Polk Agriculture Summer Internships We are looking for two interns this summer to help support local farms, assist with gardening projects, help with education programs, and working on outreach at farmers’ markets. Local food is an exciting place to work and no two days will be the same. Qualifications: Polk County High School Student – Rising Sophomore, Rising Junior, or Rising Senior for School Year 2015-2016 Able to work 18 hours per week at flexible times including Saturday mornings. Position lasts 8 weeks starting end of May or early June. Pay is $8 per hour. Able to work outside in all conditions and able to use basic garden equipment including lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds. No previous gardening or farming experience required. Good work ethic and endless initiative. Able to follow multi-step instructions and work independently under guidance. Job Description: Interns will be expected to assist in maintaining the community & demonstration gardens located at the Mill Spring Agricultural Center, several county locations, and the elementary schools garden programs. Community learning gardens provide the opportunity for visitors to embrace new ideas and have the ability to take those ideas and implement them at home. Interns will cultivate, harvest, and maintain these gardens. Interns will prepare educational signs and materials at these gardens to help guide and educate visitors. This will require research and understanding and proper presentation of ideas for maximum impact. Interns will assist AmeriCorps members with summer gardening lessons for children. Outreach duties will consist of assisting with farmers’ market demonstrations and activities that expand the knowledge of consumers about local and healthy food. Interns will assist with Groundswell Project and its maintenance. The Groundswell project would be the installation of a community permaculture garden in a local community.
