Pleased with the exceptional turnout, Barter increased the number of paid places in the main race from 15 to 25. However, only the top 15 places were eligible for the truck drawing as advertised. The truck winner was determined by two drawings. The first determines the division and the second determines the placing. In the event of a tie, riders go by the order of the results’ printout that randomizes the ties. For example, in 2D Brooke Catalani and Stepheny Womack tied with a 15.629 but Catalani was listed fifth and Womack sixth even though their money was equally split, and for drawing purposes Catalani was considered fifth and Womack sixth. Brooke Knetsch, who tied for tenth place in the 4D, was the lucky truck winner. Knetsch, a Pre-K to fourth grade writing teacher from Killeen, Texas, got the congratulatory call from Barter. Unlike previous recipients of such phone calls, Knetsch knew she won something, but was still left momentarily speechless when she was told she won the truck. Her only response—“No way!” Knetsch ran Sunday night aboard her new horse Streakin Nightsong, a 6-year-old gelding by Streakin La Jolla. “I bought him two weeks ago from Jana Riley,” said Knetsch, who will complete a Master’s degree in special education with an educational diagnostics certification this spring. “She did an awesome job with him. We’ve made better runs, but I guess he knew what it took to win the truck!” 1D Winner “It’s been a long time since I’ve won anything,” said 1D pacesetter Terra Bynum of Colorado City, Texas. It was her first run back on Maverick in over a month. After a hard summer run, she turned him out for a much-needed break. “I’ve been letting him rest,” explained the two-time NFR qualifier. “He’s the only horse I’ve got this year. He’s really fragile-minded, and I really thought he was ready to make more runs. I ran him a lot this summer and he really started to get a little frazzled. Honestly, this is the longest I’ve ever had a horse. He’s 9-years-old and I’ve usually sold them by now. RQHBA’s first ever Yearling Futurity Champion presentation was held immediately prior to the sale. Judy Phillips of Rozet, WY purchased a 2008 filly from Mailloux Quarter Horses at the 2008 sale. She showed the yearling filly during the 2009 Central States Fair to a $500 win. Plans are in the works for even more added money in 2010 and an aged horse futurity to celebrate the 10th Annual Sale. It was the third All American Futurity win for her trainer Paul Jones and the first for rider Ramon Sanchez. “We’ve had a super weekend,” said Jones, who won Sunday’s All American Derby with Inseperable. “It doesn’t get any better than this.” Runnning Brook Gal, by freshman sire Brookstone, was the fastest qualifier to the Ruidoso Futurity in her first start and placed second in the $625,000 Rainbow Futurity. Owned by her breeders, Chad Richards and A&C Racing, Roosevelt, UT, she was the only horse in the All American Futurity field to have qualified for all three Ruidoso Triple Crown races and now has earnings of more than $1.2 million. Even money favorite Love Samba, fastest qualifier to the All American Futurity and the Rainbow Futurity, where she finished fourth, was compromised by an awkward start and finished fifth. Second-favorite Runnning Brook Gal paid 9.20 for her win. The order of finish for the All American Futurity: Runnning Brook Gal, Shesa First Ratify, First Corona Call, Favorite Cartel, Love Samba, Swingin Daddyo, Winners Cartel, Gols Victory Pop and Jess So Sexy. She doesn’t want to breakdown her horse or bankrupt herself trying to make it to Las Vegas in December. Instead, she wants two healthy horses for next year’s run. Her backup and former futurity standout, Cadillac N Karats, is still recovering from injury and Bynum hopes to be back on her in December. “If it happens, it happens. If not, I’ll have two horses for next year. I want my horses to last in the long run,” she said. Bynum figured Waco was a great place to get Maverick rolling again, and, boy, did he roll. “The ground is great and I can let him roll,” she said. “That’s the deal at the rodeos, I can’t let him roll as fast because he might slip and get scared of the ground and not turn as good. I figured this would be a great place to bust him out.” Like many trainers who float between training colts and running rodeo horses, Bynum had a momentary lapse in judgment running in the pen. “I’ve been riding colts all month and all you do is shuck it between their ears and kick,” she said. “I had just ran my 4-year-old that I over-and-undered to the first barrel and had to kick every step of the way. I come around the corner on Maverick and shucked him his head. I got half way to the first barrel and thought ‘What have I done?’ I’m there and I should have been sitting down five strides ago. He got a little past it. When he does stuff like that and the ground’s good, he just comes back harder. I guess he thought he was in trouble. I honestly didn’t think it was that fast!” 2D Winner A borrowed mount carried Tammy Coward, Gatesville, Texas, to the 2D win. It was her first run back on Its Easy Dashin (“Bullet”) since she sold the gelding in the spring. “The horse I was going to run got hurt, so I called Katie Hall and asked if I could use him,” explained Coward, an equine chiropractor and acuscope therapist. He was started when I got him and I just started taking him to jackpots to season him. I ended up selling him even though I really didn’t want to, but everything happens for a reason.” Coward was little bit nervous about running Bullet in Waco though not for the reason you might expect. She wasn’t worried that it had been so long since she last rode him; she was worried that he wouldn’t stop in alley. BARREL RACING REPORT “When I ran him here last year, we had a little accident in the alley,” she said. “He wouldn’t stop and we had a little crash out back. This year I tried not to think about it. He worked really, really good. I was really proud of him. That was the first run I’ve made on him since I sold him. “I really want to thank Katie for letting me use him. This is her first year to go to college, and she got a full ride rodeo scholarship. I hope she does really well.” 3D Winner Amy Donaker made the long 11-hour drive from Deming, N.M., to run in Waco on Monday. The drive paid off in big ways with Donaker winning the 3D saddle and her son, Rocky, 8, placing in the 5D. “I ran a 16.110 and my son ran a 17.117,” said Donaker. “I thought we were both too fast so we packed up and left. We were about an hour down the road, watching the webcast when my husband, Clint says, I think I hear a 15.110. I couldn’t believe it. I started to panic. I knew my son was placing, but I’ve never won anything and just couldn’t believe it. I even questioned my time, thinking maybe I ran a 101 not a 110. I didn’t tell a lot of people because I wasn’t sure.” Only school the next morning kept them from turning around and going to pick up the very first saddle that Donaker’s ever won. Donaker was riding Ima Special Bunny (“Ima”), a 15-year-old gelding that her stepdaughter used to run. “I’ve only made three runs on him,” she said. “My first run on him was at a rodeo and I won it. I thought this is going to be easy because he’s totally automatic. My next run was at a jackpot and I hit two barrels. My goal at the WBR was to have three clean barrels.” Donaker collected $1,300, while her son picked up $300. 4D Winner A few years ago when Donna Horton went to her father and brother and told them that she wanted to start barrel racing, they looked at her like she was crazy. Though they did look through the family raised horses and find her a suitable prospect for barrel racing. Three years later, she’s won her first saddle at age 52. “I rode a lot as a girl and ran barrels at the local rodeos,” said the pediatric nurse practitioner. “I didn’t ride through college and then I was a rodeo mom for 18 years. I was a single mom with two teenage WBR Race For The Truck Continued on Page 8 SEPTEMBER 8, 2009 PAGE 7 WBR Race For The Truck From Page 7 boys. I hauled them enough that they earned full ride rodeo scholarships. They went to the National High School Finals twice and College National Finals once. They still rope in the IPRA and PRCA.” Now it was mom’s turn. “I needed something to do with my time now that I wasn’t hauling them,” she said the Stigler, Okla., native. “It’s a good mental and physical outlet for me because my job can be very stressful.” Winning a saddle was beyond, Horton’s wildest dreams. And, she did aboard a horse she trained herself. Drifting Gambler (“Clyde”), a 9-year-old double registered Paint and Quarter horse, was raised by her father Carl Brice and broke by her brother. “I brought him a long very slowly,” she said. “I thought about sending him to a trainer, but then I would have had to learn how to ride him. I spend so much time with him; we’ve really bonded. I probably spend 90 percent of my time away from work with him. I pretty much know every move he’s going to make.” While Horton claimed the saddle, Danni Tamburro and Loretta West also turned in 16.611 to sit at the top of the 4D. The WBR staff rolled the dice on behalf of each contestant and Horton’s 6 beat out Tamburro’s 3 and West’s 5. Each took home $1,000. 5D Winner Sheryl Dugan, Burleson, Texas, “has been chugging up the D’s” with her 8-year-old solid Paint gelding Rues Black Knight (“Ace”), and hit pay dirt in Waco with a 5D win. “I started out in what seemed like the 10th D and have been working my way up,” said Dugan. “It’s so rewarding. At the big shows, I tend to get nervous and make mistakes. This time I tried to ride relaxed and not hit a barrel. ” Dugan ran on Sunday night and was at home on the computer when she found out she won. “I had stopped watching at 350 because I thought that was it, no one was going to change it,” she explained. “I came back to BARREL RACING REPORT watch to see who won the truck and they announced it would be a little while longer, so I decided to check the results to see how my friends ended up. When I refreshed the results page and that 15.110 came up, I just started crying. I’ve been trying to win one of those saddles forever!” Dugan had tied with Crystal Barricklow with a 17.110. Each took home $600. Barricklow got the trophy buckle. “That $600 will help make an RV payment,” said Dugan, who provides production RV’s for movies and commercial shoots. “This year’s been really slow. I’ve been buying, training and selling horses all year to keep going.” 