RHYTHM & BRASS, since its inaugural season in 1993, has lived up to the ideal of a
musical presentation that is not bound by time, geography, or culture. With the
unique ability to incorporate influences as divergent as Josquin Des Prez, Pink
Floyd, John Coltrane, Johann Sebastian Bach, and, of course, Duke Ellington,
Rhythm & Brass searches for the commonality in these influences and fearlessly
weaves them all into a single concert experience.
Rhythm & Brass, in addition to its standard concerts, has also performed at
numerous special events including a 1994 New York concert debut at Carnegie
Recital Hall with celebrated jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker. Commissions have been
premiered at Chicago's Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the
national convention of the Music Educator's National Conference. R&B has also
been featured at the New York Brass Conference, the International Trumpet Guild
Conference, the Raphael Mendez Brass Institute, Kentucky's Great American Brass
Band Festival, the National Trumpet Competition, and the National Association of
Music Merchants Convention in Los Angeles. Internationally, Rhythm & Brass has
concertized in Canada, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, the Virgin
Islands, and Thailand. R&B was featured at the 2010 International Trumpet Guild
Conference in Sydney, Australia.
Song & Dance (1994), the group's first CD on d'Note Records, is an immensely
versatile program of works from the 17th century composer Samuel Scheidt to the
World Premiere recording of “Dance Suite” by Leonard Bernstein, his last
composed work. Their second album, Time in September (1995), includes original
jazz compositions by R&B members and features award winning guitarist Gene
Bertoncini as well as a commissioned work by the Grammy nominated composer
Maria Schneider. Christmas Time is Here (1996) was hailed by the national press as
one of the most creative recordings for the holiday season. R&B's recording More
Money Jungle. . .Ellington Explorations (1998), on the KochJazz label, celebrates the
centenary (1999) of one of America's most significant composers and musical
ambassadors, Duke Ellington. The album was described by Entertainment Weekly
as "...smart and deliciously off-centered..." and was named by the New York Times
as "Album of the Week" (May 7, 1999). Rhythm & Brass has been featured on "BET
on Jazz" (Black Entertainment Television) performing several segments of the
Ellington album. Sitting in an English Garden Waiting for the Sun is an outrageous
salute to the British invasion and includes music by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and
Led Zeppelin. Rhythm & Brass most recently released Inside the Blue Suitcase
featuring original compositions from within the group.
The members of Rhythm & Brass maintain an active involvement in music
education. The group is often found at major educators conferences and in
residence at universities throughout the nation as well as summer music camps and
festivals such as Bands of America and the Brevard Music Center. After several
years of full-time touring together, the members of Rhythm & Brass have each
found a home in various university music programs: Charles Villarrubia (tuba):

Trombone, University of South Florida; and Wiff Rudd (trumpet): Professor of
Trumpet/Brass Area Coordinator, Baylor University.

CHARLES
VILLARRUBIA (tuba) serves as Associate Professor of
Tuba/Euphonium and Brass Chamber Music at The University of Texas at Austin.
Mr. Villarrubia is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a founding member of
Rhythm & Brass. He received his Bachelors degree in music performance at
Louisiana State University and Masters degree in music performance from Boston
University. He has been a member of the Dallas Brass, the Waterloo Festival
Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.
In 1984 he was awarded first prize in the T.U.B.A. orchestral competition, becoming
the first individual to win that award. In addition, Mr. Villarrubia frequently
performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra and
has recorded with the latter.
A staunch advocate of student involvement in chamber music, Mr. Villarrubia has
authored a chamber music method book called Team Play With Rhythm & Brass – a
guide to making chamber music. The book gives the student and educator a
blueprint on how to start and maintain a successful chamber ensemble.
He has also written articles on the subject and has been a guest lecturer at the MidWest Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Music Educators National Convention. Mr.
Villarrubia has premiered no fewer than five new works for the tuba, several of
which he commissioned.

