Principal’s Message - Mr. Seiveright
“Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our true potential.” Winston
Churchill
Just when you thought spring was never going to
come, as it snowed in the middle of April and you
wondered if you would need your snowpants
through June, the beautiful weather has hit. May
is always a time when we get outside for learning,
physical activity, and play, and this year looks to be
no different.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Aladdin –
what a show! Months of hard work culminated in
3 stellar performances, and everyone involved can
be very proud of their accomplishment. A school
play is one of those events that will stay with a child
long after he or she has left Polson Park.
Now it seems as though athletics have taken over
the extra-curricular focus. Our two basketball
teams both had first-game victories, and continue
to practice as we head towards our tournaments
this week. The running club has started, and
track and field will happen this month as well.
The level of participation and positive energy is
great to see throughout the school.
Spring also brings a renewed focus on the
environment. We had a great Earth Day last
week, complete with our annual Pitch-In event to
clean up our yard and the surrounding parks.
Everyone did a great job to make our school
community look beautiful for spring. Later this
month we will be having our annual Gardening
Day. Look for more info about this event later on
in this newsletter.
This week is also Education Week in Ontario. This
year at Polson we are celebrating our
achievements in math, and continuing our efforts
to move forward in this area.
Thanks again to all parents and community
members for your feedback and questions. I can
always be reached at [email protected] or at
542-5926.
Track and Field and Running
Our Running Club has started again, preparing for
the LCVI Road Race later this week, on May 6.
Thanks Mme Martha Ms. Jarbeau, Mme Valikoski
and Mme Connie for your work with the team.
Later this month, on May 13, our grade 3-6
students will compete in our annual Polson Park
Track meet. Students will challenge themselves
in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long and triple
jumps. Our top athletes will then move on to our
Regional Track Meet on June 2 at the Invista
Centre, and possibly go from there to the District
Track Championships on June 8.
Good luck
Panthers!
EQAO
Our grade 3 and 6 students will be taking part in
the province-wide EQAO assessment this year from
May 25 to June 5. This consists of several math
and language assessments over 3 days. During
the testing we ask the whole school to be as quiet
as possible, and to limit distractions such as late
arrival and early pick-up. EQAO allows parents to
gauge their child’s progress against Provincial
Standards, and is a tool used in school-wide
planning to assess our strengths and next steps as
a school. We use this information along with
Report Card Data and other teacher assessments
to build our School Improvement Plan in coming
years.

Come help our Garden!
Once again this year we are planning a day to clean
out the garden at the west end of the school. Last
year’s garden day was a great success, and we
hope for as much participation this time around.
This year’s garden day is Saturday, May 9. An
information notice is going home with this
newsletter – please complete it and return it to the
school if you are able to join us.
Proper Footwear
Parents are reminded to send children with proper
footwear, even in the warm weather. Flip flops
and sandals can be dangerous when children are
running on the pavement, and are not suitable for
the gym. Running shoes are the best choice for
school, even when it is warm outside.
Math Corner
Take advantage of math in the world
Every day is a great time to learn how math relates to the real world. Math is everywhere! Take advantage of the
many great opportunities to practice math naturally! Below are a few ideas to get you started:
