Our school Athletics carnival was held last week at Town Park in Croydon. There were some outstanding
performances by our students.
Thank you to all the students and staff who made it such a great day and to the parents who came along and
supported their children. I would in particular like to thank Carla Bourne and Paul Durrant who organised the
day.
Congratulations again to all the students who participated and we wish all those going on to district level
competition all the very best.

Year 7 2017 Open Night
Our Open Night for prospective Year 7 students for 2017 was held on Monday 2 May 2016. Thank you to all the
prospective parents and guardians who came along on the evening to hear about the school and the curriculum
and programs we have to offer. We had a large number of families attend and received a lot of very positive
comments.
Parents and guardians wanting to have a tour of the school should contact the Junior Campus on 9725 8277 to
organise a suitable time.

Melba Rebuild
We have now received written confirmation that $17.9 million funding for Stage 1 Melba College rebuild has been allocated in the 2016/17 year
state budget. Plans are expected to go to tender in the next few weeks and site works should commence in August /September this year. We
would expect the new buildings to be ready for the 2018 school year.

Student Voice Update
Student Voice have had a number of meetings over the past few weeks. The group has been finalising the Casual Dress Days, fundraising
activities and potential projects. The first Casual Dress Day was held on May 5 at the Junior Campus and the second will be held on Friday May 13
at the Senior Campus. The money raised will be donated to Altitude Shift and Emerge Australia. Altitude Shift is a program to help raise funds
for Anglicare and their support of foster children. Emerge Australia is an organisation that is raising awareness of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also
known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). It is a severe, complex, acquired illness and symptoms can include issues with brain function, the
gut, the immune, endocrine and cardiac systems.
1 Million Stars to End Violence - Update
Our star making has been progressing well and had a great boost from the Athletics Carnival and Open Night. We have now made over 300
stars so far and we will continue to keep making them until towards the end of Term 3. If you would like to make a star please come to the
Junior Library on Tuesday at Lunchtime and Senior Library Thursday at Lunchtime.

Round 3 is a secret topic and will be held on Monday, May 16 2016 at 7pm.

Awards
The ICL Awards are intended not only to recognize student achievement in a wide variety of areas, but also to build and strengthen our
relationships with the local community. The awards are divided into three categories:
Individual: a student who demonstrates positive behaviour and good habits that facilitates the development of their character strengths as a
person.
Citizen: a student who acknowledges and acts on their responsibilities as a member of our community through active involvement in programs
that improve our school, local or global community.
Learner: a student who demonstrates dedication to their learning that results in growth in knowledge and understanding of their studies beyond
that expected of a student at their level.
What makes these awards different and an exciting prospect for the College is the opportunity for nominations for these awards. We are highly
interested in learning more about our students and the activities they undertake outside of their school time, and as such, are looking for
nominations for these awards from students and members of the local community.
Further details about the ICL Awards including nomination forms, are available on the College website. At the moment, these awards are open to
students at Senior Levels.

Junior School Report

Open Night
What a fantastic turn out of students on the night. It was outstanding to be a part of an evening where really the students were the shining light.
From the speeches of our captains, the enthusiastic tour guides, the wonderful cooks in the kitchen – no one was left unsure that Melba College
is a very special school to be a part of.
Athletics
Another brilliant whole school day – participation in the track events weren’t as high as usual, but the field events were chock-a-block
full. Congratulations to our Junior Age Champions: Kaila Swindell, Dominik Ferencz, Arena My, Joseph McDowell, Isabel Feller, Declan Knee and
Dim Dim Zahlang.
Healesville Year 9’s
A wonderful opportunity was created by the dedicated science staff to create
a real world experience for the students studying ecosystems. The excursion
was not only a great opportunity for students to get involved in Science, but
also to get to know each other in a different setting. Thank you all for
supporting such initiatives and the feedback has been very positive from the
students.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing will take place for all Year 7 and 9 students from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 May. Students will take part in the scheduled tests
prior to lunch time but will need to be prepared for normal timetabled classes during other lessons on those days. Test catch up sessions for
those students who are absent will be held on Friday May 13.
As always, a students’ participation in NAPLAN testing is by parent choice. Parents or guardians may choose to make their children exempt from
testing, however, there is a process which must be followed in order to obtain an exemption. If you are considering having your child withdrawn
please contact myself, to organise a consent form. An alternative program will be run for those students not completing the NAPLAN.

