General Information - San Diego Chargers
Mike Nowak GENERAL INFORMATION Earlier this year, the Chargers' family lost two of its members with the passing of Ernie “Big Cat” Ladd and Ernie Wright (inset). The 6-9 Ladd, who played defensive end for the Chargers from 1961-65, was one of the most-feared pass rushers in NFL history. Wright, an offensive tackle who stood at 6-4 and 270 pounds, was an original Los Angeles Charger, playing with the team from 1960-67 and again in 1972. He was a three-time AFL All-Star and a member of the 1963 AFL Championship team. 2007 NFL REGULAR-SEASON SCHEDULE WEEK 1 Thursday, September 6 New Orleans at Indianapolis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5:30 p.m. Sunday, September 9 Denver at Buffalo . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. Pittsburgh at Cleveland . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. Philadelphia at Green Bay . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. Kansas City at Houston . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. Tennessee at Jacksonville . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. Atlanta at Minnesota . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:00 a.m. New England at N.Y. There was a significant increase in restroom capacity at the stadium, with the number of women’s facilities almost doubled and the men’s restroom capacity increased by 33 percent. San Diego Stadium was originally built in 1967 as a home for the Chargers at a cost of $27 million. It was dedicated at a Chargers-Lions game on August 20, 1967, before a crowd of 45,988. The 1997 renovation marks the second major facelift to occur at the stadium. Originally built to a capacity of 52,000, the stadium was expanded in 1984 to increase seating capacity to 60,100. The most recent renovation increased the seating capacity at the stadium to 70,000. The team played before its first-ever sellout crowd on December 3, 1967, when 52,661 turned out to see the Chargers battle the Oakland Raiders. Last season, the Chargers played before the biggest home crowd in team history when 68,537 fans filled the stadium for a Monday Night Football game against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. GENERAL INFORMATION Qualcomm Stadium, the stadium that the Chargers have called home since 1967, underwent an expansion in 1997 that included the addition of 11,500 seats, a club level, 37 new suites and a new west-end Jumbotron screen. The centerpiece of the renovated stadium is the Chargers Club level. Chargers season ticket holders who purchase seats on the former loge level of the stadium enjoy amenities exclusive to Club members. The 7,800 Club seats are wider, padded and come equipped with an attached drink holder. To enhance the Club experience, members have wait service at their seats, featuring a menu complete with a variety of food specialties. Members also enjoy the comfort of four fan-friendly lounges where they can relax in an air-conditioned setting before, during and after the game. Restrooms on the Club level also have been upgraded. The former Jack Murphy Stadium was renamed Qualcomm Stadium after the Qualcomm Corporation contributed $18 million for naming rights. Additionally, the total number of parking spaces at the stadium was increased to 19,000, including 461 handicapped spaces, making the parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium Photo: Mike Nowak 410 General Information TRAINING CAMP AT CHARGERS PARK On Dec. 16, 2004, the Chargers announced that beginning in 2005, training camp would take place at Chargers Park, the team’s year-round training facility that opened in 1997. There was also a white strip on each shoulder that had a dark blue bolt outlined in gold. The Chargers road jersey was white. It had Collegiate blue numbers on the front, back and sleeves outlined in gold. There were white lightning bolts on the sleeves outlined in gold. There was also a Collegiate blue strip on each shoulder that had a white bolt outlined in gold. The pants were white and had a dark blue lightning bolt outlined in gold running down each leg. Owner Barron Hilton chose lightning bolts because he associated a “Charge” of lightning with a lightning bolt. He also liked the bolts that were on the helmets of the Air Force Academy football team, but wanted something slightly different, so he had the “Chargers Bolt” designed to be different and placed them on the uniforms. 1967 The gold bolt is placed back on the helmet with a blue outline.
