehab was winning an open to
public simulator race in Hong Kong.
During my injury I had also been talking to teams
and making several seminars on racing and my
personal career hoping to promote the sport as
well as myself to potential sponsors.

There were talks about
racing in GT Asia, the
premiere GT championship in Asia. I had a
sponsor confirmed to

car for me to race but
I couldn't muster up
enough funds for the
running cost so the
plan was ultimately
unsuccessful.
the months. Getting dressed to all sorts of events
in hopes to get a program together. The good
news finally came when I met a PR manager
through a friend who has done livery design for
him.
In short, I sent him my profile and he would
forward it to his clients. We had no idea if it was
going to work but a month later, good news came.
There was still complications with looking for a
car and a team to run it and the contract with the
sponsor wasn't signed until 3 weeks before the
race in February of 2016.
In some ways, this was already a dream come
true. The whole racing program itself is a success
with the balance in the green, meaning I am making a bit of money off it. Secondly, it's in a Porsche
997 cup car, a car I had dreamed of driving let
alone racing.
The first race weekend was quite a rough ride.
There were issues with the shipment of the car
due to heavy fog, so it arrived at the track late. As
a result, my first time in the car was during Friday
practice with a lot of prep work such as bedding
in brakes that needed to be done.
We spent most of the practice shaking down the
car and running checks. As a result, I was not able
to do any continuous running in the car to get
familiar. The lap times did not impress anyone. It
was a huge hit to my confidence. Luckily I managed to pick myself up after a nice dinner with
new friends from the track.
I went out for qualifying the next morning in
high spirits. Lap times did not improve but that
was due to many yellow flags being shown in the
session.
Race 1 went smooth. I was able to capture 2nd
place thanks to one of my competitors spinning
into the gravel trap. Lap times tumbled down by a
few seconds as my mind went into race mode.
Race 2 was less dramatic. I held 3rd place most
of the race as I am down 100 horse power against
the Audis and Lamborghinis.
Next race will be in June and hopefully with more
seat time I will be able to close the gap to the
other cars.
Many more plans in the works at the moment
for the latter half of the year so keep your fingers
crossed for me.
I wish, as we all do, that Edgar continues to
be “One of Us that Went “Pro”. We knew you
when……my friend. Thank you for taking the time
to fill us in on your progress. Please keep us up
to dat.
There had been a lot of
talks with many different people throughout

Vodden, #1, was .9 seconds behind, to finish 2nd
in class. Bruce Trenery, #2, took top honors in
STU, finishing 7th overall, while the ITS winner
was the #57 of Ben Brandt, who finished 9th.
Tupper Hull, #50 clinched the win in ITA, but
just barely, as Taylor Vance, #51, was just .2 seconds away from a win.! David Allen, #61, received
the full points in ITX.

Twenty-eight novice drivers joined the veterans for an exciting weekend of racing. For this
event the top novice drivers in each class would win an award, so it made for great racing.
Mother nature also put in her two cents, as unsettled weather prevailed throughout the
weekend, as well as very high winds.
Race 1, Group 5
ITS, ITA, ITB, ITC, ITX, ITR, FP, HP, GTL, STL, STU,
SMG, E30, B-Spec, T3
Saturday morning saw the usual practice sessions and a couple of qualifying sessions. After the four qualifying sessions after the lunch break, it was
time to go racing. Forty-five cars made up the field for the 25-minute event,
including 9 novice drivers. Starting dead last was David Ray, SMG, #30, due
to sound issues during qualifying. Group 5 had their normal amount of off &
ons, (O/O), as well as spun & continued, (S/C), calls. Four minutes into the
race, T3 had novice driver, Duke Zander, #35, ITA, spin. At the same time
Schuyler Vanbuskirk, #31, ITA, mixed it up with Yehia Eissa, #88. ITX. The
#88 suffered right side damage, while the #31 was showing left front smoke
from tire rub. T14 report that is was getting much worse. Tim Auger, #07,
STL, had three off & ons prior to receiving an open black flag. T5 reported
the #07 put its nose into the rear of the #20, ITA, of Andrew Wait. After
nine of the 13 lap event, novice Ross Lindell, #11, ITX, would retire.