Year 7 Report

Launch Pad Update
This week, students began the first of their iPad Block rotations. Students over the coming
3 weeks will continue to work on skills and apps required across a number of subjects.
These include using Pages (editing document settings, formatting text and inserting and
editing images, shapes and charts); using Popplet, a mindmapping tool in which students
can input text, images and freehand notes, and filming video.
Students will also investigate using the Virtual Space of the Library in one of their
workshops with Mrs Lobato, and look at how to not just simply use Google for locating
information found online.
Open Night Participation
It was pleasing to see so many of our Year 7 cohort participating in our College Open Night on Monday. The College Open Night plays a key part
in advertising our school to prospective parents and the wider community, and our students who took part were exceptional ambassadors of our
college. Working in our Year 7 Room, our Student Voice Leaders demonstrated what they head learnt in Launch Pad, chatted about Orientation
and Camp, discussed Student Voice, answered parent questions and assisted in our Passport Activity. A big thank you for your support as part of
this night.
German Showcase Evening
On Tuesday May 24 at 6:00pm our students will take part in a German Showcase Evening. In German classes, students have been busy
researching famous German speakers, and on the night we will roll out the red carpet for our Einsteins, Federers, Klums and Franks. The night
forms a key part of the German Curriculum and CAT 2 as part of their studies and participation is required. Should you have any queries for the
night, please feel free to contact either Kathy Halpin or myself regarding extra information.
Homework Club
A reminder that Homework Club runs on Thursday afternoons in the college library. Please contact Mrs Hannah Apostolou or myself for more

Year 8 Report
Mr Neil Robinson – Year 8 Leader
Term 2 continues to be a very busy yet exciting time for Year 8 students at Melba College. Students should now be working diligently through
their CAT tasks; students are asked to ensure they keep up to date with their work, to ensure the quality of their work is maximized and work is
submitted punctually. Catch-up sessions for overdue CAT tasks occur every Wednesday afternoon in the school library. Students will be notified
via Compass if they are required to attend an after-school catch-up session. Parents/Guardians will also be notified by an email and a letter. For
your child’s future educational success, it is very important that they endeavor to submit all work punctually wherever possible.

Year 8 students will be involved in the district sports on Wednesday 18 May. Students will participate in the following sports:

