A Positive Force
Isn’t it interesting that, right in the
middle of this season of Easter joy, the
church focuses our attention on the suffering of the messiah? The prophets announced long ago that God’s messiah
would suffer; “it is written that the messiah must suffer; Christ had to suffer.”
Jesus’ followers never have been able
to come to terms fully with the idea of
redemption through suffering. Surely
suffering cannot be good, cannot be
God’s desire for us! Jesus, however,
turned suffering into a positive force,
buying redemption with the single coin
that has suffering and death on one side
and resurrection on the other.
The amount of suffering in our world
is staggering. Apart from the suffering
that comes naturally with life, there is
the suffering we inflict on ourselves
through injustice, violence and war. The
suffering of Jesus continues in our day,
and we still have difficulty seeing its victims as our redeemers.
Jesus takes the side of those most
in need, physically and spiritually.
The example of Jesus poses a number of challenges to the contemporary Church ... most radically, it
calls for an emptying of self, both
individually and corporately, that
allows the Church to experience the
power of God in the midst of poverty and powerlessness.

Several parishioners have noticed that we have had more
Masses without a Deacon assisting. Recently Deacon Tom
Forster was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The
doctors are optimistic about the treatment. Tom and Bonnie
have asked for our prayers. Because of the 6 month of treatments, his schedule here at Sacred Heart will be limited. I
have assured him of our prayers as we continue to pray for
all those undergoing cancer treatment. We look forward to
his presence whenever he is able to join us.

THE VATICAN IS THE “GREENEST STATE
IN THE WORLD!”
The year before his resignation, Pope Benedict had the Vatican install a massive 100MW photovoltaic installation that
would effectively be Europe’s largest solar power plant solar
power plant. Now complete and in operation, the installation
of this array has not only made Vatican City the first solar
powered nation state in the world, but according to the
state’s official newspaper, it is now the greenest state in the
world. The newspaper Osservatore Romano reported that with

We have all heard the story before.
Two disciples walked to a small town,
called Emmaus, about seven miles from
Jerusalem. They were sorrowful—I suppose in the same way people tended to
be when Elvis died.
But this was serious. The disciples’
hero was dead, the man they had
thought was the messiah.
Then, suddenly, they were joined by a
stranger. He began explaining to them
the story of Christ as foretold in the
Jewish scriptures. When the three of
them arrived at Emmaus, they ate, and
the men knew in a flash, as he broke
the bread, just who he was. Then suddenly he disappeared. Mysterious.
These same men ran to Jerusalem as
fast as they could, to tell the eleven
apostles about this extraordinary revelation. Sunday’s Gospel tells this part of
the story. Surely they were babbling
and prattling, being so excited, but in
the midst of this excitement, suddenly,
without warning, Jesus appeared again.
“They were startled and terrified and
thought that they were seeing a ghost.”
Jesus replied that ghosts do not have
flesh and bones, do they? Touch me
and know I am real. He showed them
his hands and feet, with the wounds of
the cross now made beautiful by God’s

enough energy to power all of its 40,000 households.
The main solar array is located on a 740 acre site near Santa Maria di Galeria, but the solar panels that were installed
on Paul VI’s conference hall were put in two years ago and
are estimated to have saved the Vatican 89.84 tons in oil. It is
no wonder that the Italian media has dubbed Pope Benedict
XVI the “green pope”. Clearly His Holiness believes in reducing his city’s greenhouse gas emissions – something that
makes you wonder why other world leaders are not as concerned.
As Pope Francis completes his encyclical on the environment, Benedict could say he has his part in it, by providing
the electric for the lights that Francis worked by!