Race 1, Group 4
FF, CF, FV, FST, F5, FC, FFTS
Thirteen cars qualified and all of them made up
the grid for the second race of the afternoon. After
5 of the 14 laps completed, Michael Bernstein,
#12, FF, would take his car back paddock. T2
report that Lawrence Bacon, #63, FV, was slow
and he finally pulled off on the bypass road below
the T5 flag station. After completing 10 laps, the
#54, FF, of Chuck Horn, would also retire, but in
the process, he set a new track record of 1:53.815.
Scott Vreeland, #51, FC, led flag to flag, with a
margin of victory over fellow FC driver, Paul
Rodler, #45, of 37.326. (Congratulations to Paul
& Kimberley on their recent marriage.) Jeffrey
Pietz, #80, would be 19.5 seconds behind Paul
to finish 3rd overall and 3rd in class. Over in FF,
Steve Meyer would be victorious in the #48, by
only .4 seconds over the #50, FF, of David Jalen!
Scott Waracka, #22, would finish 3rd in class, .9
seconds behind David. That was the way it went
the entire race. Finishing 9th overall and 1st in
CF, was Richard McClosky, #6, 2.7 seconds ahead
of the only other CF of Daniel Wise, #77. (More
Cowbell!!) The #63, who was the only FV retired
after completing 7 of the 14 laps, so I think he will
still receive his win in class.
Race 1, Group 3
ITE, GT1, 2, 3, PC, GTA, SP, EP, N3,
NL, SS, T1, 2, 4, E46, AS
Only 14 cars would qualify for the Group 3 race,
including four novice
drivers. One of them,
Joe Montana, #88, SP,
would go off driver’s
right at T8, with the
call from the corner
worker, “tow now”,
after only completing three laps. Double
yellows were displayed
while the Safety Car
was deployed. T8 also
observed car #15, AS,
of Michael Thompson,
smoking, center rear.
After going “green” he
was given the mechanical black flag at T7,
again at start/finish,
and once again at T7,
before he finally made
a call to the pit lane. He
retired after completing
7 laps. On lap 9, polesetter, Mitch Marvosh,
#29, GT2, would retire
after contacting the
bank in T8. After 10
laps Dean Heller, #47,
SP, would also go back
paddock.

on for the win, completing 12 laps, with a margin
of victory of 27.377, over the top ITE of Ted Hill,
#84. Third overall and the SP class winner was
Bruce Trenery, #2. Anthony D’Alessandro, #99,
T2, got his checkered flag and finished 4th overall.
The only GTA was Rudy Peters, #64, who placed
6th. EP spoils went to the #57 of Ben Brandt. The
#15 finished more than half the race and would
receive his full points in AS.
Race 1, Group 6
SRF, SRF3
Twenty-five cars, including 10 novice drivers,
would close out the afternoon of racing. Then
the RAIN came, heavy! Mike Smith, #64, knew
he didn’t want to play, so he retired after one lap,
4/27/16
after he had an O/O in T11. Numerous cars also
suffered the same fate in the same turn. On lap 4,
in T3, Frank Valente, #4, novice, Tanner Briggs,
#95, novice, Parker Briggs, #6, and novice, Michael Woolley, would all mix it up. This brought
out the Safety Car, as well as the tow & rescue
trucks. The #4 & #6 would make it back to the pit
lane, done for the session. Seems the #6, spun &
stalled, while the #41, spun & slid into the #6. The
operating Stewards checkered the race at halfway
due to the inclement conditions, as the Safety Car
led the field down the pit lane and into the back
paddock.
Umberto Milletti, #34, won in SRF3, while Ed
Railton, #01, was the top SRF, in the rain shortened 5 lap event.

Race 1, Group 7
SMT, SSM, SM
Sunday morning saw 47 cars make the grid,
including 10 novice drivers. This one had a
very strange start, with four cars retiring before
completing one lap. Cole Gibson, #53, had body
contact with the #89 of Scott Carter, while Ross
Lindell would take his #95 back paddock prior to
the “green”, and Behram Soonawala, would retire,
suffering from a flat right front tire, pulling off on
the bypass road at T5. And the race had not even
started! On lap 3, in T11, Scott Wilcox, #9, went
into the tires, driver’s right, hard, just off course,
so the Safety Car was called into duty. (He might
have had help.) After the tow truck and #9 were
#50 Tupper Hull

