Playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax. Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets. Pet owners over age 65 make 30% fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets. Where do people get pets? MLC 2013 are the current issued Guidelines The groups consulted included: • British Veterinary Association • Cats Protection • Chartered Institute of Environmental Health • Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) • Dogs Trust • Federation of Companion Animal Societies • Feline Advisory Bureau (now International Cat Rescue) • Local Government Association • Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association • Pet Care Trade Association (now Pet Industry Federation) • Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund • Reptile and Exotic Pet Trade Association • Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Special thanks also to: • Peter Scott – Zoo and Aquatic Veterinary Group/Companion Animal Welfare Council, William H Wildgoose – Fish Veterinary Society/Midland Veterinary Surgery, Ian Strachan – Scottish Government, Wood Green Animal Shelters, OneKind Pet Industry Federation & The Pet Industry Federation is an approved centre for CITY & GUILDS Land based qualifications Pet Store Management is the Level 3 Qualification for Pet Shop Owners & Managers The qualifications covers : • Identification and management for small mammals , dogs & cats, reptiles & amphibians, aquatic species, pet & aviary birds, sources of supply and selling procedures for a range of different species • Reviewing animal health and hygiene problems • Outline pet trade legislation in relation to companion animals & the workplace • Management systems within a pet store environment selling livestock Pet Industry Federation additional support to pet shops • Every PIF member signs up to the PIF charter – the charter covers areas such as staff training, environmental impact, practising the 5 Welfare needs and promoting responsible pet ownership • PIF is about to launch a “gold standard” for those few shops that still sell puppies and kittens. The standard requires an audit and safe guarding on animal source, animal age and impulse sale. It is not illegal to sell puppies and kittens but PIF wishes to ensure it is undertaken to the highest welfare standards. • Shops acquiring the “gold standard” will be broadcast as the only pet shops the public can purchase puppies from safely. Pet Industry Federation additional support to pet shops • Although MLC’s are good, Pet Store Management qualifications help in knowledge, PIF is also launching “bite size” on line courses for pet shop employees and anyone involved in the care and wellbeing of companion animals • These courses will cover the following taxa and have been put in place to augument the 2013 MLC’s: • Rabbits, Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Gerbils, Birds, Snakes, Dogs/ Puppies, Cats/Kittens, Aquatics, Amphibians, Chelonians, Degus, Chipmunks, Rats, Mice, Chinchillas, Lizards, Ferrets In conclusion LICENSED PROVIDE ADVICE TO THE PET OWNER 3200 Pet Shops + circa 1800 other outlets (garden centres etc) 58% licensed to sell animals PET SHOPS QUALIFIED to C&G LEVEL 3 INSPECTED SUPPORTED BY THE VARIOUS PET TRADE ASSOCIATIONS GAIN FURTHER KNOWLEDGE FROM MANUFACTURER S & SUPPLIERS VISITED DAILY BY THE PUBLIC SO TRANSPARENT