Mr. Villarrubia has appeared on four continents as a guest clinician and performer
for the Yamaha Corporation and has recorded on the Telarc, Angel EMI, d’note,
Koch, Bear Claw, and Azadmusico labels. He has been a faculty member at Boston
University, Boston Conservatory, New England Conservatory, Longy School of
Music, and Interlochen Center for the Arts and currently spends his summers
teaching at the Brevard Music Center.
DAVID GLUCK (percussion) - Originally from Utica, New York, David currently
lives in the up and coming art haven, Beacon, New York, nestled along the banks of
the scenic Hudson River. Presently, he teaches at Purchase College, State University
of New York, as Assistant Professor of Studio Composition. As a founding member
of Rhythm & Brass, he has toured the world as percussionist extraordinaire and has
been acclaimed as a virtuoso mallet performer and drummer.
He has appeared as a featured clinician in hundreds of universities across the globe.
Many of David's compositions and unique, pastiche-like arrangements have been
performed and recorded by Rhythm & Brass, and his orchestral arrangements have
been played by multiple symphonies throughout the United States. Rapidly gaining
recognition as a distinguished composer, he has received numerous commissions
from various collegiate and professional ensembles with a most recent premier at
Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall.
He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College where he won the
first annual Louis Smadbeck Award in composition. After serving as a teaching
assistant at the University of North Texas, David toured with Dallas Brass for three
years before co-forming Rhythm & Brass.
Mr. Gluck received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Composition from
Purchase College where he was the recipient of the prestigious Alvin Brehm Award
in composition.
Mr. Gluck is a Yamaha, Zildjian, and Innovative Percussion performing artist. He
has recorded for d'note and Koch record labels, and his music has been featured in
Jazz Player magazine.
ALEXANDER SHUHAN (horn), Associate Professor of Horn, is also a founding
member (1993) of Rhythm & Brass. He is principal horn with the Cayuga Chamber
Orchestra and performs frequently with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and
the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He also performs regularly at the Skaneateles
Chamber Music Festival.
He has studied at Southern Methodist University with Greg Hustis, the Eastman
School of Music with Verne Reynolds, and the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard
School with Harry Berv. Other teachers include Marvin Howe, Nancy Cochran,
John Jacobsen, and Henry Babcock.
Mr. Shuhan is also an accomplished composer and arranger, having written a
number of works for Rhythm & Brass. His composition "Awakenings" is featured
on the most recent Rhythm & Brass recording entitled "Inside The Blue Suitcase."
REX RICHARDSON (trumpet) - Hailed as “An artiste with an exceptional talent
...one of the finest trumpet players in the world today,” (4barsrest.com) and “one of
the world’s most engaging and astonishingly versatile trumpeters,” (Style Weekly)
Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson was named the 2008 Brass Herald
Personality of the Year. A veteran of the renowned chamber ensemble Rhythm &
Brass, jazz legend Joe Henderson’s Quintet, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, the Brass
Band of Battle Creek, and appearances with countless celebrity artists in multiple
genres, he stays busy as a headline artist at international festivals and as a soloist
with orchestras, jazz ensembles, brass bands, and concert bands on five continents.
Renowned as a champion of new music, he premiered concertos by Dana Wilson,
Doug Richards, and Peter Meechan on four continents. Since 2010 he has premiered
Jim Stephenson’s Trumpet Concerto no. 2, “Rextreme” in Australia, South America,
the U.K., Europe, the U.S. and Asia.
Mr. Richardson’s solo recordings are released on Summit Records. According to the
ITG Journal, his 2010 release Magnum Opus “...without a doubt, puts Rex
Richardson among the very best trumpet soloists in the world today.” (Jan. 2011)
Mr. Richardson is professor of trumpet and jazz trumpet at Virginia
Commonwealth University and is currently Yamaha Artist-in-Residence at the
Royal Northern College of Music.
TOM BRANTLEY (trombone), Professor of Trombone, grew up in a musical South
Louisiana household, listening to classical, jazz, Latin, soul, pop/rock, country,
bluegrass, and Cajun.
A third-generation trombonist, Yamaha soloist, clinician, and recording artist, Mr.