#30 David Ray
in the pit lane we were back under green. It was
noted by T11 that the #93 of Nuno Goncalves
Pedro had body damage on his right front. Steve
Holifield, #44, S/C in T15, made a pit stop, and
retired after 6 laps. The #51 of Taylor Vance did
the same thing after 7 laps, and in the same turn.
Novice, Dan Azar, #02, finally parted ways with
his muffler, that was noted earlier as dragging in
T9, wound up in T14.
At in end of the 25-minute contest, Tommy McCarthy, #23, SM, would be the first to see the
checkered flag, 1.559 seconds ahead of the SMT
winner, Roland Kamber, #90. Both raced hard and
clean during the entire affair. David Allen, #61,
SSM, wound up ahead of Brandon Miller, #92, by
6.8 seconds to take the class win, finishing 11th
overall.
Race 1, Group 2
FA, FM, FB, FS, P1, P2, FE, S2, DSR,
ASR
The last race of the morning before going back
to qualifying saw a split start with the 28 car
field comprised of 13 cars in the first wave and
6 FA & 9 FM cars behind the pace car. Only one
novice driver was amongst them and he was a P1
contender. On the pace lap, Robert Fox, #94, DSR,
went off driver’s right in T10, and was deemed
“safe”. Also on that lap, Steven Rooks, FM, #57,
was slow through T8, made a pit stop, and retired.
T9 reported smoke from the #66, DSR, of Robert
Christensen, center rear. After the first lap, Ted
Arken was slow in T8, and took his DSR back
paddock. T3 then had side-to-side action between
the left of William Weaver, #67, FM, and the right
of, novice, Fritz Moore, #17. After 7 laps, the #66,
would finally call it a day. During the 15 lap event
there were a number of O/O & S/C by various
drivers.
No surprise in who took the checker first by a
one lap margin, you guessed it, James Devenport,
#23, P1! Second place, Rod Rice, #07, was the only
FB. Fourth place finisher, John Yeatman, #8, was
the sole FE. FA spoils went to 5th place finisher,
Carter Williams, #55, 5.1 seconds ahead of fellow
FA driver, Jonathan Sugianto, #24, while the
FA of Pierre-Paul Baradat, #14, was 2.4 seconds
behind the #24. Those
three put on one heck of
a race! Ninth place was
the P2 winner, Aaron
Bailey, #21, while Robin
Riner, #91, was the only
FS and finished in the
11th spot. Finishing 10th
was the winner in FM,
Stew Tabak, #28. The
DSR full points went to
the #88 of Andy Juner,
who came in 13th.

The first race Sunday afternoon had 38 competitors take the “green”. T10 had some action early
on, as the #81, ITA of Glen Cherry, attempted an
inside pass on the #43, ITA of Michael Olivier,
slid up in front of the #43, had an O/O on the way
to T11, where he parted with his rear bumper,
driver’s right exit. Just pass halfway T6 had Jeff
Wilcox, ITA, #26, S/C, while the #59, ITA, of
novice, Rees Todd, went O/O, evasive. On lap 7,
Ben Brandt, ITS, #57, went off in T14, making a
pit stop, and retiring. T10 reported he may have
had help from the #44 of Steve Holifield in his
ITA. (Late attempt at a pass.) Impound reported
no contact marks were evident. After completing 9 laps of the 13 contest, both the #07, STL, of
Tim Auger, and Nuno Goncalves Pedro, #93, ITX,
would retire.
Nunes, #79. The only
STU finished 6th and
was piloted by Bruce
Trenery, #2, his 2nd
win for the weekend.
Coming in 7th was the
winner in STL, Wilson
Powell, #77. The battle
in ITA was hot and
heavy the entire race,
but victorious in that
class was Tupper Hull,
#50, over Leeson Grant,
#03, by .9 seconds! The
2nd win of the weekend
for him also. Only 9 cars
were on the lead lap, as in ITX, David Allen, #61,
garnered his 2nd checkered flag of the weekend,
finishing 16th. Mike Cary, #58, was the ITS winner, placing 26th.
Race 2, Group 4B
FF, CF, FV, FST, F5, FC, FFTS
Eleven cars made up the field for the 14 lap event.
Again, Scott Vreeland, #51, FC, would lead from
the “green” to the “checker”. Only a couple of
incidents throughout the race. Just before the
“five minutes remaining” mark, Jeffrey Pietz, FC,
#80, S/C, in T11, and just after that the #52, FF, of
Manuel Leonardo, did the same in the same turn.
Scott had a 4.543 lead on fellow FC, #45, of Paul
Rodler. Ken Rozeboom finish 3rd in class and 3rd
overall. The best race was back in the FF ranks,
as Steve Meyer, #48, kept swapping positions,
back and forth, with the #50 of David Jalen, and
Scott Waracka, #22. In the end, a mere .2 seconds
separated 1st & 2nd in class, with the #48 taking
the win and the #22 in third. In CF, the #6 of
Richard McClosky, would take the win over Dan
Wise, #77, by 2.7 seconds. All three of the class
winners brought home 2 checkered flags for their
weekend’s effort. Congratulations!

