Assistant Professor THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN Department of Biomedical Engineering Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology The University of Texas at Austin [email protected] http://research.bme.utexas.edu/stachowiak/index.html RESEARCH OBJECTIVES The vision of my lab is to reverse engineer lipid membrane function as a route to understanding cellular physiology and constructing clinically translatable materials and systems. The health of cells, tissues, and organisms relies on communication of biochemical instructions across membrane interfaces. Perturbation of membrane structure and organization play a role in diverse diseases. Through quantitative molecular-scale measurements and the design of biomimetic materials, research in our laboratory aims to understand the physical basis of cellular membrane organization and develop systems that engage in transmembrane communication with cells. Responsible for developing and directing a program of original research in biomaterials and biophysics. Responsible for mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral appointees, and undergraduate researchers; teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels; serving the scientific community at the local, national, and international levels. 08/08 – 12/11 SENIOR MEMBER OF THE TECHNICAL STAFF SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES, LIVERMORE, CA As an independent researcher, reconstructed lipid membranes from component parts and applied advanced imaging tools and physical principles to observe and interpret their behavior. Led work that revealed a new mechanism for lipid membrane bending that relies on spatial confinement of protein binding to membranes. Initiated internal and external collaborations with biologists, chemists, engineers, and theorists. Supervised students and postdoctoral researchers. Developed successful original research proposals. 08/05 - 08/08 GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHER, Supervised by Professor Daniel Fletcher DEPARTMENT OF BIOENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Developed microfluidic systems for delivering drugs and mimicking cellular encapsulation in lipid membranes. Jeanne C. Stachowiak, Ph.D. • • Designed a piezo-electric driven microfluidic jet injector device capable of needle-free transdermal drug delivery. Optimized injector performance using fluid-dynamic modeling and performed in vitro and in vivo testing to demonstrate transdermal delivery. Developed a microfluidic method for precisely encapsulating biochemical solutions within lipid vesicles. Demonstrated universal solute encapsulation in monodisperse, unilamellar vesicles formed by this method, creating new opportunities for biochemical reconstitution and bio-inspired drug delivery. 07/04 - 09/05 MEMBER OF THE TECHNICAL STAFF SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES, LIVERMORE, CA Designed and tested an autonomous microfluidic system capable of preparing bacterial cells and spores collected from air for identification by capillary gel electrophoresis. 08/02 – 07/04 GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCHER, Supervised by Professor Arun Majumdar DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Fabricated an array of micro-cantilever sensors using a multi-mask clean-room process and chemical surface functionalization strategies. Used sensor array to investigate DNA hybridization mechanics and detect protein-protein interactions relevant to early cancer detection.
