Autumn 2015 - Alinta Energy
advantages by Alinta Energy IN THIS ISSUE Warming up your cold showers this winter + Win a family pass to Disney Pixar’s INSIDE OUT autumn 2015 Is there anything worse than a cold shower in the middle of winter? When a hot water system goes it tends to go suddenly. At that point most people don’t have the luxury of carefully reviewing the available options. Instead, you typically get a replacement of the same type wheeled in ASAP – and try to forget about it until next time. But what if you were missing out on a better product? A natural gas hot water system offers some great benefits for your home. For the average Australian home, hot water accounts for around a quarter of your household’s energy costs and household’s greenhouse gas emissions*. It’s easy to see why having the right hot water system in place can make a big difference but how do you choose the right one for your home? Continuous flow vs Storage tank? Do you go for a system with a tank, or one that heats water instantly? There are two main types of natural gas hot water systems continuous flow systems and storage systems. Natural Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems Continuous flow or instantaneous Natural Gas hot water systems heat water as you use it, rather than storing it. These small units fit into tight spaces, which is ideal if you are short of space around your home or live in an apartment. When a hot water tap is turned on it triggers the continuous flow unit to start heating. Water flows through pipes inside the unit which are heated by Natural Gas combustion. This means you can get as much hot water as you need without worrying about it running out. This is a great option for families with young children as you can set the hot water temperature low enough to prevent accidental burns in the bathroom. At the same time you can set your hot water temperature high enough in the kitchen to properly clean and sanitise when washing dishes. An easier way to pay your bill It’s around this time of year that expenses start to pile up – so you might feel inspired to get your finances in order. We can take the hassle out of paying your Alinta Energy bill with direct debit payments. Natural Gas Storage Hot Water Systems Natural Gas storage systems heat water slowly and store it at the right temperature in an insulated tank. Because the water does not have to be heated as it goes through your tap, storage systems supply hot water at mains pressure. If you need larger quantities of hot water, for example to fill a bathtub, a storage system is an excellent choice. Natural Gas storage systems take up more space than continuous flow systems, however they are normally at the side of the house, out of the way. To decide which system is best, you need to consider your lifestyle, the purchase price, installation costs and the long-term running costs. Consider: •the number of people (and bathrooms) in your household and the number of showers, baths and loads of washing to take into account; •whether your hot water needs are likely to change over the next decade (e.g. young children may soon be teenagers using more hot water); • the space available for your hot water system to be installed; •your budget for the total cost including installation and any additional plumbing or electrical work that may be required. It’s also important to consider ongoing running costs (efficiency of the appliance) and the impact on your household budget; and •when choosing your new hot water system, look for the star rating system. The more stars, the more efficient the appliance – reducing operating costs an greenhouse gas emissions. Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. A group of Alinta Energy employee volunteers also undertook an extensive garden makeover at Ronald McDonald House Bunbury Retreat. The garden transformation included the installation of a new children’s cubby house and fort, new paving and outdoor furniture, a new lawn and over 300 plants. Food Rescue Food sorting at the Food Rescue warehouse in Belmont. Staff volunteered their time to sort the food that had been collected, in readiness for it to be redistributed to charities around Perth. Tell us something you love about Perth and why? I’m originally from a very cold city, in darkest northern England so I’d have to say the weather! I think I can get used to 30+ days for weeks on end. I find it quite funny when people over here say “it gets cold in the winter” and they then say “it’s gets down to about 15 degrees”….. so a fairly typical English summer then….
