School sores are a skin infection, caused by the Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria and are highly contagious. A child with school sores should be kept home from school until appropriate treatment has begun and the sores on exposed areas are covered with a waterproof dressing and where necessary, a crepe bandage. If you suspect your child has school sores, please contact your doctor so treatment can commence. Chess Competition Recently, 13 primary students travelled to Toowoomba for the annual individual Chess competition. With five girls and eight boys attending, it demonstrates that Chess is a game for everyone and a game that continues to grow in popularity. Just ask the 300 children who attended the competition what they think about Chess! In the competition one point is awarded for a win, half a point for a tie and no points for a loss. Overall, the combined Allora students earnt 50.5 points from a possible 101 points available to them on the day. This is a great result, which means that on average the students won every second game. There were some standout performers on the day, with Lachlan Robson taking 5.5 points from a possible eight, Macey Heslin taking 5.5 from a possible seven and Nicola Westerman taking five points from a possible eight. Paul Costello (4), Jack Barbierato (4.5) and Chloe Groves (4.5) also competed very well throughout the day. Every student gained at least two points for the day, demonstrating that Chess is alive and the young students here at Allora are well adept in the sport. To those who drove the students to Toowoomba on the day, the students and I thank you for making the Chess trip possible! For all those who have the Chess bug biting, do not worry. Coming up in Term Two is the primary teams’ competition in Toowoomba; and if that isn’t enough, everyone is welcome to the Science Lab every Wednesday to join in the Chess Club. See you all there! It is extremely important for you to check your child’s head for head lice TODAY. Keep checking every 2 days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days. If you do find head lice, commence effective treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading. You can effectively treat head lice without using chemicals. The conditioner and combing technique is recommended by Queensland Health. The process described in the Queensland Health fact sheet is as follows: You will need white coloured hair conditioner, an ordinary comb, a fine tooth head lice comb and white tissue/kitchen towel. Apply sufficient white conditioner to dry hair to completely cover the scalp and hair from roots to tips; Use an ordinary comb to detangle hair and evenly distribute the conditioner. Divide the hair into four sections. Comb hair from root to tips using a fine tooth head lice comb. After each stroke, wipe the comb onto a white tissue, checking the comb and tissue for head lice. Comb the whole head, checking for lice. Put all tissues in a plastic bag, tie the top and put the bag in a rubbish bin. Repeat the conditioner and combing method every second day to remove the young nymphs as they hatch. Continue until no live lice are found for ten consecutive days. If for any reason you are having difficulties treating the head lice on your child effectively, please contact your pharmacy for assistance.