Year 9 Report
Mrs Kasey Browne & Mr Chris Hunter – Year 9 Leaders
One of the privileges we have as teachers is to see the development of students throughout the years as we teach them. To see a student enter
school at Year 7 and leave school as young adults always brings with it a sense of accomplishment. Even at the Year 9 level the changes and
accomplishments of our students in three years is great to see. We are proud of the students who have shown the efforts within the classroom,
the sporting arena and in service and leadership around the school. Congratulations to all those at Year 9 level students who participated in the
school Athletics day and contributed to their House teams. A number of students have also represented the school in a variety of team sports
and we have been impressed with the way these students represent Melba College.
With Term 2 well under way students will now be receiving their assessmen tasks across the subjects. They will need to ensure that these are
completed on time. We encourage parents to check with their child to ensure that they are organizing their time to complete these to the best
of their ability. Research has shown that organization of work is as important as academic capability. The more organized they can be the better
the outcomes. It also prevents the panic at ‘due date’ times and prevents the anxiety that can occur around this.
Senior School Report
Mrs Alison Steele – Senior School Leader
The weeks are flying by at this time of year as assessments and exam preparations loom closer. For this reason, the Athletic sports day was a
welcome distraction last week and an opportunity to burn off some nervous tension. Once again, it was a lovely opportunity for the school to
come together as a whole and celebrate with our respective houses. There were many outstanding costumes and breathtaking athletic
performances. Congratulations to Blue Gum on their win and the respective age champions for their efforts.
Just as the weather changed, the Year 12 students finally received their commemorative jerseys and they look fantastic! Thank you to Mr Allan
for his efforts in organising and distributing the jerseys. There was certainly much excitement that day!
Exams
End of Semester 1 exams will be conducted for Years 10 and 11 only. The exam timetable will run from June 3-9. More detailed information and
the exam timetable will be distributed in Year level assemblies closer to the date.
The VCAA General Achievement Test (GAT) will take place on the 7 June for all students completing a VCE Unit 3/4 subject including Year 11
students doing an enhancement subject. This exam is compulsory and anyone who cannot attend must seek formal exemption through the
Senior School Leader Mrs Steele.
Year 10 Report
Mr Michael Benjamin – Year 10 Leader
Congratulations are extended to Luke Perry who has been selected for the Crikey Crusaders cricket side touring Sri Lanka during the June-July
holidays. This is a significant achievement on Luke’s behalf. The Melba College community wishes Luke every success in Sri Lanka.
Maroondah Young Leaders Program- This week four of our Year 10 students have spent the week at EV’s Youth Centre participating in this
program. Friday’s Presentation Night will formally acknowledge and recognise the work our students have been doing. The students involved are
Claudia Foulis, Jacob Millington, James Heriot and Annie Doe. The students have developed a range of skills whilst interacting and collaborating
with students from other schools in the local area. Our students will later apply these abilities to Community Action Projects in the local area.
Year 10 German Excursion- On Monday May 9 Mrs Andersen, Ms Halpin and I will accompany 20 Year 10 German students to the city. During
this excursion the students will identify and critically review tourist destinations for German tourists. This activity is tied to the Year 10 German
curriculum for Year 10, specifically the ‘Urlaub and Tourismus’ topic. Eventually this information will form the basis of an assessment item. Lunch
will then be enjoyed at the Hofbrauhaus Melbourne before we return to Croydon by train.
Year 10 Work Experience- Work Experience week (Monday 20 June to Friday 24 June) is approaching rapidly. Any student without a Work
Experience placement must urgently obtain one and, in turn, lodge completed Work Experience form with Miss Arambasic. Work Experience is
an important part of the My Career, My Future subject and Year 10 as a whole.
Other Information- As winter approaches and the temperature drops, students are reminded of the need to wear complete and correct uniform,
to attend all lessons punctually, to keep up to date with classwork and assessments and to be properly prepared for their forthcoming exams.
Year 11 Report
Mr Andy Lockey – Year 11 Leader
Week 4 of Term 2 is here and we are slowly sneaking up to the end of Unit 1 studies, the final SACs are approaching and students will find that all
of a sudden they will have 2 or 3 or more SACs a week. It is important that students check with staff when SACs are going to be due. This will
enable study to be spread out in the lead up to the assessment task rather than having to cram nonstop when preparing for the SAC. This is also
a good practice to put in place prior to the end of Unit 1 exams that will take place starting on June 2 and run to 9 June. After these exams Unit 2
studies will commence.
Now is also a good time for students to consider any changes to their studies, if they want to select a different subject for study in Unit 2. The
chance to change is obviously dependent on a variety of factors, including availability and how the changes will affect other subjects being
studied. If any students are considering changes they are advised to contact either Mrs Steele or myself.
Finally, there is not long left to Semester One and 1 would like to congratulate the students of Year 11 on the great attitudes that are being
displayed towards studies and towards each other. More of the same can only produce positive outcomes.

Year 12 Report
Mr Richard Allan – Year 12 Leader
With the cold weather setting in I would just like to remind students and families that Year 12 students should be wearing the correct school
uniform to, from and during school hours as per the college’s uniform policy. The Year 12 rugby jumpers arrived this week, and can be worn in
place of the regular college jumper or as an extra layer to keep students warm.
All Year 12 students have been spoken to about their responsibility for being in full school uniform and following the correct procedure when a
uniform pass is required. It is vital our Year 12 students are setting a good example for younger students and look their best when they are both
in and out of school.