SRF, SRF3
Eight Gen3 cars and thirteen Gen2 cars would
make up the field for the 13 lap event. Seems Bill
Booth, #57, 5th place qualifier, has a new multipage data system in his new Gen3 and coming
out of T15 on the pace lap inadvertently hit the
engine kill switch. (That won’t ever happen again,
will it Bill?) He did manage to battle back for a
6th place finish. The #32 of novice, Andrew Cook,
had his share of O/O & S/C, as he received, not
one, but two “Closed Black Flags”. T2 & T11 were
his favorite spots. Novice Parker Briggs, #6, also
had a S/C in T5, as well as one in T11. Novice, Any
Hettrick, #1, had his in T10. Not to be outdone
by little brother, novice Tanner Briggs, #95, also
had an O/O in T11. Novice, Chris McMillen, #24,
spun, off & on at the exit of T8 before all was said
and done.
Umberto Milletti, #34, held of the menacing #51
of Robert Breton, by 6.76 second to clinch his second checkered flag of the weekend in Gen3, while
laying down a new track record in the process,
a 1:59.461. (Umberto, any plans on stepping up
to a Norma?) Lee Douglas, #92, would finish 1.8
seconds behind Robert, for 3rd in class. In Gen2,
novice, Jeffrey Cook, #03, brought home the
bacon over the #60 of Ricky Lee, with a comfortable 8.2 second cushion. Hank Raymond, #12, was
only .6 seconds away for that 2nd spot, finishing
3rd in class.
Race 2, Group 7B
SMT, SSM, SM
The forty car field in the 12 lap event saw the
continuing battle between the SM, #23, of Tommy
McCarthy and the #90, SMT, of Roland Kamber,
netting the same results as their first race, finish
one and two and first in their classes. Both took
home two checkered flags each for their hard
fought effort over the weekend! Now for the
thrills and chills. At the dropping of the green,
Tim Auger, #07, and the #23, had side to side body
contact causing the #23 to spin. (It was called
“just racing”.) When it was all over, a total of
13 off & ons and 8 either spun and continued or
spun, off and on calls would be made, and yes, we
do keep count. (Thanks Kathie.)
Second in SMT and 3rd overall was the #54 of
Brian Cross, 3.7 seconds behind the #90. Just 1.8
seconds behind Brian was the 3rd fastest SMT of
Jared Higham, #40. In SSM, it was the Sharpie
car, #92 of Brandon Miller taking the win away
from David Allen, #61, by 4.6 seconds. They finished 13th & 14th. Third in the class was the #14
of Alan Gjedsted, finishing 16th.
Race 2, Group 2B
FA FB, FS, P1, P2, FE, FM, S2, DSR
For the second time this weekend, Group 2 had a
#23 Jim Devenport
#51 Scott Vreeland
split start. On the pace lap, the FA of Pierre-Paul
Baradat stopped on course in T2, restarted, and
stopped again in a hazardous area. There was a
“no start” as the tow crew was called upon, but
the clock started for the last 25-minute race of the
weekend. In T5, Ted Arken, #87, DSR, required a
tow and would also fail to take the green. Twentythree cars would be left as the green dropped.
Just after the halfway mark, Kevin Rogers, #16,
FM, had an O/O in T4. T5 had the #92 of Bruce
Carpenter high-centered, driver’s left, requiring
a “tow now” for his FM. Double yellows came out
and the Safety Car was deployed. Once on the racing surface, the #92 continued. Robert Fox, #94,
DSR, made a call to the pit lane and went back out
on course.
James Devenport, #23, would take his car from
the pole position to the winner’s circle in P1, in
the first wave. He was two for two for the weekend. Margin of victory over FB winner, Rod Rice,
#07, was 8.792 seconds. The #07 received his
second checker of the weekend also. Pole-setter
in the second wave was Jonathan Sugianto, #24,
FA, took the victory in class from Carter Williams,
#55, who won earlier in their first race. Margin
between those two was .2 seconds in the end, as
they had a fierce battle throughout the entire contest. Tao Takaoka, #27, was out of his Miata and
finished 3rd in FA, only .8 seconds behind Carter.
Coming in 7th & 8th and 2 for 2 for the weekend,
were Arron Bailey, #21, in P2, and John Yeatman,
#8 in FE. Also bagging double checkered flags
were Robin Riner, #91, in FS, as well as Andy

