BARREL RACING REPORT - Fast Horses, Fast News since 2007 - Volume 3, Issue 25 www.barrelracingreport.com June 23, 2009 IOU Cash For Fuel Owes No One College National Finals Rodeo Casper, WY, June 14-20 Rachel Tiedeman - Junior @ South Dakota State University 1st round and short round winner, 1st in Average IOU Cash For Fuel has been paying his way to rodeos for Rachel Tiedeman for a while now. IOU Cash For Fuel, or Twister, has always been a special horse. Barb Nelson of Zimmerman, MN, who bred IOU Cash For Fuel, spent time to planning out the ultimate barrel horse. However, Twisters’ dam didn’t want to raise him so he was bottle fed which started the development of this special horse. When Barb’s plans changed and she went to sell Twister, Rachel and her Mom, Janet, stepped in and bought Twister as a 2 year old gelding. To this day Rachel and Janet are the only ones to do any riding or training with Twister, from breaking onto the 2009 CNFR Championship. By Rachel’s junior year of high school she had started running and winning on Twister and in 2006 Twister was displaying his big heart and willingness to please when the team swept the Wisconsin State High School title in barrel racing on their way to being the Horse of the Year in Wisconsin for 2006. When they headed to the college arena, they finished 4th in the region their first year in and since have won the Great Plains region both of the last 2 years. In fact, this year the pair won the region after having to sit out 3 rodeos and won the title Great Plains Horse of the Year! In 2008, Tiedeman and Twister finished eighth at the CNFR. That was just fuel for the fire. This year the pair swept the first round of the CNFR, tied for the short round win, and won the average to be the 2009 CNFR Barrel Racing Champion. IOU Cash For Fuel will probably never owe anyone anything. He leaves it all in the arena every time and a quick look at his pedigree shows that his ability is no surprise. He is by Dashing With Cash si 94 a son of First Down Dash (the greatest racing sire of all time with over $67 million in earnings to date) who is out of a Merridoc, Tiny’s Gay mare. Undefeated in eight career races, Streakin La Jolla won the 1988 World Champion Barrel Racer Lindsay Sound Of Summer Derby at Delta Downs. He was also a finalist in Sears Sustained a Fractured Left Leg the Firecracker Futurity(G1) and Firecracker Derby(G2). Streakin by Dwayne Erickson Calgary Herald - World champion barrel racer Lindsay Sears sustained a fractured left leg while leaving the infield during Sunday’s closing performance of the High River rodeo. The accident happened when her leg slammed into an outgate that had been partially closed. Sears managed to stay in her saddle until help arrived and she could be lifted off her yellow mare that she calls Hankey. She was taken to the High River hospital where the leg was partially casted and is now recovering at her parents’ home near Nanton. “The fracture is on the outside at the top of the fibula,” Sears said of the smaller of the two bones that run from the knee to the ankle. The horse was not injured. Sears said she will consult with a doctor today for a second opinion to determine if she if she can be fit enough to ride this weekend. She is scheduled to compete at Ponoka on Thursday, Williams Lake, B.C., on Friday and Reno, Nev., on Saturday, where she is leading both qualifying rounds and stands to win as much as $10,000. Her left leg is the one that comes closest to the barrels. “With the fracture on the outside of the leg, I’ll have to make sure I stay off the barrels,” Sears explained. “It should give me some incentive to keep the barrels standing.” She admitted the injury hurts, “but I’ve felt worse pain in my life. “If I get a positive feedback from the doctor, I’ll try a couple of practice runs here at home on Wednesday,” she reported. “Right now I’m hopeful I can ride this weekend and run at the Calgary Stampede next month.” Sears is third in the world standings with more than $45,000 in earnings and went into the weekend seventh in Canada. She was shut out at Sundre, High River and Wainwright riding her backup horses. She left her world champion sorrel mare Martha in Reno. Sears won the Calgary Stampede barrel racing last year and went on to have an astounding $437,000 season. She was the second high profile Alberta rodeo contestant to be injured on the weekend. Streakin La Jolla Dies JUNE 12, 2009—Streakin La Jolla, 24, who became the racing industry’s all-time ninth-leading sire, died yesterday morning at Granada Farms near Wheelock, Texas, of heart-related problems due to old age. He was pensioned earlier this year. Bred by the Frisco, AQHA Past President B.F. Phillips Jr. and Delbert Smith, the son of Streakin Six was out of the winning Raise Your Glass (TB) mare Bottom’s Up. She is also the dam of the stakes-placed Bottoms Up Jet and Toast To Thinkrich. La Jolla retired with earnings of $56,227. From 