Brantley performs with the USF Faculty Brass Quintet, Faculty Chamber Players,
Jazz Faculty Ensemble, the Jack Wilkins Jazz Group, and Chuck Owen's Jazz
SURGE. Mr. Brantley was awarded a USF Research Grant to fund a

trombone/trumpet CD recording project with colleague Jay Coble featuring a new
work, Confluences, by Chuck Owen. His most recent recording is a solo project,
Obsessed with Treasure. In the summer of 2007 he performed with and directed the
USF Jazz Ensemble at the Umbria Tuscany and Antibes Jazz Festivals in Italy and
France.
Trombonist for the chamber group Rhythm & Brass, he has performed in every
state in the continental U.S., as well as Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and
the Caribbean. The group has produced two recordings, a chamber music textbook
series, and was featured as the opening concert in the 2002 International Trombone
Festival.
Mr. Brantley has led master classes and performances at music conferences: the
International Trumpet Guild, the International Trombone Festival, the Florida
Music Educators Association, and the International Association of Jazz Educators.
He serves as the news editor for both the International Trombone Associate Journal
and Website. He is a founding member of the Central Florida Trombone Society, a
local affiliate of the ITA.
Mr. Brantley holds degrees in trombone performance/jazz studies from the
University of Southern Mississippi and the University of North Texas.
WIFF RUDD (trumpet) joined the faculty of Baylor University's School of Music in
2002 as Professor of Trumpet and Brass Division Coordinator. Prior to that, from
1998 through May of 2002, he was Associate Professor of Music at the University of
Arkansas, principal trumpet of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and a
member of the Boston Mountain Chamber Players. A San Antonio native, Mr. Rudd
received music degrees from Baylor University (BME) and the University of
Northern Colorado (MM). He served as Assistant Professor of Music at Oklahoma
Baptist University for seven years and performed regularly with the Oklahoma
Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Rudd toured internationally for eight years with the
Dallas Brass and is a founding member (1993) of Rhythm & Brass. An active
soloist, he collaborates often with orchestras and bands. He performed the New
York premiere of Joseph Turrin's Chronicles for Trumpet and Wind Symphony in
Carnegie Hall and has often been a featured soloist at the annual Mid-West
International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. He performed in 2005 at the
International Trumpet Guild Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, the Great American
Brass Band Festival, and at the Interlochen Arts Camp.
Rhythm & Brass serves as a primary performance outlet for Mr. Rudd. His R&B
experiences include extensive domestic tours and several trips to Japan, the Middle
East, Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The group has also performed as guest
soloists with numerous symphony orchestras, including Rochester, Grand Rapids,
Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Oregon, Tucson, and the United States Air Force
Orchestra in Washington, D.C. The group is described by Entertainment Weekly as
"...deliciously off-centered" and by the American Record Guide as "...nothing short
of stunning."
Mr. Rudd has performed in concert and presented clinics/master classes at more
than two hundred colleges, universities, and conservatories across the country, as
well as at the New York Brass Conference, the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, Bands
of America, the Brevard Music Center, the Great American Brass Band Festival,
MENC national and regional conventions, and the Music Educators Associations of
Georgia, Oklahoma, Montana, Minnesota, Florida, Iowa, Texas, and New York. He
also co-authored a beginning chamber music method called Team Play: A Guide to
Making Chamber Music Together (Universal Editions-1997) and has adjudicated for
the International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition Finals, the Louisiana Trumpet
Solo Competition, and the State Solo Contests of Oklahoma and Texas. An
honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Mr. Rudd is
also affiliated with Pi Kappa Lambda, the International Trumpet Guild, and the
Music Teachers National Association; he serves as an Artist/Clinician for the
Yamaha Corporation of America.
THE NORTHWEST IOWA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA comprises the finest
musicians in the tri-state area. Teaching principals are of a professional caliber and
function as first chair players and teachers in sectional rehearsals. The orchestra’s
80 members include adults of all ages as well as gifted music students ranging in
age from high school through college. Four of these students are recipients of
scholarships from Friends of the Symphony for the purpose of continuing their
private music instruction. NISO presents three concerts each season in addition to
the annual Concert for Children, which is given each November for 1,000 area 4 , 5 ,
and 6 grade students.