Borrow. It did finish the race on Saturday, starting 33rd, and finishing 25th.
The first of two MX-5 races at noon was fierce
throughout the entire field but had no issues.
The first of two Porsche GT3 Cup races took
place late Friday afternoon. After the completion
of lap 2, the GT3 Platinum classed car of Oscar
Arroyo from Mexico City, suffered a very hard hit
into the wall just pass Start/Finish, driver’s left.
Debris was scattered across the track, bringing
out the red flag, where the entire field would stop
behind the incident on the front straight. Again,
Rescue 1, Tow 1, and a rollback were dispatched
from Turn 11, as well as the Course Marshals.
Looking at the records it looked like Oscar qualified in the #89, JDX Racing machine but the race
results stated he was driving the #18.

The four-day event consisted of practice, qualifying, and races for the Battery Tender Global Mazda
MX-5 Cup, presented by BFGoodrich Tires, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama, Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, WeatherTech Championship (P/GTLM), and the WeatherTech Championship (PC/GTD).
Since our vendor, Tow World, had no available
Rollback tow trucks, three were contracted out,
including drivers. Not having my usual duties, I
donned my turn-outs to learn to be the secondary fireman on Bobby Heisig’s Rescue 1. Primary
fireman, and my “on-the-job” trainer was Dale
Hoag.
The weather on Thursday and Friday was cold
and windy but Saturday and Sunday turned out
to be sunny, with a slight breeze. The major
crews working the event were Flagging & Communication, Emergency, Social, Grid, Pit Fire,
and Worker Transportation.
The first practice session Thursday morning

