We truly appreciate Wayde Peronto for allowing us to use his studio grounds. There are numerous outside areas to utilize, and with shooting starting in the afternoon and continuing until dusk, there will be many opportunities to photograph in various lighting conditions. Please plan to attend this hands on shooting event with mentors available to help and guide you with a variety of posing and lighting techniques. What a great way to get pumped and motivated for the upcoming, busy, summer season. For those of you who attended the May meeting with Art Miller...thank you! I'm sure you learned not only technical information but inspiration as well. I look forward to seeing all of you on June 4th. And bring a friend (or two) to join in the fun! Happy Spring! Shirley Duenkel President NOTICE TO MEMBERS Please email the newsletter editor, Tegan Olness, ([email protected]) any PPA awards won or earned from the upcoming PPA judging; or image files from prints that may have won awards or merited at PPA judging. WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • JUNE 2012 • VOLUME 35 • NUMBER 2 4 Southeastern Wisconsin Professional Photographer’s Association A MESSAGE THIS MONTH’S FROM PROGRAM THE PRESIDENT DISH TO PASS SHOOTOUT June 4, 2012 Bring Your Camera! This is a live shootout. The purpose is to learn by doing… with the aid of the mentors. Bring Food! Everyone attending will need to bring a dish to pass. The main course and drinks will be provided. Food sign-up on the SEWPPA website upon registration. Note: If your dish needs to be chilled YOU must bring a cooler. Bring a Folding Chair (to sit while you eat) We need 7-14 models (No models we’ve used in the past… we want new models each year!) We want someone others would WANT to photograph. In other words, ask your most attractive subject to be a model for a day. We’ll have all NEW models for this year! To register your model, contact Fuzzy Duenkel. [email protected] (262)338-2779 Note: Although we may think our kids, grandkids, pets, are cute… try to be objective and ask yourself if others TRULY would want to photograph them. So, I would suggest avoiding the temptation to bring a relative just because they are easy to get! We’ll need a “high school-ish” senior girl and senior guy, child, couple and family. (No pets.) Whomever you bring as your model, this will be a long event. We want there to be a good selection of subject types, but just be sure that your model will be able to handle the ordeal! What Clothes Should the Model Bring? Bring pretty, fun, and interesting clothing! Models must bring a selection of outfits so that we have choices. If you’re not sure what to wear, call Fuzzy. There WILL be Mentors We’ll have master photographers who’ll be stationed at different locations sharing what they know on a particular style of lighting. Thank you to everyone who participated in last year's Live Model Shoot. We received over 600 images from our photographers. It was a very educational experience, both in photography technique and group collaboration. Here's what our Facebook friends had to say: “Thank you for putting on a wonderful photo shoot today. This is the kind of group that challenges and inspires my creativity and further understanding of the science of light." “Great event today at the SEWPPA "Dish-to-Pass"! For those who made it; thanks for making it such a successful event! Photographers; models; mentors and everyone else!!! For those who did not make it; we missed you!!! Next year will not come soon enough!” "It was a wonderful event indeed. The models and mentors were outstanding and I'm so glad that I was able to participate as a photographer!” WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • JUNE 2012 • VOLUME 35 • NUMBER 2 7 Southeastern Wisconsin Professional Photographer’s Association MAY BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES Rick Bate, Secretary The meeting was called to order by President Shirley Duenkel at 12:55 pm. Webmaster Report: Mike Sohns The website will be shut down after the June meeting for reconstruction. We will keep in contact through emails and Constant Contact. Regional Representative: Shirley Duenkel There is a meeting coming up. There will be a report after the meeting. Correspondence: Amy Gaerthofner sent a thank you note for our hospitality during her program in April The meeting was adjourned at 1:11 pm WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • JUNE 2012 • VOLUME 35 • NUMBER 2 8 Southeastern Wisconsin Professional Photographer’s Association A MESSAGE THE RETURNFROM OF IMAGE THE PRESIDENT COMPETITION Jim Schoonover, ICE/Print Chairperson There were 22 images entered at last month's competition. 