Columbia Cemetery presented by: Cindy Mustard and Jeannie Rogers
A HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE
 In 1820 six blocks were dedicated for common burial ground.
 Because of haphazard care of the cemetery several community members petitioned the
state.
 On February 28, 1853 the Columbia Cemetery Board was formed in response.
 1837 - cold storage vault house was constructed. It stored bodies until the funeral was held.
 2000 - Funds received to restore vault house.
 1911 - Farley Mausoleum constructed.

 1873 - African-American section made. “Colored” section. The US colored infantry is buried
here along with J.W. “Blind” Boone. John Lange is also buried here. He was a very
successful Black man at this time. He established Cummings Academy. That school is now
Douglas High School. James T. Scott Memorial. Last person lynched
 1880 - six Jewish families bought an acre and formed the Beth Shalom Cemetery. Jewish
law states that they should be buried “set apart” from others. There is a barrier. It is a winding
road that separates the parts of the cemetery.
 2007 - Cemetery was named to the National Historic of Places designation.
 There have been over 12,000 burials. There is still place for 10,000 more.
 The Columbarium is the designated space for cremations. There is also a scattering garden.