would see action in the late stages when Max Faulkner, team McCumbee McAleer Racing, loss control
at the exit of Turn 4, backing his #84, Mazda MX-5, into the wall driver’s left. We responded, as well
as Tow 1, to block the scene until the end of the session, when a rollback would be called into action.
The Rumson, New Jersey resident was done for the weekend. The remainder of the day would be issue free.
Saturday had the second Porsche GT3 Cup race, the first race for the
Lamborghinis, and the second race for the Mazda MX-5 Cup competitors.
Excellent racing and everybody behaved themselves. Not one single major
call. There was, although, the usual tows out of the gravel under local yellow flags.
In dispersed between the races were more practice sessions and qualifying
for the other groups.
The major Saturday race was the 150-minute Continental Challenge with
both the GS, (Grand Sport), and the ST, (Street Tuners). Usually this group
provides a lot of beating and banging but as the Series season has just
begun, everybody played nice but raced extremely hard. The first caution
came out on lap 5 when the #54, BMW 228i, pulled off, driver’s right, under the Mother’s Bridge, just before Turn 5. The JDC-Miller Motorsports
machine was sponsored by Universal Coatings, and co-driven by Michael
Johnson, Austin, Texas, and Stephen Simpson, Cape Town, South Africa.
After completing 7 laps, the Porsche Cayman, #8, Rebel Rock Racing/Borla/Urban Grid, would retire. Co-drivers were Robin Liddell, Northampton,
England, and Elliott Skeer, Carlsbad, California.
The second caution came out on lap 58 of the 86 lap race, when the #7,
Porsche Cayman, went into the tires, driver’s right in Turn 8. The second
Rebel Rock Racing/Borla/Urban Grid machine was co-driven by Tyler
Stone, Homewood, Alabama, and Brian Leonard, Helena, Alabama.
On lap 76, the #37, MINI JCW, pulled into the hole at Turn 11 with a
mechanical issue. It was co-driven by Ethan Low, Clearwater, Florida, and
Mark Pombo, Berkeley Lake, Georgia. Sponsors were MINI USA/Voief.org/
St. Petersburg-Clearwater/Shopminiusa.com.
The remainder of the evening was four qualifying sessions for each of the
WeatherTech Championship classes. Dinner for the evening was pork
tenderloin, mashed potatoes and gravy, a broccoli/cauliflower cheese bake,
salad and dessert. (Track food never tasted so good!)
Sunday morning saw the second Lamborghini race, which was 50 minutes
in duration. We again were dispatched to Start/Finish on lap 31 of the 34
lap event, when the #17 pulled off driver’s right with a broken rear axle.
Out of the Beverly Hills dealership, Richard Antinucci and Brian Thienes,
would see their US Race Tronics machine loaded on the rollback and taken
back paddock.
The first two hour WeatherTech race would pit the Prototype cars, (P),
against the GTLM, (GT Lemans), cars. On lap 7, the caution came out due
to the #3, Corvette Racing, of Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen went
off course. On lap 23 the caution again came out when the #10 of Ricky
and Jordan Taylor mixed it up with the #5 of Joao Barbosa and Christian
Fittipaldi, driver’s left in Turn 10. The #10, Konica Minolta Corvette DP for
Wayne Taylor, would continue, but the Action Express Racing, Mustang
Sampling machine would require assistance from the tow crew.
Lap 35 saw the third caution, when the #70 stopped on track, driver’s left
in Turn 7. The Mazda Motorsports, Mazda Prototype, of Tom Long and
Joel Miller, would be pulled to the top of Turn 8 and released so they could
coast down the hill, ending their race. They were sponsored by Mazda/
Castrol/ModSpace. Eighty laps were completed.
The final race of the weekend saw the Prototype Challenge, (PC), cars
going against the field of GT Daytona, (GTD), machines. The only issue
during the late afternoon race happened on lap 35, when the #540, GTD
of Timothy Pappas and Nicky Catsburg, wound up in the gravel in Turn
5 without any brakes, ending their race. The Black Swan Racing, Papent.
com/Fine Arts Enterprises/Boston Athletic Club, Porsche 911 GT3 R, was
running strong prior the incident.
I would like to thank Nelson, John, and Oscar for preforming the duties of
Rollback drivers and providing their trucks. My next event will be Double
Regional #3/#4 at Thunderhill Raceway Park, May 14th & 15th. (Back in
the Announce booth.)
Thursday night James and Jodi provided the workers with Tri-Tip Chili, cornbread, salad, and mini
cupcakes. Just what we needed after a cold day on the track!
Mid-morning Friday qualifying for the Lamborghinis had the #51 go straight off Turn 8 and find himself in the tire wall, driver’s right. Again, Rescue 1, Tow 1, and a rollback would respond. Palm Beach,
Florida resident, Rob Hodes, DAC Motorsports, would start at the back of the field for both races if
repairs could be completed. He went on to finish 12th in race #1 and 13th in race #2.
During early Friday afternoon Continental Street Tuner qualifying, the #44 went into the tires driver’s
right exit of Turn 4, only to continue. The car was co-driven by Sarah Cattaneo, Scottsdale, Arizona,
and Owen Trinkler, Brentwood, Tennessee. It was a Honda Civic Si, team CRG and sponsored by I Do

Top times for Sunday looked like a throw back to
the 1980's. Can't remember a lotus being in the
top ten fast times since Rich Ursthel was driving
his now retired lotus élan.
Jarret and Bryan Nelson have brought their Lotus
Exiges down to run Mather Field a number of
times with at best mediocre results. They seem
to have got the Lotus sorted and drove it to 3rd
and 4th fastest times of the day 46.733 and 47.300
in SSP Rick Brown did a little sorting of his own
on the BP Corvette and drove it to second fastest
time of the day 46.511 in BP. Eric Smiley took his
Lotus seven to 5th fastest time in OSP 47.348.
There seems to be a resurgence in real race cars (I
can see the tires when I drive it) this year. Eric's
car is really a Motus...... Turbo Miata powered
seven. Lanny Bowden had his Hotus, Honda
motorcycle powered seven on site. He is trying to
sort it to run BM. Keith Kirkwood ran his Ford
powered Caterham 7.