8 of these images received a score of 80 or higher and blue ribbons, while the other 14 received red ribbons. Mike Sohns received Print of the Month with his 81 scoring image entitled "Sphere With Ovoids". This was the first judging of projected digital images and it was well received. Based on the PPA calibration guidelines of a white point or brightness of 120 on a monitor, many of the images appeared too light on the screen. A lot of the entrants were surprised at that because their images were much darker on their monitors at their studios. That’s probably because most normal calibrations for our labs making prints have a much lower brightness calibration, somewhere in the mid 90’s. We need to set a “digital competition” calibration for our monitors of a brightness of 120 in addition to the darker calibration we use daily for evaluating images we send to the labs. The next competition will be at our September meeting. More details to follow. I was able to attend the nLightn Tour in Milwaukee a few weeks ago thanks to the scholarship. The two-day event was hosted by Pierre Stephenson, Michael Mowbray and Dan Frievalt. The first day was very instructive with each mentor presenting tips, tricks and information about their style and business. Pierre was the first to present and discussed techniques for photographing subjects in low light without flash, best practices for using ambient light, and using LED lights. He also went over his thought process for every shot and showed us the minimal amount of gear he brings to a wedding. Michael was up next and went into great detail on speedlights and how to get the most out of them. He spoke about achieving portrait lighting in every shot and using high-speed sync to kill the sun. Dan was the last to speak and presented information on his version of off-camera flash, his thought process and tips to add variety to a series of images. He also presented a few video clips that were very entertaining. All of the hosts were very open about their information and willing to answer any questions that were asked. The second day was hands-on shooting with each mentor. We broke up into three groups and rotated with each mentor. My group only had five people, which was a perfect size for this type of training. My group started with Pierre and tried to find darkness at lunch time for him to show us his low-light techniques. In my opinion, Pierre was the best instructor of the three. He made sure that my group understood everything and that we were able to try out techniques that he uses daily. There were five or six of us photographing at once, but my group was able to pause and take turns very well. The next mentor that we worked with was Dan and off-camera flash. We took turns trying his off-camera flash technique. We also experimented with natural light and reflectors. Dan provided less instruction and struggled a bit more with the lighting than the other two, so we spent more time working with natural light and figuring things out. WWW.SEWPPA.ORG • JUNE 2012 • The final mentor was Michael and my group wanted to test out his high-speed sync. This was hard to do since it was late and we had very little sun to work with. It was also hard since only one person could be photographing at a time. I was able to get two shots from the entire time that I was working with Michael. I think one or two people in the group did not get a chance to photograph anything. Michael had a few ideas of things that he wanted to photograph and took control most of the time. This was a different approach and he explained his techniques and setup very well, but it would have been nice for us to practice these techniques. It was also getting colder and later, so this session was cut short. I would have liked more time to work with Michael since he has a strong background and understanding in off-camera flash. Overall this was a great experience and very educational. I would change at least two things before they offer this program again. The first thing that I would change is the agenda to better fit the needs of the group and the day. The second thing that I would change is working with the models. Each of the groups had two or more models, so many of them sat around waiting to be photographed. This was the first time this program was offered and may account for some of the negative things. It was also quite cold and windy, so a million thanks to all of the models who braved the weather in summer clothes. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. 2 Creativity is the external expression of the imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought. 3 Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other, or it can have a negative effect when they are at odds. 4 Composition is important to the design of an image, bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts the viewer to look where the creator intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker. 5 Print Presentation affects an image by giving it a finished look. The mats and borders used should support and enhance the image, not distract from it. 6 Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest. Occasionally there will be no specific center of interest, when the entire scene collectively serves as the center of interest. 7 Lighting — the use and control of light-refers to how dimension, shape and roundness are defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is man-made or natural, proper use of it should enhance an image. 8 Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image. 9 Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image in which the tones work together, effectively supporting the image, can enhance its emotional appeal. Color balance is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect. 10 Technical excellence is the print quality of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting and correct color all speak to the qualities of the physical print. 11 Technique is the approach used to create the image. Printing, lighting, posing, film choice, paper selection and more are part of the technique applied to an image. 12 Story Telling refers to the image’s ability to evoke imagination. One beautiful thing about art is that each viewer might collect his own message or read her own story in an image.
