Wintering/Delivery
Bulls will be at the Auction Market on Thursday, March 19, preceding Sale
Day or view them at GCCR before Sale Day..
GCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30. Delivery
will be scheduled after the sale to start as soon as possible. Please let the
sale clerks know the day of the Sale if you are taking the bulls or if you
want us to deliver. Please take heifers home sale day or arrange to pick
them up from us as soon as possible. Bulls and heifers not taken sale day
are brought back to ranch shortly after the sale so that we are taking
care of them.
Terms
Final Data:
Cash. Animals sold to highest bidder. Announcements at sale block
take precedence.
Actual weights will be taken shortly before the sale and a breeding
soundness exam and fertility test will be done by Dr. Troy Worth.
Genetic testing, color testing and ultrasound results will be posted on
DV Auction and our website around March 1 or as soon as received.

a bid. We have those every year and have always had satisfied customers.

Volume Discount:
Buy 3 or more bulls and receive a 5% discount on each. Heifers are
excluded from discounts

registered cattle.
Semen Interest:
GCCR will retain a 1/3 revenue sharing interest in semen from the Sale
Bulls. Buyers will have full possession.
Guarantee:
In accordance with the Simmental Association, Bulls are guaranteed for
the first breeding season–a replacement bull or credit on next year’s sale
minus salvage value. See Jim Gies for mortality insurance. Call us as soon
as possible if you have a problem or concerns.

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purpose of EPD calculation. In
order to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so this summer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base.
The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the new
average. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD.The base number will just be different for each trait. It will
actually make it easier to compare animals across breeds.

*Note the EPDs in the catalog are Simmental and NOT Angus. Compare GCCR cattle EPDs to the Simmental breed average not the Angus which
are different.
Kappes black diamond 343 Z654
Luke Keller directed us toward this bull in the 2013 Sale season. A power bull, Black Diamond is a SimAngusTM who has a very popular PB Simmental sire KS Black
Diamond from the Kenner Ranch and his dam is an OCC genetics Angus donor cow for Kappes. Kappes Black Diamond is stout and excels in depth of rib and
muscle. A top growth bull for Kappes his first calves are a little later but have grown with the early calves. His picture shows his capacity and depth of flank.

DISPOSITION
Quiet cattle with good disposition are a No. 1 requirement around here. We cull strictly and eliminate any
animal at any stage if they are nervous or difficult to handle. Calves are socialized from an early age and
handled in a quiet and easy manner. And don’t let anybody tell you that a cow has to be aggressive to be a
good mother. Most of our cows are gentle but will also be very protective of a newborn. Now studies have
come out citing increased pregnancy rates with docile cattle. We have been seeing the studies showing that
quiet calm cattle gain better and more efficiently in the feedlots. Thus there is an economic payoff to docility
along with the pleasure and increased safety of working with easy cattle.

With feed costs high, in today’s cattle feeding environment , you need an animal that will perform efficiently and hang a carcass
that will generate premiums above “average” cattle. We have been feeding Gengenbach Cattle Co calves for the last six years
and they have proven that they can do both. The gains are well above the yard average and the conversions are as well. We
have been marketing these cattle through the US Premium Beef grid in the spring and early summer. This grid works well for cattle
that grade choice and dress above the plant average as do the Gengenbach cattle. The disposition of the cattle is excellent which
makes everyones’ job easier. It has been a pleasure feeding Randy and Mary Jo’s cattle.

HEALTH STATEMENT
It is our desire that bulls and females purchased from GENGENBACH CATTLE will have a long and productive life. With that
goal in mind we have implemented the following protocol:
All sale animals are ear notch tested for BVD and to this date no positive animals have been detected. All breeding females
receive a pre breeding vaccination with a modified live BVD vaccine to help prevent BVD persistently infected calves. At
preg check cows are given killed vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR, Vibrio and Lepto. Calves receive vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR,
Pasteurella and Clostridium in the spring and at pre weaning and weaning. Cattle are dewormed in the fall with Dectomax
injectable and treated for lice and grubs at that time also. Sale bulls and heifers will be poured with Dectomax prior to sale.

to ASA EPDs and $ INDEXES
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs
are the most accurate and effective tool
available for comparing genetic levels. In
using EPDs, the difference between two
sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny.
For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of
+10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to
+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is
knowing what units they are expressed in.
For example, if the above case referred to
weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected
to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than
B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be
expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted
births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if
B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers,
we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative
to other bulls in the breed. For percentile

EPDs and $ indexes visit
www.simmental.org. Listed below are the
units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed
under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See
below for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births
when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of
weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of
force required to shear a steak.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed
under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below
for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison
of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come
in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs
and economics to estimate an animal’s overall
impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine,
poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following
$ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use
on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus
first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the
portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining
heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade
and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed
and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to
use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if
not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on
the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per
cow exposed.) The difference can be used to
determine how much a bull is worth compared
to another. Or, put another way, how much
you can pay for one bull compared to another.
For example, when buying an all-purpose-type
sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100
for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50
bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years
($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine
where a bull’s index value ranks him relative
to other bulls in the breed. For percentile
