Morial Convention Center La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom, Second Floor MARSH SESSIONS AT RIMS Incorporating Risk Considerations into the Capital Budgeting Process 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. RIF004 Dan McGarvey – US Power and Utility Practice Leader [email protected] Capital budgeting is the art of allocating scarce capital in order to generate the best returns as defined by your organization’s strategy and mission. Every enterprise unit seeks capital investment for growth with only so much cash to go around. Investments in risk management are often hobbled in this process. Their returns may be limited, difficult to quantify, or achieved only over a long period of time. In addition, often left out of the equation are the risks associated with the other investment options. In fact, what may appear to be a no-brainer investment could turn into a disaster without appropriate consideration for its risks. Elevate your role in the process by incorporating risk elements into the capital budgeting plan. 6 | Marsh FYI Guide | 7 When Bad Stuff Happens: Best Practices for Managing Brand-Killing Claims 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. CLM026 TUESDAY 4/28 John C. Discover the priorities senior executives place on various risk management and insurance issues, both domestically and internationally. Employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) claims continue to increase in number. You implement risk mitigation controls to prevent claims from occurring, but what happens after the claim is made and EPLI is implicated? Better define your role in mitigating EPLI losses and learn strategies that can help you reach favorable claim resolution with your insurer. At times, risk professionals may not be included as significant players in this planning flow. You can, however, become an integral part of the strategyexecution process. Is it better to be late to the process than not involved at all? This session is hosted by RIMS Strategic Risk Management Development Council. FYI Guide | 11 WEDNESDAY 4/29 The Healthcare Senior Risk Professional’s Guide to Survival Industry Session 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. IND016 RIMS Registration 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Lobby A/B1 Bonnie Boone – Senior Vice President, National Brokerage Northeast Region [email protected] Marsh Cafe 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Ernest N. Morial Convention Center La Nouvelle Orleans Ballroom, Second Floor RIMS Exhibit Hall Hours 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Marsh and Marsh ClearSight Exhibit Booth 1321 MARSH SESSIONS AT RIMS Every health care chief risk officer expresses concern over three issues: mergers and acquisitions (M&As), litigation, and acquiring physician practices. First, consider the $52.9 billion in health care M&A in the last quarter of 2013. This should have you asking: What does this mean for the health care clinically integrated system and how is M&A exposure rolled into my organization? Then, determine if recent class action suits jeopardize your organization’s integrity and when you should notify senior management about litigation. Finally, see whether relationships from physician practices acquisitions provide better access to care and increased revenue but also more regulatory exposures. Address these issues to help your organization rest easy. Public Entities Industry Session: Risk Management Issues and Strategies 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. IND009 Regulatory and Tax Impact on Global Programs: How to Avoid Unbudgeted Costs 10:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. GRM010 Jean Demchak – Global Education and Public Entity Leader [email protected] Praveen Sharma – Global Leader, Insurance Regulatory and Tax Consulting Practice [email protected] Join members of the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) in a discussion of the biggest risk management issues that public entities face. Examine best practices and peer-determined topics, including: cyber risk; workers’ compensation; working with your police force; educating elected officials on the importance of risk management; reputational risk; and incorporating community outreach. When structuring global programs, you need to understand the regulatory and tax parameters within which insureds and insurers operate. This is not always easy with often ambiguous insurance regulations open to interpretation. In addition, tax authorities are taking proactive measures to generate tax revenues, auditing global programs, and denying income tax relief on premium expense and tax claim payments. Avoid unbudgeted costs by adopting a disciplined approach to structuring global programs. See what you can do to ensure a greater degree of compliance. 12 | Marsh FYI Guide | 13 Assessing Third Party Administrators: From RFP to Stewardship 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CLM001 Destination Independence: The Road to Self-Administration 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Annette L. Sanchez – Claim Consulting Practice Zone Leader, Marsh Risk Consulting [email protected] Annette L. Sanchez – Claim Consulting Practice Zone Leader, Marsh Risk Consulting [email protected] Plot your way on a roadmap of the process, road bumps, and outcomes of changing third party administrators (TPAs). Explore important elements of a request for proposal (RFP), system requirements, TPA use of third parties, fee transparency, and a specimen scorecard for evaluating performance. And learn how to ensure seasoned claims professionals are assigned to your program. This session is hosted by RIMS Central Ohio Chapter. How wonderful would it be to self-administer workers’ compensation and liability claims? You could focus on reducing costs and improving your program. True, self-administration can be great, but the road there is not always smooth. Using the recent transition to self-administration at Publix as a case study, work through the challenges, including technology, staffing, regulations, the litigation environment, and carrier relationships. Review a multidisciplinary approach, involving risk management, IT strategy, corporate compliance, and human resources as well as a consultant. See how careful planning, strong communication, and flexibility smooth the road bumps of the self-administration transition.