18 crops to race, he sired 722 winners from 1,084 starters and the earners of $21,457,492. Those include 73 stakes winners, 86 stakes placers world champion and Streakin Sin Tacha ($692,842), champion and leading sire Mr Jess Perry ($687,184). Last year Streakin La Jolla was represented by the earners of $1,090,468, including 72 winners, five stakes winners, ranking him the 26th-leading sire of earners and tying him as the 14th leading sire of winners. In 2009 Streakin La Jolla has sired the earners of $542,521, including Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity (G2) winner Streak N Attitude ($142,708) and John Deere AQHA Classic winner Heart Streakin ($87,696). Robert and Karen Nunnally of Roberta, Georgia, have owned the stallion for the past 10 years. Courtesy of www.StallionESearch.com Reichert Injured in Canada Maegan Reichert was also seriously injured recently in Canada when her horse, Marvin kicked her. We understand she was flown back to Texas for medical attention. Maegan is in our thoughts and prayers.....we hope for a speedy recovery!! Courtesy of www.WPRA. com. Record-setting prize money at National Finals Steer Roping There will be something old, something new, something borrowed and something green in the vows exchanged by the PRCA and Lazy E Productions this fall. The big news is the green -- a record $255,000 in prize money that will be offered for the 51st annual National Finals Steer Roping, including an $18,972 payoff to the winner of the average title. It had been earlier announced that the event would have a new name – the Clem McSpadden NFSR, to honor one of the event’s greatest supporters – for its return to its old home at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Okla., after a decade at other venues. The year-end championship event featuring the 15 best steer ropers in the world, will be held Nov. 6-7, a date borrowed from tradition. The NFSR has been a fixture on the first full weekend of November for several years. The Oklahoma state Legislature unanimously passed a resolution earlier this year to change the name of the event, to honor McSpadden, who served for many years in the Oklahoma Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives while also building a reputation as one of the best announcers in rodeo history. He worked the NFSR a record 27 times, taking his last turn in 2000, the last year the event was held in Guthrie. Tracy & Dusti Swan • Crawford, NE • 308.665.3970 Subscriptions: www. Dashing With Cash displays a similar pattern of breeding as Dash Ta Fame, a perennial leading sire of barrel horses. They are both sons of First Down Dash out of Tiny’s Gay line mares. The dam of IOU Cash For Fuel, Agile Fuel, displays the blood of both Duck Dance (TB) and Oklahoma Fuel, which come up in many of the pedigrees of the arena performers of the last couple decades. In fact, Oklahoma Fuel’s close up ancestors include performance producing great such as Jet Deck, Three Bars, Leo, Hank H, and King. Like many performance horses, a closer look into the pedigree reveals that very few top performers were mistakes. Tiedeman is a junior ready for her senior year of college next fall and she has been accepted into the Nursing program at South Dakota State University. This summer she and Twister are going to make a run at the Badlands Circuit rodeos. This is definitely the situation with Jaymie Leach and her winning mare Kimeki Kash (aka Meeka). Meeka was a 3 or 4 year old when she was dropped off with the Leach family to be trained for barrel racing. She had come from the bush tracks in Utah and was ready for her next career as a barrel horse. After riding Meeka for a while the Leachs tried to contact the owners and send her back but were unable to get in touch with them. When the owners did contact them they were ready to sell Meeka. The Leachs’ tried and tried to sell the mare but couldn’t get even one person to give her a look. As time went on she improved on the barrels until they just decided to buy her themselves. Then Jaymie’s Dad, Jim, successfully futuritied Kimeki Kash which led to her rodeo career that has continued up to today. Jaymie and Meeka won 2 State High School Championships in Oregon, was in the top 8 at the National High School Finals Rodeo and also won the barrels and Rookie of the Year title for the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association in 2006. Jaymie, a junior at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, has made it to the CNFR each of her 3 years in college. The duo just missed the Top 12 their first 2 years prior to winning the West Coast Region in 2009, winning the 2nd round of the CNFR and ending up second in the average by a measly 0.07 seconds. JET DECK FAST JET 95 DASH FOR CASH SI 114 HOT KISS SI 110 91 TEXAS DANCER (TB) TEXAS MUD PAC SI 76, P-9.0 MUDDY PACIFIC SI 84 Kimeki Kash is an own daughter of Jet View si 104 and out of a granddaughter of Dash