Program- Christopher "Kit" Salter
First, I don't get sick often, but by Friday night, there was no way
I could help in the kitchen. I want to thank Linda Owens, Cheryl
Field, Tim Popejoy, Janet Popejoy, Clay Austin, and Barrett
Glascock for covering in the kitchen on a night that they had other
plans. You saved us on a busy night of Bingo!
On the next morning, May 2nd, Bryan Chapman was kind enough
to take notes so that I could continue to improve. Most of the
following bulletin will be Bryan's wording, with some additional
information that I have received.
We had 158 players for Bingo on May 1st and a happy player took
home the $1,199 jackpot. Three horse races were sold and the
kitchen made almost $700. Speaking of the kitchen, the “Help
Wanted” sign is out for anybody who would like to volunteer.
There will be meeting on Sun. May 18th for anyone interested in
helping with the kitchen. Please come out and help!
Breakfast this morning was provided by Bern Bonderer, John
Travlos and Robert Blake.
Wednesday night Jessi Kendall represented the Club by handing
out scholarships at the High School Awards Ceremony.
Our speaker today was Jenny Grabner. Jenny is the executive
director of the Southern Boone Learning Garden. It's hard to
believe that the Learning Garden has been in existence for eight
years and they have grown and prospered (no pun intended).
They are a non-profit and their web site
is www.sblearninggarding.org
Each classroom in the learning garden has a row, and the garden
is up to 37 rows. Last year, over 300 pounds of sweet potatoes
were harvested and consumed in the school cafeterias. They work
closely with OPAA (OPAA is the firm who runs the cafeterias in
Southern Boone) to bring their produce directly into the schools
and they are trying to work with local growers in an effort both to
support local agriculture and to go right from field to the table.

Jenny’s salary and the salaries of two AmeriCorps employees are
paid through a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. The
grant runs through 2017, so the community has the next two
years to decide on a plan of action to find a funding mechanism to
keep things moving.
Next Saturday, May 9th, everybody is welcome to bring a Mom or
mother figure to breakfast. We only ask that you let Barrett
Glascock or I know by Friday of this week if you are bringing a
guest so that enough food can be prepared.
Linda Knierim and Carrie Fischer could have won the attendance
drawing but “Oh Boy” Marvin Bennett was glad to dance out the
door with the jackpot.
Please make sure that the Fishing Derby, scheduled for the
morning of June 13th is on your schedule. There are still plenty of
spaces to sign up to help with this wonderful program.
Also put June 27th on your calendar for the Bike Safety program
that we will be doing in conjunction with River Regional Credit
Union. Times and more information will be provided in the future.