Saturday morning weather was perfect for an autox. The Sacramento Chapter Board kick started
the registration process as the parking lot filled up, and I mean filled up. By the end of the day 193
drivers would complete their four runs.
This generated around $4,000 donation to the
Shriners Charity. Starting the season with the
Shriners Charity event has become a Tradition for
Sac Chapter. The funds donated over the past ten
years is a source of pride for all members.
Ken Yeo and Ray Miller wasted no time breaking
in the new tires on the bright yellow corvette.
Ken ending up with a 46.241 and the win in BSP

Oil Recycling Rocks
at Track Night in America
The ”Oil Recycling Rocks” Nissan 300 ZX will be on the scene at the Track Night in America
events on the new West course at Thunderhill Park in Willows at the 5250 Hwy 162 location.
The Sports Car Club of America, San Francisco Region, has partnered with the State of California to deliver a positive and high-energy message regarding the proper recycling of used oils
and filters as well as the use of re-refined oil products whenever possible.
Oil Recycling Rocks is the name of the program that will visit motorsports as well as high school
and other public assemblies using the race car as a means of getting past the usual barriers
to delivering a social-need message. “People love cars, especially colorful cars,” noted SCCA
President Dr. Gary Pitts of Nevada City. ”When the car shows up the eyes widen and those in
attendance listen as the race driver delivering the oil-recycling message goes into high-gear, ”
Dr. Pitts added.
For more information about the Oil Recycling rocks program call Shawn Campbell at Ross
Campbell in Sacramento on 916-446-4744. For information about the SCCA road racing program contact David Vodden at 530-934-5588 Extension 101. Admission to all SCCA road races
at Thunderhill is free.

THUNDERHILL REPORT
BY DAVID VODDEN
Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2016 SFR/
SCCA road racing championship series was a hoot. Over 170
entries made the fields on track
fun and challenging. There was some
pretty good racing too, which often happens when
drivers of like mind and class get together on track
to decide who, among them, is best. I think that it is
also important that our paddock facilitates interaction
among teams and that the Marshalls camp together
and everyone enjoys good bench racing. This is not
true at the other tracks where the paddocks are separated and groups get little interaction. The Club house
is a great meeting place too and is unique to Thunderhill. Having power to plug into and big shade canopies
for the non-motorhome racers among us, adds to the
overall enjoyment of a race weekend at Thunderhill.
And then there is the food. It is so superior to the other
tracks that Jim Thompson gets offended if someone
compliments his food quality by saying, “It is reallygood for race-track food!” It is simply more fun at
Thunderhill overall, in the paddock, on the track and
in the town of Willows where familiar hotel staff and
restaurant servers say hello and address you by name.
You know they appreciate your company and say so. It
makes you feel good, important and it is different than
at the other tracks. We have a playground. We have
a great agrarian back-drop and we have each other.
It does not get any better than this, anywhere. Meta
message; run all the races at Thunderhill Park from
now on!
The Club returns to Thunderhill September 23-25 for
rounds 11 & 12 in the 14-race contest to decide who
will be the class champions for the race-year. There
will be six races elsewhere before the Club returns to
Thunderhill but everyone will be waiting for September, either for the Club race at Thunderhill or for the
SCCA National Runoffs that just happens to be going
on at “Mid-Ohio”. That’s right, the next race here
at Thunderhill is on the same weekend as the SCCA
Runoffs. Don’t go to the Runoffs. Race Thunderhill
instead. Wait for 2018 when the SCCA Runoffs will
be at Thunderhill as part of our 25th anniversary
celebration! Our last weekend at Thunderhill had a big
NASA race at Laguna Seca where that group ran under
unlimited sound rules. We still had 170 entries but it
might have been even bigger if the scheduling gods had
smiled upon us. There is cross-over between NASA and
SFR/SCCA. I know. I am one.