For Cash and Texas Dancer. With all of that breeding it is no wonder she took to the barrels right away. Many of you may remember Jet View is the sire of View This Jet, a tough open and rodeo horse which carried several different riders to many prestigious title, and many other offspring that have won in the arena and carried on the Jet Deck performance to the rodeo arena. On the bottom side Dash For Cash is of course one of the most common lines found in the performance arena and racing and Texas Dancer (TB) which shows up consistently in performance bloodlines. Leach is currently trying to finish a degree in Elementary Education in her pursuit to be a School Counselor. For the summer, she plans to give Meeka a little break and then her and her mother, Terri, will hit the road to pro rodeos and see where Meeka takes them. PAGE 7 CNFR Continued From Page 1 Haley Nelson - Freshman @ South Plains College 3rd round and short go winner, 4th in Average If you look closely at the results from the 2009 CNFR you will quickly see why Haley Nelson wishes it was another week long! After uncharacteristically blowing by the third barrel during the first round run, (stopping the clock in 15.12 landing her near the bottom of the heap) Nelson and her mount Senor La Jolla (aka Oscar) came back with a vengeance winning 3rd in the 2nd go round. They went on to win the 3rd round and tied for the win in the short go to make a come from behind charge to 4th place in the average. Haley and her mother Kelly Garrison purchased Oscar (Streakin La Jolla-Linda Lobo, Six Fols) as a 4 year old and another Dean Miracle horse at the Heritage Place Sale. Oscar was purchased from Robert & Karen Nunnally who coincidentally owned Streakin La Jolla. Haley and her Mom have brought Oscar along all the way. He competed as a futurity horse with some success and then slowly transitioned into rodeo life. When Haley was a freshman in high school, Oscar got the call to be the pole bending horse and then after her junior year he became her full-time barrel horse. During Haley’s senior year of high school she won the Region 1 pole bending and barrel racing title on Oscar along with the 1st round title at the Texas State High School Rodeo Finals. Along with their success at the 2009 CNFR, the pair recently won a run at the D&G Barrel Race in Stephenville, TX. Oscar (Senor La Jolla) is by the recently deceased Streakin La Jolla who was one of the most distinguished sons of Streakin Six. Of course Streakin Six has been a very successful paternal grandsire of barrel horses for over 20 years. Also, Streakin La Jolla has is the sire of Mr Jess Perry and the grandsire of Feature Mr Jess who are both starting to make their marks in the barrel arena as well. It should also be noted how successful Streakin La Jolla was as a racehorse sire, year after year one of the most consistent producers in the racehorse world. In fact, he was the sire of a winner of a $1 million dollar race (Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos, CA) on the same weekend as Oscar was ripping up the CNFR. All in all Streakin La Jolla has sired over $21 million in race earners. Haley is currently pursuing general studies at South Plains College while she finds her career of choice and plans to try to get to some amateur rodeos and big barrel races over the summer months. FMI: frenchmansirish.com Jerry Biscone @ 970-420-6298 PAGE 25 Headin’ For Home “L et us run with patience the race that is set before us...” That’s a good scripture to remember so you can proclaim it in times of stress, frustration or boredom. Read the entire Scripture in Hebrews 12:1-2. Every day isn’t fun , exciting or profitable in the world. So often people feel bent down under the daily grind of making a living and raising a family. At those times, the “joy of the Lord” is needed. Hebrews 6:12 tells us not to become sluggish but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. The promises of God are awesome! Don’t you wish your horses could live by that Scripture? Many times when you’re waiting your turn to run the barrels, your horse will act up and get impatient with all the noise, crowds, flags and all the other horses. You’d like your horse to have patience. You might even lose patience, too, when the arena isn’t in the best of condition and things aren’t running efficiently. That’s a good time to recall the above Scripture. Remember there’s Someone bigger than you in control. Even if you don’t like the circumstances and the way things are going, there’s a good reason why things are the way they are. Ask God for direction and wisdom. If you’re born again and believe that you’ll go to live in heaven for eternity when you die, why not trust God to take care of things in your life now for the next 40-50 years? That’s nothing compared to eternity. Just praise God and be thankful for all the good things in your life and “run with patience the race that is set before you”.