6D Winner Dlee Pickett, Johnson City, Texas, rode Girly Man to a 17.614 to win the 6D. She took home a saddle and $700. Frenchmans Jester and Peterson’s Plans Changed After her latest victory at Ellensburg, WA and the over $6,400 in prize money, young pro Jordon Peterson and her mount, Frenchmans Jester, are on course for a big showing at the NFR in December. Her latest winnings boosted her to over $67k on the year and the #7 spot in the WPRA NFR Standings. Jordon has turned a year where she planned to test the barrel racing waters into a huge year all the while only running her mount at between 40-50 rodeos. The Barrel Racing Report caught up with her to ask her a couple quick questions. BRR: What are you plans through the fall and going into the NFR? Peterson: I plan to go to Puyallup for the Justin Boots Playoffs and then hopefully onto the Justin Championship in Omaha after that. In between the two, I plan to run my futurity colt, Rebels Colours, at the Fizz Bomb Futurity. After Omaha, if I end up there, I will turn Jester out until sometime in November. Then I will get him back in and start getting him ready by going to jackpots with smaller patterns so I will be ready for the NFR pattern. BRR: What do you feed Jester? Peterson: I feed Nutrena Safe Choice, all the alfalfa hay he can eat, and Oxy-Gen GI Care to prevent ulcers and just take care of his overall health while I am on the road. It is nice to just have one supplement that covers everything. BRR: What kind of tack do you use on Jester? Peterson: I use the 3 piece twisted medium shank bit of Ed and Martha Wright as his bit. I ride my own saddle from Shiloh BARREL RACING REPORT Saddlery called The Contender and I use all Classic Equine pads and boots. We also believe strongly in running with no shoes just natural trimming. SUN FROST DOC’S JACK FROST SI 74, P-8.0 PRISSY CLINE FRENCMANS GUY BRR: Who is on your support team? Peterson: I would like to thank all my family and friends including Bill & Deb Myers for all their support and also for the genetics of Frenchmans Guy. Without those bloodlines none of this would have happened. My Dad & Mom (Chuck & Kristie Peterson) have been supporting me so much all year. My Dad has been entering for me and that is great, and they are both always just a call away whenever I need advice. I would also like to thank my clothing sponsor Renegade Ranch for all their support. It really takes a team effort and I have a great team! If you’ve sincerely asked God to forgive you, He has. And not only that, but He’s forgotten it just like it never happened. Yes, that’s what the Bible says. So if God doesn’t remember and keep bringing up your wrong doings, why should you? When you’re forgiven that’s the end of it! Don’t keep beating yourself up over what God has forgiven you for and forgotten. The Bible is full of men who committed heinous crimes and then turned to God with sincere repentance. They went on to serve God in awesome ways. Paul is just one good example. He persecuted Christians causing many to be tortured and killed. Yet, he submitted to God, was forgiven and then was a big factor in the cause for the Christian faith. Paul wrote much of the New Testament. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; all things have passed away and all things have become new. David was another man who committed grievous sins but who By Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) repented and God used him greatly and even said that David was a man after His own heart. Don’t think God can’t or won’t forgive you if you truly ask for forgiveness with a sincere desire to have a clean slate. Philippians 3:13-14 is a good chapter to read and meditate on. It shows the importance of forgetting the past and pressing on to greater things that God has for us. Take control of your thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5). You’re a new creation! You don’t have to remain in bondage to the past. God has forgiven you. Memorize 1 John 1:9 and say it whenever those ugly condemnations try to fill your mind. Cast them out and start living the abundant life Jesus died to give you! M ike Morrison and his wife Sherry are ordained ministers in their own non-denominational church in Gillette, WY. They also travel widely as circuit riders ministering over a large area of the western states.
