COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE FOR SERGEANT PETEREDWARD LEWIS 1100 HOURS 13 MAY 2015 DERRICK GARDENS CENTENNIAL PARK A commemorative service will be conducted for Sergeant Peter Edward Lewis in the Derrick Gardens Centennial Park on Wednesday 13 May 2015 commencing at 1100 hours to mark the 47th Anniversary of his death in Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam on 13 May 1968. Peter was born in Geraldton, WA on 11 Aug 1943 and after a short time in Adelaide settled in Cummins, SA. After enlisting in the ARA at the age of 19 he was posted to 3 RAR at Enoggera, Qld. and moved with the Battalion to Malaya in Jul/Aug 1963 from where he saw active service on the Thailand/Malaya border and Sarawak, Borneo March to July 1965. On returning to Australia 3 RAR moved to Woodside, SA in October 1965 before moving to South Vietnam in December 1967. By then Peter had risen to the rank of Sergeant and was the Platoon Sergeant of 11 Platoon On 12 May 1968 3 RAR flew in and secured Fire Support Base Coral before moving north to a defensive position. It was during the occupation of that defensive position at dusk on 13 May 1968 that Peter was fired upon by the enemy and fatally wounded. As a mark of respect to Peter service and ex-service members attending Peter’s service are requested to wear decorations and medals.