Important Dates
A range of important dates are rapidly approaching for Year 12 students. They include:
GAT: All Students completing a Unit 3-4 Sequence are required by VCAA to sit the General Achievement Test on Tuesday 7 June from 10:00am1:15pm in the senior school gym. Further information will be provided to students and parents about the importance of GAT in coming weeks.
The Year 12 Valedictory Dinner: Will be held at the San Remo Ballroom, Carlton North on Friday 21 October. As always, this promises to be a
fantastic night to celebrate the completion of our Year 12 students’ secondary education. The cost of the dinner will be $80.00 per head and
bookings will open online during Term 3. More details will be provided closer to the event. If you have any questions, please contact either Pam

Melba’s Edible Forest Garden
MELBA COLLEGE EDIBLE FOREST GARDEN
The Edible Forest Garden at Junior Campus is flourishing with fruit trees, herbs and perennials growing rapidly and providing produce for the
Food Technology classes. The announcement regarding the new school build is exciting for the development of our food garden as its relocation
to the new site has been part of our plan and will be successfully achieved in the future. In the meantime we can enjoy the produce from the
Junior campus garden.

Where does our food come from?
Year 11 VCAL Personal Development students made parsley and calendula egg-shell seed cases for Grade 6 students to take home and plant. The
egg-shell cases can be cracked and placed directly into soil to continue growing.
The fabulous efforts of Year 7, 8 and 9 students led by Mrs Alban, resulted in a delicious supper being prepared and served on Open Night.
Library News
Library and Resource Centre Junior Campus
It has been a busy, busy, term in the Junior Campus Library with, Year 7 Launchpad, topical displays, preparing for Open Night, processing
fabulous new books to add to our collection plus classes booked in for research or quiet reading and other activities. Excellent!
LaunchPad is in full swing with Year 7 students learning about our WorldBook Online database. This is a rich online reference resource that
includes encyclopaedia articles, primary source material, educator tools, student activities and media plus links to related web sites. There are
subject related additional databases and access to both fiction and nonfiction eBooks. Students and staff can access this resource both at school
and off campus using the Melba Log-In. It is important to show students the benefits of using authoritative age appropriate resources such as
World Book online rather than heading directly to a Google search.
Displays
Earth Day: is a display focussing on an awareness of and appreciation for the earth’s environment. At a school level we focussed on a specific
area in the grounds and sought suggestions from students who used that area as to what needed to be put in place to make it rubbish free. An
extra rubbish bin and student awareness has made a positive change – well done!
Civil War – created by students to coincide with the film release of Captain America : Civil War. The students learned such a lot about design and
display and the presentation was a credit to them. Well done Ruby, Alyssa, Ryan, Josh and Zac.
Open Night – Teacher, Marg Henley organised a medieval style tent (getelt) which was erected outside the library for Open Night. It was a huge
success and I am sure many campers were envious as to how homely the getelt looked. Amazing what a couple of rugs can do - just take a look at
the photos! Supporting this Medieval theme the library presented a display of games that had origins in Medieval times or where a version of
the game was played. Hopscotch – Skittles- Hookey – Pick up sticks and Chess were some of the games scattered around the library for people to
experience. We have decided to leave them out as students are eager to have a go, the favourites being Hopscotch, Pick Up Sticks and Chess.
Book Spine Poetry Free form poetry is an activity where students place the title from the book spine in such a way that a free form or book spine
poem is created and they don’t have to write a thing! However it is not as easy as it sounds. Below are examples of some of the interesting and
creative poems that our visitors put together on the night.
The Olympic Games Quiz was a hit and participants went away with a greater knowledge of the history of the Olympic Games, as well as a
Certificate of Achievement – nearly everyone received 100%! (You could edit your incorrect answers as many times as you needed!)
The library has recently acquired an Interactive Large Format Touchscreen (electronic whiteboard) thanks to Terry Bennett and the generosity of
Ricoh. It has already been put to good use with classes using it the morning after it was installed. The students were enthusiastic and eager to
use this new technology.

