I’m very excited about the availability of my
Father-in-law, Dr. Chuck Killian to deliver the
Father’s Day message on Sunday, June 21,
2015 at both 8:30 and 11:00.
Words of Introduction from Chuck Killian:
I began preaching, they tell me, when I was five years old. My first sermon was to my uncle’s cows. I was told
that my sermon was basically this: “You cows better start giving more milk, or you all will go to hell.” She said
the milk production increased following that brief sermon. But it does give you some idea of the kind of
preaching I was had been exposed to in those early years.
My church life has been affiliated with Pilgrim Holiness Church, the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and in
1969, I joined the United Methodist Church and was ordained an Elder in the South Indiana Conference. In
1970, I received my PhD in Speech and Theatre from Indiana University. And for the past 43 years, I have
been teaching, preaching, storytelling, drama at Asbury Theological Seminary.
I have pastored churches in New York, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. For the past ten years,
following retirement from full-time teaching, I have pastored churches in the Western North Carolina
Conference and have served as an Associate Pastor at Apex and Garner. [Most recently I have been] interim
pastor at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Raleigh. All during these since retirement I have been a
teaching adjunct at Asbury Seminary.
Chuck is married to Jane, and together they have two daughters, Joy and Elaine, two son-in-laws and
four grandchildren. Chuck has also been on multiple mission trips, preaching and teaching in eastern Europe,
Russia and the Baltics where he taught at the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary in Tallin, Estonia. I can’t
think of anyone I’d rather have come and speak at Saint Luke on Father’s Day than “Paps” – he really is one of
the best speakers and best men I have ever known.
Love to all,
Pastor Billy

OUTREACH
The ASP Team is really excited as time is quickly approaching for our upcoming trip. Twenty-one
youth and adults will be leaving for Johnson City, Tennessee on Sunday,
June 21, and return on Friday night, June 26. We ask that you be in prayer for our team before and during our trip. Not
everyone is able to participate in a mission trip but everyone can support
us with your prayers. Thank you for your support. May God bless you all in
a mighty way.

Chairman of Outreach

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
The Susan Lockey Seekers Circle meets the first Wednesday of every month at 10am in the
Fellowship hall and the Mary Harvin Discovery Circle meets also on the first Wednesday at 6:15pm, with the
exception of the summer months.
Our June meeting will be a salad supper on Wednesday, June 10, at 6:00pm. All Ladies of the Church are
invited to attend. Each person brings a salad to share with the group. I hope you will consider joining us for
this delightful evening of fun, food, and fellowship.
The Saint Luke UMW is holding its annual yard sale on Saturday, June
6th in the Fellowship hall from 7:30am until 12 Noon. We can use your
help in three ways: one by donating items to sell, secondly by helping to
organize and price items a few days before the yard sale, and last by
volunteering at the yard sale. We have lots of fun getting ready for the
yard sale as well as the day of the yard sale. You can always find something you need - remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Hope to see you there.
SAINTS AND SENIORS
I know you are waiting with baited breath wondering
when and where we’re going this busy month of May.
The fact is, may I say, May has slipped away and soon
June will be here to stay. I had planned for us to go to
Bishopville to view Pearl Fryar’s topiary gardens but I
believe it will have to wait until Tuesday, June 23. Let
me know how you feel about this.
However, a small group of blessed Saint “Lukeians”
visited the UNC-P Indian Museum at Old Main April 23.
Dr. Stan Knick, Curator of the Museum, gave us an informative history of the location and the artifacts and
explained the pieces done by a local artist that were on exhibit.
We ate in the cafeteria which was quite an experience since hundreds of
school children were there eating after seeing a production of “Rapunzel” at
the Givens Arts Center next door.
All in all it was a great adventure and, of course, our undaunting Bo got us
there and back safely.
Prayers and Candles,
Carol Whitehead

Come enjoy a fun family evening with friends to
celebrate the end of the school year!
Junior Fellowship will break for
summer and resume in September!
Renew Your Spirit
As the school year comes to a close, hopefully many of those
extracurricular activities that our kids are involved in are
coming to a close as well. I’m sure if any of you feel like I do
during a typical week, each day brings a new schedule and a
new taxi service route. As we approach summer, hopefully
many of us are looking forward to that time to escape and get
away on a vacation - a time to unwind, relax and find some
peace. Jesus demonstrates for us the need to withdraw from
time to time to rest. Both He and his disciples worked hard at
ministering to people. Jesus certainly didn't turn anyone away
in a time of need, but he took opportunities to escape to care
for both his physical and spiritual needs. Many of us take on
more than we should and sometimes we drive ourselves to
physical exhaustion. When this happens, not only does our
physical health suffer, but we also become spiritually drained
as well and we neglect one of the most important aspects:
intimate time with our Father. My hope is that you find some
time to draw aside and rest. Ask the Spirit to be present with
you and allow your mind, body, and spirit to be refreshed. I
hope you have a wonderful beginning to summer!
Grace and Peace,
Maggie

Psalm 139: 7 - 10
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
Even there your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast.
The Middle School Youth spent 3 days at Ocean Isle Beach to spend time with God and with each other. We asked the question – Who is God to US?? We will share our answers on June 7th, Youth Sunday,

counselors, to other camps, and on family vacations,
