Perry County 4-H’ers Speak-Up at Communications Day!
The day of District 2 4‐H Communications Day started out raining and dreary, but there was a big, bright spot that day! There was the fabulous involvement of youth giving interesting speeches and educational demonstrations! The 4‐H Communications Program is designed to give kids the opportunity to enhance their skills in public speaking and listening. ‘When a former 4‐H member is asked, "What did you gain through 4‐H that has made the most impact on your career success?" the skill most often mentioned is public speaking.’ The champions of each county in district 2 event are invited to participate in the district events. The district champions from across the Commonwealth gather at the KY 4‐H Communications event at University of KY on July 11th to determine the state 4‐H champions in each category. In Perry County various youth speakers are also invited to represent the 4‐H Speakers’ Bureau by also giving their speeches to various Civic Clubs. This year both Crystiana Couch and Mason MacAlarnis were invited guests of Hazard Lions Club and Hazard Kiwanis Club, respectively. “It’s not the winning….it’s the DOING!” Congrats to ALL that learned anything! Including me. These FFA/4‐H’ers need to know hands‐
on, boots‐on‐the‐ ground concepts in Soil science, Water quality, Wildlife, Forestry, and Current issues. This year the current issue deals with Urban Forests. These youth will be headed to the regional event on April 25th at the Berea Farm. The team is Dakoda Colwell of Busy, Ryan Turner of Viper, Tyler Johnson of Hazard, Matthew Lewis of Busy, Kalib Jones of Bulan, Austin Howard of Bulan, and Katlynn Campbell of Busy. On the right, the PCCHS FFA/4‐H team visited the East KY Raptor Rehabilitation Center located at the Letcher County Extension Service and staffed by Mitch Whitaker. 2
Above: Mr. Mink pulls a soil core for team members to determine topsoil depth and feel the soil texture. Right: team members must determine the tree species by bark, leaves, or fruit as well as determine number of boardfeet as determined by DBH and number of logs. Left: Dakoda and Katlynn work with water testing to determine pH levels in the creek. The team is hoping to advance to the State completion that will be held in May at the Kentucky 4‐H Leadership Center in Jabez. Good Luck, team! RWC’s 4-H Club is EGGceptional!
The 4-H’ers in Ms Jennifer Reynold’s club seem to have a good
time this month as they learned to make a delicious, nutritious
snack using hard cooked eggs. This is an after-school club that
helps provide hands-on activities for the youth to explore many
different areas.
“We love the making and eating class!”

Viper Elementary at the 3rd Annual 4-H Leadership Summit
Buckhorn State Resort Park is a wonderful place to hold a Retreat…and that’s where the 3rd Leadership
Summit was held for the entire 8th grade of Viper Elementary this year. The young teens work on concepts
of leadership of teamwork, communication skills, and character education. The youth and the leaders alike
seem to enjoy the interactive classes….and the Park’s food!
Each year the young teens (7th and 8th graders) that are trained to implement the conflict resolution
program called “Talking with TJ” are invited to participate in the KY 4-H Teen Summit for their age
group. Viper Elementary participates in this program. This year Viper sent nine young teen leaders to this
state event. Of these two were 8th graders – Daekwon Craft and Jody Caudill. These two assisted with
the implementation of the Viper Leadership Summit. Below one team demonstrates the parts of a machine
that work together. Top right: Daekwon teaches the tie-tying skills he learned at KY Summit. Bottom left,
team struggles to complete a task with a laissez-faire leader! Bottom right, Success! This 4-H Summit is
sponsored by GearUP and requested by principal, Ms Delilah Sue Brashear!

4-H Livestock Notes
 From the UK Extension Associate for Youth Livestock Programs, Mr. Steve Austin: As we get ready for Swine, Goat and Sheep validation, just a few reminders: Individuals need to have paperwork filled in and signed off on by all parties needed. Individuals need to have completed their six hours of training. This one is very important: NOTE: THE ONLY animals that will not be required to be delivered to one of
the predetermined validation sites are market hogs that originate from and reside on legitimate swine farms
which operate as closed herds. In these limited cases, the exhibitor’s supervising County Extension Agent
or Vocational Agriculture Teacher should contact the acting director of the Division of Animal Health,
Kentucky Department of Agriculture to arrange a time when the validation process can be conducted on
the farm. The validation process must be completed by no later than May 16, 2015. The exhibitor’s
supervising County Extension Agent or Vocational Agriculture Teacher and a representative from the
Division of Animal Health must be present during the farm visit. The visit must follow any biosecurity
protocols the swine farm currently has in place. 
The Kentucky 4‐H Rabbit Show held at the KY State Fair has adopted the Texas Showmanship Guidelines. Go to https://4‐h.ca.uky.edu/rabbit for more information.
