Catalog May June 2015 Art Upfront Marius Budu Marius Budu is a visual artist working with photography and digital art. He is currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark. His stunning way of expressing the essence of the human condition has captured the attention of art lovers worldwide. This has ensured him exhibitions at galleries in countries like The United States, Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Romania as well as earning him praise from cultural publications and art communities alike. Marius Budu’s photographs are strong and focused, with few details supporting the clear impression of one thought or emotion. Through his unique use of light and shading, the pieces create structure and emphasize the sparse, yet vivid colors. The photographs are driven by his fascination with the human body as a raw material for art: Sculptured, twisted and focused on the minute details, revealing its inherent individuality. The photography plays with the viewer’s expectations of composition and motif – often portraying only ambiguous parts of the body, letting the viewer wonder or simply absorb. Susan de Witt Susan’s interest in photography started in the year 2000. After a number of years perfecting her darkroom printing skills, she decided to take a course in Lith printing and has stayed with that medium ever since. She found that Lith provides her with an ethereal and gauzy outcome that she had been unable to achieve using traditional darkroom techniques. With the decline in lithable papers now on the market, she has begun printing her original prints no larger than 8X10, so as to not, waste what valuable papers she has left. For larger prints, she scans the original to make differing sizes of archival inkjet images. “Susan de Witt uses photography, not as many do to record and reproduce what the camera sees, but to produce very personal images from her imagination. Her photographic prints may be built up from more than one view of the same object or by combining different subject matter to produce a final result that is greater than its constituent parts. The surreal overtones in her images play both to the subconscious and to the imagination, telling us not what to see but inviting us to see in them what we find. Her choice of the lith printing process to produce her multiple images presents her both with real technical challenges due to the nature of the process and significant aesthetic advantages as the distinctive visual properties of the lith prints produced in this way further removes her imagery from the realism of conventional photographic reproduction.” Tim Rudman, Photographer, author and the world’s leading authority on lith printing.
