ADVISORY COUNCIL
FOR
THE
MATH
AND
SCIENCE
The Math and Science Bureau at the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) currently
has openings on the Math and Science Advisory Council (MSAC). We are seeking 6 council
members and alternates from the following areas:



public schools (math and science teachers and administrators with math and science
curricula experience);
private sector, including the national laboratories, museums and science-and-engineeringbased businesses;
public post-secondary educational institutions with expertise in Mathematics or Science
education;
These council members will be appointed for the current fiscal year. And will start at time of
appointment. Terms are four years. Alternate council members will be appointed for one-year
terms. I am requesting that you forward this email announcement to anyone you feel may be
interested in serving on the MSAC. As a stakeholder in the STEM industries, your input is very
valuable for the strategic planning for the future of math and science education in the state.
Background
The creation of the council is required by state statute at 22-15E-4 and 22-15E-5 NMSA 1978.
The council’s purpose and duties are as follows:
 Make recommendations to the Math and Science Bureau and the PED regarding the
statewide strategic plan for improving mathematics and science education
 Advise the bureau, the PED, and the legislature regarding appropriations for math and
science education, administration, resources and services, including programs for
students and staff
 Work with the bureau in determining the need for improvement in math and science
achievement of public school students and make recommendations to the PED on how to
meet these needs
 Produce an annual report on public elementary and secondary mathematics and science
student achievement to be submitted to the PED, the governor, and the legislature no
later than November 30 of each year

The MSAC is a very important facet of our continued work toward the end goal of improving STEM
education in New Mexico.

reasons for applying to serve as a council member and describing the unique contribution
or skills you can offer to the council
 Resume or Curriculum Vitae (including participation in relevant, professional
associations)
