Students have a long list of duties which can sometimes become
a source of stress: homework, chores, part-time jobs, music lessons, teams, babysitting, parish and community responsibilities.
School staff attend to an ever-growing list of tasks. Parents
struggle daily to balance work and family commitments. It is essential in this modern world that we try to do our best while understanding there are limited hours in each day. We need to give
each other permission to enjoy each other and God’s blessings
and bounty, rather than always worrying about completing our
“to do” list. Thank-you for raising such wonderful, responsible
children, and sharing them with us each day. And good luck with
those New Year’s Resolutions.
Welcome to 2016. We hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas holiday. We extend our sincerest wishes for a very
Happy New Year.

date is Friday Jan 22. We will be going in the morning
arriving for 9:30 and heading back to the school at
11:30.
Please have your child dressed for outdoor play. We also suggested that your
child bring a change of clothes to be
kept at school for those slips into puddles and mud.
If any parents want to meet us
there and help with skating or
tying of laces please make sure
you have an updated police
check. Thanks for your support!
Our Lost & Found table is quite full of items.
Please check the Lost & Found table on a
regular basis. At the end of each month any
unclaimed items will be donated
Library News and Events
For
January 2016
“HAPPINESS IS … finding the first book in a series and knowing there are more to follow.”
Welcome to a New Year!. The library has always been a place of wonder and curiosities. A time to enjoy
the pleasure of choosing a book of personal interests. It has been proven that reading-aloud with your children helps them build confidence. It encourages imagination and the joy of listening to a good story.
I’m pleased to inform everyone that we have received 15 I-pads and 8 netbooks for the students to use.
Technology is in our world to stay so if embrace it we can learn in a different way, play games, and visually
enjoy the world around us.
Scholastic Book fair is COMING next month! I’ve scheduled the famous book fair for Tuesday, February
16th to Friday, February 19th. Our FAMILY NIGHT will be on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 from 3:30- 6:30 p.m.
A chance for everyone to attend!!
All of the children at this school seem engaged in looking or reading books. Each and every week the students are borrowing more than one book to enjoy at home.
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to
explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. Libraries change lives for the better” -Sidney Sheldon
Happy Reading!

Mental Health Moment
Did you know that super stimulants in our kids’ environments are hidden
stressors that can drain a child’s energy? Super stimulants are things like
candy and sugary foods, videogames, and action movies designed to deliver
repeated adrenaline bursts. Overexposure to these super stimulants can
leave a child feeling restless, bored, and in a low energy, high tension state.
So what can we do to help? Encouraging your child to get outside and play is one of the best remedies.
Physical activity, connecting with nature, reading, and even arts and crafts can help to replenish a child’s
energy and help them to feel calm and alert!

DON’T LET Head Lice BUG YOU!
Like thousands of other Canadian families, it’s quite possible that yours, too, will be bugged by pediculosis also known head lice at
some time. Head lice are no reflection on the state of cleanliness; they are a recurring problem which can affect anyone in direct
contact. Head lice do not carry disease. They are a nuisance but not a health hazard. They do
no result from a lack of cleanliness. Anyone can get head lice regardless of their hair length.
Head lice are tiny, flat insects with no wings. They are 1-2mm long, greyish brown in colour
and hard to see. It is important to treat and remove head lice to prevent transmission. Treatment products will kill the lice but not all the nits(eggs). The nits are small white oval shaped
deposits that are stuck to the shaft of the hair. These may hatch and your child will be reinvested.
If you find head lice on your child please contact the school. It is school board policy that ALL
nits and live lice be removed from the hair before a child returns to school.
It is suggested that you check your child’s hair regularly. Should you have any questions regarding head lice and/or treatment please contact the school for further information.
BUS ROUTES AND INCLEMENT WEATHER
The winter season is once again fast approaching. Prior to the beginning of the school day, inclement weather or poor road conditions
may force the cancellation of school transportation services. In this
event, bus delays and cancellations will be posted on the ww.stsco.ca
website. Area radio stations and media outlets will broadcast related
information.
Remember that if a bus is cancelled in the morning, it will
not run in the afternoon.
As a parent/guardian, it is recommended that you:

Know your child’s school bus route number and know the name of the bus company operating the route

Listen to your local radio station or visit the www.stsco.ca website in the morning for delays or cancellations

Ensure that your child is at the school bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time of the bus
The STSCO telephone information line 748-9240 or toll free 1-866-433-4441 can also be used to check
if there are any large scale bus cancellations.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Our Breakfast Program needs your help! On a typical day 50-70 students visit our Breakfast Program. Our program
is available from 8:40 am to 8:55 am and always includes items from at least 3 food groups as well as juice or milk.
Bowls containing healthy snacks are also delivered to each classroom every morning. We need volunteers to help us
keep our program successful.
Can you bake the occasional batch of muffins, oatmeal cookies or banana bread? Or even mini-pancakes or waffles?
All ingredients will be supplies. The Breakfast Program has a freezer located in the school and can store baking any
time you can send it in. You are also welcome to use our kitchen facilities to bake.
We are always grateful for donations too for the program - we are always in need of cheese and fresh
fruit/vegetables.
We really need volunteers (police check is required) to help supervise the Breakfast Program in the morning between
8:15 am and 9:00 am. This is a great way for Grandparents to get involved. Please consider helping out - the commitment time is only once every two weeks - you can make a real difference!
If you can assist in any way please contact Lisa Davies at [email protected]