Performing Arts
MELBA COLLEGE MARCHING BAND – ANZAC DAY PARADE 2016
On Monday April 25 our Band travelled into the City to participate in the 2016 ANZAC Day Parade. The weather was the best in a decade and the
crowds reflected it.
We stepped off for the first time at 9:10am – the first school band in the Parade. At the completion of our march we stood at the Shrine
Forecourt and played to the gathered crowd for a further 10 minutes. We were then raced onto a bus to be taken back to Federation Square to
step off for a second time at 10:45am. Once again, we played to the growing crowd at The Shrine Forecourt for about 5 minutes before jumping
on a bus to head back to Federation Square to march for a third time. Our third and final leg began at
11:55am and we finished at the Forecourt at 12:45pm.
It is an honor to be involved in such an auspicious occasion. Everyone in our Band students played and
marched well. Congratulations on a job well done

Melba College’s Athletics carnival was held recently at Town Park in Croydon, a change of venue due to the Ringwood Athletics track currently
undergoing renovation. The weather made for a very comfortable day and it was extremely pleasing to see the number of students who dressed
up in their house colors. This was highlighted with the students walking behind their house banner down the 100m. straight before the events
started. As was the case with the swimming carnival, Bluegum emerged as the victorious team.

The College wishes to congratulate James Dall of Year 12 and Luke Perry of Year 10 on their recent selections to Representative Teams in their
chosen sports.
James plays Gridiron for Croydon Rangers Juniors (under 19) and the Senior open men’s. He has been selected to the All Vic Team 2016. He has
been invited to join the squad for the Gridiron Victoria Under 19 state team as a wide receiver.
Luke is off to Sri Lanka to play cricket with the Crikey Crusaders. Good luck boys!
James in action!
World Challenge 2016
On Sunday, May 1, myself and 6 other challengers set off from Jack Russell Park in Gembrook with our Training Leader, Tony, on a 12km hike to
our camp site through tough yet magnificent forest and parkland. We encouraged each other when we struggled and gelled together as a team.
As we walked, Tony taught us vital skills that we will need to use when we go to Malaysia and Borneo in November - Tony's Top Tips, we called
them. These included how to use an emergency shelter, lost person scenarios,
scaling steep and slippery ground with the help of ropes, crossing rivers, negotiating
with the locals and risk assessing hotels, transport vehicles and urban
environments.
Together as a team, we were also responsible for buying and cooking our own food;
enough for two days - lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch again and snacks for the
travel. As you can imagine, what we bought at Aldi on day 1, had to be carried in
our packs along with our personal gear and clothes, plus group gear, such as Doug,
the shovel for urgent mid-hike toilet stops.
Waking up on Monday morning after a night in a tent and a terrible night’s sleep,
did not dull our spirits or stop us from making jokes and enjoying our porridge breakfast
prepared by yours truly. We then hiked in the direction of home with the thought of a shower
and our own beds in the back of our minds. Thankfully, Tony lead us via a shortcut.
The things we learnt and the experience we had last weekend has, in my opinion, prepared us
and got us in the right frame of mind for our trip later on this year. We are excited to meet the
rest of our team from Queensland, and begin this adventure together.

Law Week 2016
Law Week is an annual festival of events that makes learning about the law easy. Held in May each year, Law Week has taken place across since
1980. This year Law Week will take place from Monday 16 May – Sunday 22 May 2016. Students get to go behind the scenes of the Victorian
legal system, and check out what the law is all about. Find legal answers on everyday issues, take a prison ghost tour, enjoy some comedy or live
music, or check out courts open day for debates, mock-trials and more.

Design Futures Careers Expo
The Design Futures Forum and Careers Expo introduces students to a line-up of internationally acclaimed designers, across multiple disciplines,
recognised for their unique ideas and exemplary execution of their craft. Design Futures presents an opportunity for teachers of
design, and students interested in the creative industries, to gain an insight into the role of design in multiple sectors. Attendees will get to walk
through the expo, meet speakers, etc.

Second Hand Uniforms
Below is a list of second hand uniforms for sale. These items can be purchase at the Junior Campus General office
It is important that all second hand uniforms items offered for sales are in excellent condition. Items should be checked for wear and tear and
must be laundered. Items should be priced at between half and two-thirds of the retail price. Melba College retains 25% of the sale price as a fee
for the service. If uniforms have not sold after 9 months the college will reduce the price of the item by $10.00 - $15.00. You can reclaim your
items if you do not want the price reduced.
