WHAT IT IS
Organization Mandate
The work of The Ottawa Mission can be witnessed every day in
the lives of the individuals that we help. Whether it’s providing a
place to sleep, a meal, or offering job training, The Ottawa
Mission changes lives every day. From its inception in 1906, The
Ottawa Mission has been propelled by Christian spirit. Our
founders were motivated by the desire to help those who do not
have the resources to help themselves, and this same spirit
continues to guide us today.

Key Programs & Services for Job Seekers
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Job Training - Services that help people who are homeless explore career options, create resumes, and develop interview
skills to facilitate transition back into the work force. Eligibility Criteria: Homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Food Services Training Program - Offered in partnership with Ontario Works, a 5-month
program that teaches men and women how to cook in a commercial kitchen. They learn
first-hand in a working kitchen how to prepare and present a variety of meals and spend
the last few weeks of the program in job placement.

Custodial Skills Training Program - Developed in partnership with the City of Ottawa and
the Ottawa Catholic School Board, this 8-week program includes classroom and on-the-job
training. 13 out of 15 students in the first class found employment. Includes certificates in
First Aid/CPR—Level A, WHMIS, Essential Skills Certificate.

Stepping Stones Learning Centre - Students complete their high school education or postsecondary programs through online trades training. They have great partnerships in the
community with places like St. Nicholas Adult High School, George Brown College, ACE
Online Learning and the Independent Learning Centre. Additionally, they offer French
courses and a Social Skills Streaming Workshop.
Eligibility Criteria: Homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Discovery University - A partnership between The Ottawa Mission, University of Ottawa,
Saint Paul University, and First Baptist Church; allows people living on a low income to
participate in non-credit, university-level Humanities and Social Sciences courses at no
cost. All textbooks and course materials are provided at no cost. Courses begin in late
September and late January and run for ten weeks.