JUNE 2016
The final race of the 2016-SFR/SCCA racing season will also be at Thunderhill on October 21-23. There is no endurance race listed in the schedule on
Sunday so it remains to be seen what the weekend race format will be. The
Club schedule does show that the awards banquet will be Saturday night the
22nd so Sunday remains a mystery. If you have any ideas for a race format
for this last race weekend of the year, please send it to me. Here are some
conversation starters: I would like to see us run heat races on Thursday
based on times with a slow heat and a fast heat for groups that have many
cars. This way the slow drivers get to have a stand-alone race with cars of
similar levels and the fast guys get a race together, just them, sort of a trophy
dash deal. I would line up the cars up on Friday by inverting the heat finishes
for a 15-minute race and then do a partial, three-row inversion for the final
championship race on Saturday. Then make Sunday into an all-day play-day
for anyone with a California driver’s license using an “open-track format.”
Because the banquet is Saturday night it isn’t likely that a Sunday race event
would work unless --------Hmmm ---- we made the Sunday event the first
points race for the 2017 race season and ran it just like a normal race using
short qualifying sessions combined with twenty minute races since 30 and
even 25 minutes are too long these days. I think I would switch to lap counts
like the rest of the world since timed races really do not fit the current cadre
of players, in my opinion. What do you say. Should we spice up the last race
with a format change for the first part and then mess with the Sunday offering? How about using the sponsorship money that Thunderhill provides for
the Club as a means of making the entry fee very low say, FREE to all drivers
that have run every race of the season up to $200 for those who have made
only one race and $250 for new-bees, first time entrants, in 2016. Another
idea would be to create a point fund with Cal Club and tie the race to their
Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships that is scheduled at Buttonwillow
the very next weekend – October 28-30. The money could be paid based on
points earned at both races such that the Cal Club drivers would be motivated
to come to Thunderhill and you all could get in another weekend of racing
with the potential for a cash payoff for earning the most points over the two
events. Both events might pick up drivers from the Pacific Northwest as well
as Arizona and Nevada. Two big events only days apart can justify travel time.
Then there is the idea that the Club finally run Thunderhill clockwise. No
reason not to. It is so different and fun and challenging in ways that make it
over the top for all that want to try something outside the box. Or we could
run the 5-mile. Or we could run the three-mile and the two mile simultaneously with sedans on the West and open wheels on the East or some version
of all that. The goal here is to make the last race of the SFR/SCCA 2016
racing season spectacular and unique in ways that attract attention and start
a “buzz”! Why not? Send your ideas to me at [email protected]. I
would also like all of you who have a business or simply care about what we
do to send me contingency programs. $200 for the driver of the weekend at
the SFR/SCCA season final! A free Race Craft seat to the winner of the Spec
Mustang title for 2016. Cases of oil from Red Line and others for the 2016
Spec Miata and the Spec Racer Ford [SFR] champions to be awarded at the
Saturday night banquet. $500 in product to the 2016 Rookie of the year, and
so it goes. I would like the Region to reinstate the “YEAR OF FREE ENTRIES” to a driving champion in 2016 who is selected from a pool of all the
driving champions and awarded the prize. We did it before and it truly does
give a metric to being an SFR/SCCA driving champion in a class. Think about
who you know and what you can bring to the table [literally] so that the yearend champions and/or winners at the last race of the season can experience
what it is like to be a part of a race club that really races and really takes care
of its own. Do it now. Please.

B SPEC
Brand new Mazda2 B-Spec build. Purchased new off the dealership lot in late
2014, stripped, and prepped for B-Spec
competition. Only 8 races on the car
with just over 1k miles so engine is just
broken in and will only get stronger. Roll
cage is an S-Box engineering kit professionally installed by Margraff Racing. Car
has the best of everything and is one of
the nicest B-Specs in the country right
now. Cobra Sebring Pro Fit seat. Schroth
Profi II belts. 5 pound, 4-nozzle integrated
fire system. Quick release Sparco wheel
For Sale: 1970 SCCA GT1 Corvette. Car
runs, handles, and stops as it should.
Prep level appears to be from 1980s
rule books. SCCA logbook says it ran
eighteen races including Nelson Ledges
and Road Atlanta in the late 80s. Clear Illinois title numbers match vin tag. Rollbar
tech numbers match SCCA log- book.
Tires are garage rollers only. Flares will
accept up to 12 inch wide rims. Engine
is an iron block 355 sbc with a Muncie
transmission behind. I am an autoxer and
not a road racer. I have no more history
than the logbook and a few old pictures.