Then comes Jesus’ best move, a compassionate one. He says he is hungry.
How much more un-ghostly could you
get? He helps himself to the baked fish
they bring him, just as he had done so
often in their life together.
He begins to explain the events which
to them had seemed like pure disaster:
the passion and death and burial in particular. He recalls everything written
about him “in the law of Moses and in
the prophets and psalms,” just as he
had done for the two men on the road
to Emmaus. He tells why the Son of
Man had had to suffer, die, and be then
be raised.
What were his words?
Surely he referenced Job, who had
been a loving and moral man, but had
lost absolutely everything, which led to
a direct encounter with God (maybe a
prefiguring of the crucifixion).
And of course, the Book of Isaiah
must have been part of it:
It was our infirmities that he bore, our
sufferings that he endured, while we
thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was
pierced for our offenses, crushed for our
sins, Upon him was the chastisement
that makes us whole, by his stripes we
were healed (Isaiah 53:4-5).
This passage is the heart and soul of
the Hebrew scriptures, and, according
to our Christian and Catholic belief, the
fulfillment that was Jesus.
What about the resurrection? Here is
Isaiah again, words had been written
centuries before Jesus:
Because of his affliction he shall see
the light in fullness of days; Through
his suffering, my servant shall justify
many, and their guilt he shall bear.
Therefore I will give him his portion
among the great, and he shall divide
the spoils with the mighty (Isaiah 53:1112 italics added).
The apostles converted.
Peter went off to preach what God
“had announced beforehand through
the mouth of all the prophets, that his
Christ would suffer” (First Reading), and
that he would die and be glorified.
This is the “rest of the story” of Emmaus. And since Easter, the rest of our
own story.

PSR Registration for the 2015-2016
School Year is Online!
Sacred Heart’s Parish School of Religion is for all children
in grades 1 through 8 who attend a public or private nonCatholic school. It is very important that we put our children’s religious education as a number one priority. Sacred
Heart PSR will not refuse religious education because of any
family’s inability to pay tuition fees.
Current PSR families should have received an email from
the Religious Education Office with a link to register their
child(ren) for PSR.

Jesus and Me
Sacred Heart Parish offers a Sunday Preschool program,
“Jesus and Me” for children ages 3, 4, and 5 during the 10:15
am Mass on Sunday. Registration forms for the 2915-2016
school year are available in the Religious Education Office,
the back of Church, the Parish Office, or on the parish website.
Leaders needed for
Liturgy of the Word for Children
.
Liturgy of the Word for Children is on Sunday at the 10:15
am Mass. This is a year-round program with the exception
of certain holiday weekends. The purpose of Liturgy of the
Word for Children is to help children in Kindergarten
through grade 3 better understand the Sunday readings and
how they can put God's Word into action in their lives.
We are looking for more teams (2 adults per team) to lead
this ministry. Currently, we have 3 sets of teachers, which
means that each team teaches once every 3 weeks. We
would like to have 6-8 teams. If more teams sign up, the
scheduled times would decrease.
LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES: Leaders are provided with
printouts of the readings and activity/discussion ideas at
the beginning of the semester that corresponds with their
scheduled Sunday. Preparation time varies (depends on the
leader’s comfort level and teaching objective). Leaders arrive about 20 minutes before Mass to set up the St. Anthony
Room. Actual teaching time is approximately 15-20
minutes. After Mass, leaders check the St. Anthony Room
to put away materials.

Parishioners Don and Mary Lou Ruzicka to
celebrate 60th Anniversary April 26th
What’s happening
in April???
The family of Don and Mary Lou Ruzicka will be celebrating
the 60th Anniversary of their parents at the 12:00 noon Mass
on Sunday, April 26th. Their actual anniversary is April 23.
Friends are invited to join them in celebration.
The Ruzickas were raised in the parish. They have four children and have been blessed with 12 grandchildren and 9 great
-grandchildren. Eighty three year old Don was baptized, received his first communion, confession, and attended grade
school at Sacred Heart. He married Mary Lou at Immaculate
Conception near Brentwood and returned after several years
to Valley Park. The siblings went to the Sacred Heart grade
school. Three of them were married at Sacred Heart. Don still
mows the Sacred Heart Cemetery every year during the summer months. The cemetery holds loved ones such as his
grandparents from Europe/Czech and his parents.
Congratulations Quilt Winners
The Sacred Heart Quilters created these two lovely designs
that were offered at the quilt raffle at the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. The winners were Jim and Karen Rothery andBobby Anderhub. Thanks for the donations and we sincerely
thank the SH Quilters for their kindness and generosity.

