Big building rodeos are going full guns;
here’s what could happen.

Want to know something scary (in a good way)? Mary Walker had
the best winter building run of anyone in the WPRA last year – and
she had only earned $5,301 at this exact same time last year. This
time around, she’s already raked in $17,211 and is literally spanking
the rodeo industry by almost five figures. Sherry, bar the door.
Seriously, with a look back it’s easy to see that having a good
winter is crucial to a world-title dream. It’s not essential, as Michele
McLeod and Christy Loflin proved last year. But it’s a big deal.
In 2013, three other cowgirls had great winters in which they
banked more than $20,000 each. It might surprise you to know
that second-best went to Lisa Lockhart, who never enters enough
rodeos during the remainder of the year to capitalize. Then there
was Taylor Jacob, who rode her winter high all the way to her first
Finals. And of course, there was Sherry Cervi, who used a $20,000plus winter to help her win a fourth world title.
Here’s another indicator of the significance of the winter run.
Last year at this exact point, only five of the eventual 2013 NFR
qualifiers were even in the top 20. However, by late March when
all the dust had settled and the coliseums went back to hosting ball
games, 10 of the eventual top 15 were in place.
But here’s a glitch, too – nearly all of the gals who placed deep
at Odessa and Denver did not make the 2013 NFR. Same story at
Rapid City last year and Jackson, Miss., too, where only the firstplace winners seemed to go on to the bright lights of Vegas.
So what’s new for 2014? For starters, RodeoHouston is sanctioned.
As an open rodeo last year, Houston crowned Nancy Hunter the
champion and paid her $53,000. If it had been sanctioned then
like it is now, Hunter would have entered the NFR in 12th place
– just ahead of Jean Winters – with $74,717 in season earnings.
Then again, second-place Cervi would have been able to count her
$29,900, too.
That leads us to the question….who is eligible to enter rodeos
like this, anyway? As Fort Worth and Rapid City get ready to wrap
up, here is the breakdown on the limits and dinero up this winter.
Which qualifications do you think are most fair?
• Odessa (Jan. 3-11) added $8,000 and accepted all card- and
permit-holders. Winner Christy Loflin earned $4,813 this year.
• Denver (Jan. 16-26) added $35,250 and was limited to 108 girls
(20 from the 2013 Mountain States Circuit standings; 12 from the
2013 WPRA Tour standings; 11 from the 2014 standings on Dec.

• Rapid City (Feb. 4) Champions’ Challenge adds $16,000;
invites 10 girls and pays five places with first place earning $5,440.
Monies count toward the world standings.
Rapid City (Feb. 1-8) adds $10,000 and accepts card-holders only
with no limit. Britany Fleck earned $4,850 last year.
Jackson (Feb. 6-12) adds $10,000 and accepts all permit- and cardholders. Taylor Jacob earned $6,286 last year.
• San Antonio (Feb. 6-22) adds $150,000, charges no entry fee,
and is also a Wrangler Tour rodeo. Fifty girls can enter (5 from the
Jan. 14 standings; 43 from the 2013 standings and 2 from the 2013
WPRA Tour standings). Shada Brazile earned $16,866 last year.
• San Angelo (Feb. 14-28) adds $20,000 and is also a WPRA
Tour rodeo. Anyone with a card or permit can enter and run in
slack Feb. 10, after which 120 make the performances. Fun note –
they drag after every 5 in slack with big drags every 50. Mary Walker
earned $14,592 last year.
• Tucson (Feb. 17-23) adds $20,000. Eighty girls can enter (64
from the 2013 world standings and 16 from the 2013 Turquoise
Circuit standings). Cindy Smith earned $9,014 last year.
Scottsdale (Feb. 27) adds $16,000 to its separate Champions’ Challenge, in which 10 girls are invited and the winner earns $5,440,
which counts toward the world standings. The race pays five places

