Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who contributed their time to make the fall festival and Fall Book Fair a huge success. Our Festival was spearheaded by the super parent Maria Parker Markison! Thank you Maria for your many hours of dedication towards this incredible community event. Thank you to the Dads’ Club and Voces Unidas for your yummy food contributions. Our Book fair exceeded its goal once again- grossing over $9,000 in sales! Thank you Jill Stowe and Joie Toscano for organizing the fair and helping us get books in the hands of so many students. Halloween Costume Guidelines & Parade Info You are invited to join us for the annual Halloween Parade on Friday, October 30th at 1pm. Please do NOT wear costumes to school. Students will have time to change during lunch. We will meet in front of the FO buildings and walk around the neighborhood. Most classes will host parties in their rooms following the parade. We encourage you to bring healthy snacks to share. This is not an early dismissal day. COSTUMES: Students or Adults are not allowed to bring weapons of any kind to school. Also, no extremely scary (bloody/gory/inappropriate) costumes allowed. We have very young children at school who may be frightened. No masks on children or adults please. Thank you for helping us make this a safe and fun event for everyone. Want to join the School Site Council (SSC)? We are currently seeking parents to join the School Site Council. We meet every other month on Mondays at 4:15pm (about 4 meetings per school year). If you are interested, please inquire at the office. Dr. Soraya Sablo Sutton Principal, Roosevelt Elementary Page 2 Hornet Newsletter Special Thanks to… this week’s worker’s Nikky Cheng and Mac Blair who worked hard and answered phones. We couldn’t have done it without you! NOON SUPERVISORS We’re in desperate need of Noon Supervisors! It’s so important that we have adults on our yard during lunch (11:40 – 12:45). If you would like to earn a few dollars and come watch our kids during lunch, please let us know in the front office. LICE OUTBREAK Parents/Guardian: If your student gets lice or any other contagious condition, PLEASE contact the front office. All reports will remain confidential. The old stereo types that your child is unclean are not true. In actuality Lice grab hold of clean hair folicals much more easier than dirty/oily hair. In hiding the fact your student has lice adds to the schools outbreak. If your student has an itchy scalp and you are unsure if he/she has been exposed to lice you can bring your student to the front office for a check. If your student gets lice please make sure your student is treated before they return to school. For non-pesticide hair remedy please see the attached flyer. Thank you, Office Staff PREVENTATIVE FOR LICE As some of you know (letters went home) a few of our grade levels have been infected with lice. When there is an outbreak please follow the guidelines listed on the letter before your child returns to school. It is sometimes very difficult to get the outbreak under control but if everyone takes precautions and is diligent in checking your child for lice we can get rid of our out break quickly. Unfortunately no ethnicity is exempt from the lice as once believed. Everyone can get it! It knows no boundaries. It does not matter if the hair is clean or dirty. They actually prefer clean hair. Children with long hair should braid their hair and/or put their hair up. One of our parents has given us a pesticide free hair remedy that works! We want to share with you: The recipe… 1 Tbs. Olive Oil 1 tsp. Rosemary Oil 1 tsp. Eucalyptus Oil 1 tsp. Penny Royal Oil Saturate hair, put on a shower cap overnight and shampoo You can find these oils at the health food store. (Castro Village/Pelton Ctr.) If you are unsure of what lice looks like and would like your child checked for lice please let us know. We also have 2 professional places you can take your child if infected. One is Nit Pixies in Oakland and they can be reached at 530-HAIR (4247) or www.nitpixies.com and Lice Control in Berkeley, 727-1280. Tea tree Oil Shampoo and Coconut shampoo are also good to continue as a preventative. IF YOUR CHILD HAS LICE PLEASE, PLEASE NOTIFY THE OFFICE. THIS CALL WILL BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL! Thank you to all who participated in the Book Fair! We exceeded our sales goal making an incredible $9,558! With this fundraiser we were able to raise $1000 for our PTA, while continuing to provide books & educational materials to our classrooms, with an additional $2344 in Scholastic profits! Please donate reams of copy paper to your classroom teacher. Roosevelt families, we need your help! In an attempt to continually access the latest, common core aligned curricular resources, teachers are printing many materials from online websites. This has resulted in an increased need for copy paper. To help meet this need, we will are hosting a PAPER DRIVE in the month of October. Please help out by having your child bring reams of copy paper to the office or to their child’s teacher. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