Who are American Heritage Girls? AHG is a scout program that builds young women (age 5-18) of integrity
through service to God, family, community and country.
The all-girl unit provides a nurturing environment ripe for
learning and building positive relationships. The AHG program grows as a girl grows and is Christ-centered and allows girls to learn leadership skills and faith values. There
are many troops in the St. Louis area already in place with
a great troop support system, allowing girls to earn badges,
camp (both overnight and day camping) and perform service in their communities.

o earlier this week, I was writing this column on St. Marcellinus, and
had spent a few hours researching and writing when I suddenly discovered that the Marcellinus mentioned in the Eucharistic Prayer is actually a different Marcellinus, who had a companion named Peter. Who
knew that “Marcellinus” was such a popular name, right?
As it is, St. Marcellinus was a priest, and St. Peter was an exorcist. Now
before you all start thinking about the horror movie, let me explain. The
order of “exorcist” was one of the “minor orders” of the Church. It didn’t
serve as a ministerial order like the priest, deacon, or bishop, but an exorcist mostly had responsibilities connected to the catechumens (Christians
in training). A close equivalent today might be the combination of a baptismal sponsor, a catechist for the RCIA, and a drill sergeant. The exorcists
would lay hands on catechumens, pray for them, and make sure they were
up to the challenges of the Christian life. In some cases, yes, the exorcists
would assist clergy in formal rites of exorcism. This order actually became
part of priestly formation, and men were instituted as exorcists on their
way to priesthood all the way up the Second Vatican Council!
Anyway, back to Marcellinus and Peter. Not much is known of them other
than their martyrdom, which was recounted by Pope Damasus I. However,
he himself gave testimony on behalf of the martyrs’ executioner and their
jailer (a man named Artemius), both of whom were converted by St. Marcellinus. The companions were martyred in the year 304 during the Great
Persecution of Diocletian – incidentally, the same year as the martyrdom
of their pope – the other Marcellinus. Confused yet?
Damasus’ testimony goes that the martyrs were led out of the city by the
magistrate to a place along the Via Labicana southeast of Rome – out of
the way, so as to hide the bodies from the Christian community. Even in
the 4th century, it was well known that Christians would gather at the martyrs’ tombs to celebrate Mass on the anniversary of their death – hence our
modern practice of saints’ feast days! Even as they were stripped naked,
Marcellinus and Peter joyfully carried out their orders to clear the site of
their martyrdom from a huge thicket of thorn bushes. When finished, they
were beheaded and buried on the spot.
The Romans’ strategy to hide the graves didn’t work too well, as the
Christian community soon located them and built a church near the site in
the 4th century. Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano was restored several
times, but still stands today, and contains the relics of Sts. Marcellinus and
Peter.
Incidentally, the ancient catacombs which were built around the graves
of the martyrs were only fully excavated in 2006. They were found to be
filled with colorful frescos depicting scenes from Scripture. The archaeologists also found the remains of thousands of bodies of early Christians, still
wearing the togas they were buried in. Some were the bodies of saints and
other Christians of the early Church, but most of the bodies were likely the
victims of an ancient epidemic of typhus or smallpox. Interesting stuff!

White House Retreat
Sheriffs Pack Patrol Cars With Little Orange Boxes of
Sunshine
HENNEPIN COUNTY, MN - In Minnesota, Hennepin County sheriff’s
deputies are patrolling downtown Minneapolis carrying boxes
filled with granola bars and other nutritious goodies to hand
out to anyone in need on the streets.
The deputies’ cars are being filled by the nonprofit group,
Matter, which wants to get healthy food to people who aren’t
going to food banks. The faith-based charity launched in 2000
partnered with food giant, Cargill, during March Madness week
to raise $46,000 for the 2nd annual “Food
Madness” day, where volunteers packed
23,000 meal boxes.

orange cartons that Sheriff Rich Stanek
says will help officers to immediately help
people they come into contact with.