Rancher Relief at Black Hills Stock Show
Rancher relief is the central theme for several events at this
week’s Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D., at the
Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and James Kjerstad Event Center.
Livestock auctions, concerts, a rifle raffle, and a dance highlight
the rancher relief effort at the 56th annual stock show. “The Stock
Show is not possible without the ranchers,” Black Hills Stock Show
marketing and livestock coordinator Kadee Hande told the Black
Hills Pioneer. “We’re doing everything in our efforts to help.” All
proceeds are earmarked for the South Dakota Ranch Relief Fund.
The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, and South Dakota Sheepgrowers Association
established the relief fund to provide support and relief assistance
to the agriculture industry after winter storm Atlas devastated the

Wrangler Million Tollar Tour Schedule
`The 2014 Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin
Boots, schedule has been released, and includes 19 top rodeos,
which start this month in San Antonio, Texas, and run through
August. These same 19 rodeos combined to pay out a total of
$6,745,804 in 2013.

36 from the 2013 standings; 3 from the Jan. 31 Texas Circuit standings and 8 from the 2013 Texas Circuit standings). Carlee Pierce
earned $8,783 last year.
• Houston (March 4-23) adds $200,000 and the entry fees
are $500 – but the committee generously pays them. Forty girls
can enter Houston. They unofficially will include the past four
Houston champs (Sherry Cervi, Jody Sheffield, Lindsay Sears and
Nancy Hunter); the defending Canadian champ (Lisa Lockhart); the
defending Colorado Springs champ (Michele McLeod); the defending San Angelo champ (Mary Walker); the defending All American
champ (Victoria Williams); the top three from the Dec. 1 standings
(Pam Capper, Fallon Taylor and Brittany Pozzi); and the remainder
will include girls down to 38th in the 2013 standings if the committee doesn’t extend a handful of special invitations.
There are plenty of other great rodeos in Florida and Texas this
winter, and Michele McLeod has been taking advantage already,
having crept into second in the world standings while placing at five
small Texas rodeos. Victoria Williams, too, snuck over to Florida
and capitalized on the momentum she brought in from her big
$12,000 win last fall at the All American Finals. There are plenty of
fresh faces gunning for big money, from Cheyenne Kelly to Samantha Lyne and former NFR barrel racer Shelley Morgan -- but they’ll
have to get through the likes of Cervi, Lockhart and Jacob first.

Headin’ For Home
W
e were down in the arena the other day and Mike was
fixing a bridle for me. HE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT
MULTI-TASK! (And all the men said, “Amen”!).
I was standing right next to him just a visitin’ away and I reached
out and picked up our arena cat! I honestly do not know what the
heck happened but with the speed of lightning, she spun around
in my arms and fastened her claws into the wrinkles on my face!!!
Yeeeooow!
Now…..can you picture this?! Here I am STANDING NOT 4
INCHES from Mike with a cat hanging from my head making little
girl noises and trying really hard not to fling the cat off me! (It’s a
really natural thing to want to DROP the cat, but her claws are really sunk in deep!) My eyes are batting and I’m taking deep breaths
furiously thinking how I’m going to get her off!!! Mike is focused
on the bridle……oblivious to what’s going on RIGHT NEXT TO
HIM! I finally ease her up and she came unhooked….oh the urge
to drop kick her the length of the arena! I’m blotting blood off my
face and FINALLY Mike looks up, his job successfully complete
and says, “Wow, bet that hurt!”….oh the urge to drop kick him the
length of the arena!
Okay, so what does this have to do with our VERY GOOD
GOD! It occurred to me that Mike was NOT an ever present help
in my time of need!! But that is not the way God is. In Psalm 46:1
it says, “God is our refuge and strength, mighty and impenetrable to
temptation, a very present and well-proved help in trouble.” Amplified Bible.
Though this is not a serious event by any means, I want you to
know that no matter what you are going through, GOD WILL
NEVER LET YOU DOWN! He’s always there, closer than you
think. Nothing is too difficult for Him and you ALWAYS have His
attention! Enjoy Him!
